County Employee Holidays

Mr.McAbee initiated an ordinance to give county employees Good Friday off in addition to the current 13 paid holidays (14 during a voting tear). First of all what other employer gives 13 paid days off a year other than maybe the education system? Let me know if there are any. Consider this too, there are about 900 county employees, lets say they average $10.00 per hour in wages, then 900 x 10 = $9000 dollars per hour times 8 hours per day is $72,000 dollars per day times 13 holidays equals $936,000 dollars per year employees are paid for not working. If we use the 14 days (every other year) this totals $1,008,000 dollars in salaries paid for not working. If Good Friday is approved of course this will be 15 paid days (or three work weeks off!) at a total of $1,080,000 of pay for not working. Is this really running a lean mean budget concept during these tough economic times?!

Perhaps KK you can add up how many days off you get in a year.

I think it's fine if they want to make Good Friday a holiday, but I'm worried about what else the Fab 5 might try to push through at that Dec. 30 meeting. I wonder where the secret meeting is going to be beforehand so they can script out the meeting.

Probably higher than that since you didn't include matching taxes an employer must pay. You also forgot to include other bennies: Sick Days, Insurance, etc.

I wonder about the "Confederate Memorial Day" holiday. Not that I am for or against it, I just always seem to not know what day that is and end up going to the (closed) dump that day. ;-)

The average American company has 9 - 10 paid holidays per year. Only in government can you get an additional 4 to 6 days off.

I thought this was pretty pathetic. I am not against Good Friday, but maybe it should be a floating holiday with one of the others. You can't tell me the other 14 are that important. Seems to me that the county gets more time off than the bankers.

I think you are pretty far off on your analysis. It is much higher than that. If you account for the benefits and other costs associated with having an employee I think you will find the cost would far exceed $10.00 per hour.

I read where Mr. McAbee (i think) said that salaried employees would not cost the county anything because they have a fixed salary regardless if they work or not. (i paraphrased). That is hogwash. If you are not working it has to be done later, therefore reducing the efficiency's of your labor.

I don't know if Mr. McAbee is a business owner or not, but I doubt he would think that way if it was his company's money.

First off, they need to do away with confederate memorial day. This is one of the dumbest holidays I've ever heard of. (Don't call me a yankee, I have lived in the south all my life and had relatives fight on the side of the south)Besides we already have a Memorial Day. Next they need to do away with Presidents day and election day as holidays. Two more dumb ones. Good Friday is good because Easter always falls on a Sunday and this gives the employees that day. It also covers any Jewish employees to have Passover off.
So, add Good Friday and remove c.m.d., Presidents Day and election day. This would be more in-line with the real world.

Cunningham said in the Dec. 2, 2008 meeting that personnel costs each day were 146,000.00. Tat works out to better than 2 million for 14 days of paid vacation for county employees. Page 53 of the 12/02 meeting minutes.

Ellie I get 2 paid days off per year. I spoke to a number of people in various occupations and none of them get close to 13 paid days off per year. Yes, to some of the others I was being conservative with the numbers I used. They would actually be somewhat higher if true salaries were available for all employees. Anderson County is not a bad job to have. These numbers may be something to consider when we ask why our infrastructure (roads in particular) aren't getting repaired.

Blogger---Wow, great job to have unless you are including paid vacation days which is another story because the county employees get those too. Also is your salary paid directly by the tax payer as are those of county employees?

All our days are lumped together. And no dispite comments here to the contrary I receive nothing from the county, although my children have occasionally been given stickers. My apologies all of you who's tax dollars went to those, if someone tells me where to send it I'll be happy to refund the 92 cents they must have cost.

AndersonResident, I gave a thumbs UP to that  one.  Only in the SOUTH does someone get such a day for celebrating.....what?  Not a presidents Day, Election,Birth of Christ or national get drunk day (St. Paddy's day).  Noon a note, Americans do No get enough time off.  European nations work less than we do, and their people are more socially adjusted and less stressed than AMericans. Just because they are "civil servants" should not deny them time with their families, a day at the lake fishing, or time to relax and watch a game. Using vacation days when you don't feel like it is forced time off IMHO. School is out, why not mom & dad?

Looking for compromise? Initiate a modified 4/10 workweek. Nobody will call in on Fridays.........

Blogger, send the 92 cents to Cindy Wilson!  Am sure she'll say you #@&% the county out of it.

No no no it is 92 cents worth of stickers over the course of attending several years of community events not one lump sum.
