Check it out, folks! There will be a Holiday Market at the Anderson County Farmer's Market from 2-10pm on Saturday Dec. 13th (that's this Saturday).

ANDERSON, SC--On Saturday, December 13th, the Anderson County Farmer’s Market will host the ‘first ever’ Holiday Market. The Market will take place from 2 to 10 pm on Saturday, December 13th 2008 at the Anderson County Farmer’s Market. The event and parking are free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Styled after a Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlmarkt, the German tradition of a nighttime family event goes back to the middle ages. During our Holiday Market, visitors will enjoy traditional winter treats, such as spiced cider, hot chocolate, and the traditional German Glühwein (a warm spiced wine).  One of our vendors, the CocoBon Chocolatier will serve Bratwurst and hamburgers in addition to his regular scrumptious chocolate treats. Holiday-goers can also enjoy an old-fashioned marshmellow roasting over an open fire.

Between 2:30 and 5 pm, bring the children or grandchildren for a visit with Old Saint Nick as he takes a break from his busy schedule preparing for his Christmas Eve duties. Enjoy live music from 5:30 to 9 pm as you shop for that ‘perfect present’ during our local craft sale. And there is no better way to get into the spirit of the season than a trolley ride through the festive, holiday lights in historic downtown Anderson from 6 to 9 pm.

To keep people warm, the Farmer’s Market will have heaters in operation all night.
The Holiday Market is a great German tradition, coming to Anderson for the first time! It promises to be a fun event for the whole family. Mark your calendar now! Plan to spend the day at the Anderson County Farmer’s Market on Saturday December 13th and start your own family tradition.

The Anderson County Farmer's Market is located at the corner of Tribble Street and Murray Avenue in beautiful, historic downtown Anderson. For more information about the Holiday Market or the Farmer’s Market, call 864.934.2737

It took me three years to finally get to the Greek Festival.  Seems I am always in Germany when something new and exciting  happens  at the Farmer's Market.  Take it from me the Christmas Markets here are really fun.  I am trying to take in as many as possible.  Don't miss this chance to enjoy this fine tradition in Anderson. Be sure and try the Gluhwein. Keep taking sips it will taste better with each swallow.  If nothing else it keeps your hands warm. Laughing  Support this fine effort!

Greenville puts on a great festival!

While we're on the subject of holdiay events, does anyone know a neighborhood which has gone extreme with holiday lighting?   When we were younger, it was such a treat to drive through the neighborhoods and enjoy all the decorations, lights and caroling.  Besides Lights of Hope, is there a neighborhood in Anderson which you feel has gone Extreme Makeover with lights and holiday decorations?  Post it here please.

OK guys! What is the deal? The Christkindlmarkt was advertised for 2 until 10 with Gluhwein and bratwurst (among other things) like a real German Christmas Market.

Some of my fondest memories are of many Christmas seasons in Germany. I was able to enjoy the Christkindlmarkts in many different towns and cities and sample some great bratwurst and brotchen and washing it down with delicious hot gluhwein. My favorite bratwurst were from Stuttgart and my favorite gluhwein was the Nurenburg variation. Overall year in and year out I enjoyed the Nurenburg Christkindlmarkt best of all. I still celebrate the Nurenburg visits yet today as my Christmas tree is topped with a Nurenburg Angel and many ornaments are from that markt. I did not expect this first attempt at a Christkindlemarkt to match the real thing . But based on the advance billing I was looking foreward to a good time.

I got there at 7PM and it was such a bummer! Ther was no Gluhwein. There was no bratwurst. With the exception of the food stands the wares for sale could have been purchased year-round at the Berry House. It seemed some of the vendors had already departed. I sincerely hope it was better earlier in the day. But at 7PM it was a waste of time!

I was there about 3 and people were eating brats I didn't see the spiced wine but I figured it was a little early for that.

I got there about four and there was a vendor selling food.  I also understand there was a problem with the liquor license.   The number of vendors was small but please remember it is the first time the Farmer's Market has tried this.  I hope it will become a tradition.  I thought it was a really neat idea.  Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves while I was there.

I guess you all think I am crazy. But I tell you when I got there at 7pm or a little later there was no gluhwein or bratwurst. So either I wandered around in a fog and missed it or the brats were gone. Did anyone get any gluhwein? I don't want to discourage the event from returning. I want it to be a great event. Perhaps I expected too much.

Something I forgot to mention in my earlier post might be an idea to promote continued attendance. In Germany the Gluhwein is served in little ceramic cups. The cups are usually made with a design of the Christkindlmarkt location and the year. When you get your Gluhwein you pay a deposit on your cup and get it back when you return it. However, a lot of folks forfiet their deposit and keep the cup as a momento of that place and year. Not that I did a lot of drinking (lol), but I am proud of my collection from all over the former West Germany and Austria. Perhaps if the Gluwein vendors could have some type of distinctive (but inexpensive) cup available with a design and date it may spark a continued interest in attending year after year.

Although I was very disapointed, I hope the event returns. I just hope it improves.
