Should Sanford go?
Foxnews just reported that Gov. Sanford has spent more time with the Argentine woman than previously stated. That he spent multiple days with her in New York.
The man does not seem to be focusing on the job. And if he cannot be trusted with his vows to his wife & family, why should he be trusted by our citizens?
Personally, I wish he would resign. I don't particularly wish to see Andre Bauer in office, but Sanford is just unbearable at this point. And if he resigns, it will save the legislature from impeaching him.
Any thoughts? Should he stay? Should he go?
If what you said is true, then I agree 100% with you. He has hurt the SC republican party and possibly the local party. It seems to have a trickle down effect.
Governor Sanford's personal behavior seems to contradict everything he campaigned and worked for. Family values is only part of it.
I don't know Andre very well, but he can't be worse than what we have. Right?
I am offended that apparently your only concern is how the Republican Party is affected by all this.
Do you even realize that The State of SC and The Republican Party are two totally different creatures..and that the issue of his Governorship has nothing to do with the political fortunes of The Party?
As with some others in this town, apparently your only concern is that The Republican Party always come out on top. Does it even matter any more about the actual nuances of governing, and making decisions and acting in a fashion that affect the daily lives of over 4,000,000 people, most of whom are NOT members of the Republican Party??
This is not about politics..or at least it shouldnt be.
Palmetto-Native, I understand the concern of Republican party members, and of those of all South Carolinians. I think Political Hack is just stating the obvious. Democrats want the man out, of course, for clear political reasons. But Republicans are now clamoring for "their" party's man to go.
The governor has shown poor judgment. And now even more in the news:

Resignation or impeachment. He needs to be removed one way or another.
Fussbudget,
That was basically what i was thinking. It is obvious that Sanford's antics have hurt the state and it's citizens. But, unlike democrats, a lot of republicans are calling for his ouster. He has hurt other good candidates in our party and he should resign. We don't need him to be impeached. It would be worse on his family and the state if that happened.
I agree, impeachment would be a nightmare. But the man did not wish to resign. Of course, after the news that just came out this morning, he may reconsider.
He is obviously a liar. And not worthy of the office of head of our state. He is untrustworthy, and has humiliated our citizens.
David Letterman's 10 ten zingers. Multiple news items on all the networks. Comedy central. Good heavens, how long will we have to continue with this?
Sanford needs to resign.
But if he won't -- I hope the legislature moves rapidly to get this over. Illinois got rid of Gov. Blog... and it was done very quickly. I feel sure our legislators can do the same.
And I am NOT a democrat. I am saying this as a Republican. But I am also stating it as a life long citizen of South Carolina.
Is the Legislature still in session, Fussbudget, or have they adjourned for the year (or, at least, until fall.) If they've adjourned, can they call themselves back for a special session, or does the Governor have to do that?
If it's the Governor's responsibility to call them back into session to deal with this, would he actually do that?
And what is the process in South Carolina for impeaching a Governor?
Questions, questions, questions. Inquiring minds want to know.
You know, the odd thing about all of this is that the ones who are most adamant that Sanford not resign are those Democrats who thought they wouldn't have to run against an incumbent Governor next time. If Sanford goes, young Andre steps in in his place.
On top of that, Sanford and Bauer don't get along that well, either. Remember, the Governor's (soon-to-be ex-) wife endorsed his opponent in the Republican Primary for Lieutenant Governor a couple of years ago. Talk about an uncomfortable situation there.
I'm sorry but I would stick with Sanford with Bauer as the alternative.
Bauer- What hasn't he done? Some had to be very forgiving for him to be re-elected. ( I just find him to not be too smart.)
Many people didn't like Sanford's stand on the stimulus package. It seems like strange timing that the whole affair thing would come out now. This wasn't his first trip to Argentina and the e-mails didn't suddenly appear. (But I also tend to not like anyone's personal life being used to affect their job.)
I'd rather have Sanford than Bauer for the next 18 months, too, but FoxNews just reported that the Governor said he has "crossed the line, but did not have sex" with other women (Whoa! Shades of Bill Clinton!) and that his Argentine lover is his "soulmate."
Enough already. Governor Horndog needs to convince us South Carolinians that he can keep little Mark under control, at least until he's out of office. (After that, it's between him, his wife, and whatever woman he's "crossing the line" with.)
If he can't do that, he needs to resign. Now.
Much to my regret, I don't know that he has enough credibility left after this to weather the next eighteen months. I'd look for a resignation letter within the next 30 days after he clears the romance from his head and the Argentine perfume from his nostrils and takes an honest look at what he's done to his political future.
I continue to defend and support his past efforts to rein in state spending and his principled stand against the $700 million in stimulus funds for which we sacrificed some state autonomy.
But whatever clout he had earlier as Governor of South Carolina (which, thanks to ol' Ben Tillman's S.C. Constitution of 1895, wasn't much) he has lost. His strongest support - those who don't want him to resign - right now is from Democrats who don't want to face an incumbent Gov. Bauer next election. The Democrats who call themselves Republicans and make up the majority of the General Assembly are mortified by his actions, but they'll mostly continue to use weasel words because of political expedience.
Sanford is just waiting to get popped out of the toaster. It won't be long now.
Actually JD . . .
Two things:

Bauer's Bold Move

(brilliant move - VERY brilliant)
2.) Trivia:
A good friend of mine has reminded me on a number of previous occasions that our Lt. Governor has never held an office for a full term, with the only exception being his current assignment as the Lt. Gov.
Based on the information in that article at FITS, I'm going to make a safe bet and say that the Governor's Office is just a pit-stop en route to something larger.

I heard Bauer say on FoxNews a couple of days ago that if he was the only thing standing between Sanford and resignation, he'd withdraw from the 2010 race. I thought it was an intriguing statement.
Young Andre may not know how to keep his car below takeoff speed or how to get his plane above takeoff speed, but he is more politically savvy than his opponents give him credit for being. Who knows? Maybe even Lindsey Graham is paying attention to him now.
It gets better . . .

PS: So where can I get my "My Governor is a Bigger MAN-WHORE than Your Governor" bumper-stickers?
"This was a whole lot more than a simple affair, this was a love story," Sanford said. "A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of the day."
During an emotional interview at his Statehouse office with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sanford said Chapur is his soul mate but he's trying to fall back in love with his wife.

!!!!!!
He's gone off the deep end!
I give him 60 days, and by then, he's applying for Argentinian citizenship.....
Doesn't Governor Mark just make you want to barf?
I love a good romance and we have such good writers in the south for that kind of thing. I smell a movie!
I'm amazed that the majority of you know all, give all, done it all, haven't questioned why Sanford did what he did ? I'm sure the family home life was perfect. Just remember there's two sides and we've only heard from one. Mrs Sanford will be playing her cards, using all her claws, calling in her markers.
Mark, you may as well withdraw all the money you can. Catch the first plane out of this country. When the X & her attornies get thru chewing on your @#$ there will be nothing left
I've walked in those shoes, been thru the Family Court System, told the truth and got hammered.
One thing for sure, you will know who your friends are and will find out about these so called christians in SC who can cast those stones.
Remember, there's the caught and the un-caught !!
I'm amazed that the majority of you know all, give all, done it all, haven't questioned why Sanford did what he did ?

"No matter how smart she is ... no matter how good looking she is ... somewhere, someone is tired of putting up with her s---." ![]()
Never thought I'd get to bring that saying back from ye olde college bin 'o sayings! LOL

Ok, SS, guess that saying can go both ways, but since you are a smarty I'll be honest and say I'm sure you won't be aware of it.
I don't care how bad a situation you have at home might be; it is still never an excuse to be unfaithful. People who are unhappy in their marriages should divorce first then go screw around with anyone that suits them.
