Here is a poll in thestate.com:

Should Gov. Mark Sanford resign as South Carolina's governor?

It appears that the 2010 election campaign has put a twist into this situation. Democrats probably would love to keep Sanford in office.  Republican opponents of Andre Bauer don't want the Lt. Gov. to be promoted to Gov., and get a trial run in the Governor's chair.  Some would like to see Mark Sanford remain in office as a wounded lame duck.

On the other hand, having Mark Sanford remain in office would probably do for South Carolina, what Gov. Rod Blagojevich did for the state of Illinois until his ouster: shine a dim light on the state.

The fact that the Gov admitted that he saw his friend on a prior official trip and that he will now repay the money is indication enough that he misused his office. He should resign.

He needs to pull a Kobe and buy his wife a $4 million diamond ring...

Nah, he needs one of those $400 ankle cuffs with the built-in GPS tracker and a $200 shock collar with a remote control his wife can use when she needs to. No reason to spend $4 million to solve this problem.

Pink slip would be Sanford’s fate in private sector
http://www.thestate.com/803/story/843245.html

Take the Gov. Mark Sanford story out of politics and put it in the business world.

A Fortune 500 CEO lies about his whereabouts and then disappears without telling his executive vice president, board of directors or secretary where he is going. He turns off his phones. He’s gone for six days. When he comes home, it’s discovered he was overseas visiting a mistress.

What would happen?

Well, it wouldn't be an election. There's the problem. Only the voters can fire him if he refuses to resign. And without recall, they have no means to remove him except inmpeachment, which would seem an unlikely prospect under the circumstances.

I don't want him to resign. If he could run for a third term I would vote for him again.

His personal problems are between him, his family, and his God. He has been a good Governor.

Yeah, this support from the same guy who wanted to fry Preston over ALLEDGED sexual encounters.  While Sanford carried on a confirmed sexual relationship, with tax dollars funding the trips and motels, and lies to SLED, his advisors, his constituents and of course his WIFE.

His personal problems are the STATE'S problems.

Aha! Another tedious post by wyatt, mixing fact with falsehood and trying to pass it off as reality.

Wyatt please cite any post of mine where I "wanted to fry Preston over ALLEDGED sexual encounters".  I think you have been caught once again in a lie.

This has nothing to do with the topic, but we haven't had a new post in hours, and I'm excited.  I just got kicked by the baby for the first time!!!

I agree Wyatt.  Sanford's personal problems have affected the way he does his job.  If he were a soldier who had gone AWOL , what would happen to him.  I really appreciated what Glen McCall, National Executive Committeeman said in his statement.  Who is to say that Sanford won't have another meltdown and run off to the Pampas again.  What would happen then?  In any other job situation, he would have been fired for not showing up for work and then only having the excuse that he had to visit his girlfriend.  While I have seldom agreed with Sanford on the issues, I had always liked and respected him as a man.  Now he's lost my respect.

I don't know how much this fiasco has affected the way Sanford does his job - thanks to ol' Ben Tillman, the Governor of South Carolina has no real power anyway - but it's certainly messed up any planned trips I may have wanted to take without Mrs. Tippett over the next century or so. sad
Virginia, Merrymac, you mothers are very lucky. We fathers usually don't experience the joy of getting kicked by our offspring until college tuition comes due.

NS, bet you didn't say the same thing about President Clinton.  Clinton never abandoned his post as the leader of this country and managed to leave the Presidency and the Country in better financial shape than any Republican President.

I do agree that personal problems that don't effect a persons ability to lead should not be considered as impeachable acts.

We frequently hear how Clinton left the Country in good shape, but fail to hear that the Country had a Republican Congress for the last 6 years of his Presidency.

I believe it is disasterous to have one party in total control.  ( GWB and Obama;  Neither should be given free rein)!

Ms. Petunia1 you are so right! When it comes to Clinton I could not say "If he could run for a third term I would vote for him again." Because I never voted for him the two other times he ran!
