At the meeting tonight the Anderson County Council voted 5-2 to buy out the contract of Anderson County Administrator Joey Preston. Is the saga over or are we merely entering the winter of our discontent? All this Ole Dixiecrat knows is that God willing and the creek don't rise we can maybe now move on with our county, our state, and our lives. How do you all think this will play out in January and the next council, what will happen to Cindy now that her boogieman is gone? Who knows?
Preston gone!!!
I see this night differently. Joey Preston is gone. Now, we have the chance to move on to conservative, pro-growth government that is not obsessed with personal issues. Now, we see what our leaders are made of. Will they dwell on the past, or will they get off their duffs and help make Anderson a pro-growth place again?
Join me in celebrating the end of the Preston era. It might have cost us more money than we care for, but so be it. We will make up that money in added revenue with new growth we make if we can put this saga behind us.
It is a great night for Anderson County. Preston is gone and we will find out if our leaders are really for conservative and pro growth government or if they are just Ahabs who keep seeking their white whale even after they killed the son of bitch.
I am absolutely disgusted wth the "gang of five". I will contribute from my own pocket to any legal action that can be taken against this horrible miscarriage of government! The next election is two years away. I helped to vote out my member of the gang of five this year. Between now and the next election I will do anything I can to help those in other district to rid themselves of the remaining gang members. This is a terrible night in Anderson County politics.-nomadron
Nomad there is no legal action that can be taken against the council. The buyout of Mr. Preston's contract was all done in a legal manner. While it is true that debate was pretty much not allowed because of the continued movements for the question these procedures are quite common. Examples are the Rules Committee of the House and the cloture movement of the Senate. Also, correct me anyone if I am wrong, I beleive that in South Carolina since the counties are political entities of the state their governments enjoy the sovereign immunity of the state in state courts. This means that they cannot be sued for actions they took in the exercise of their official duties.
You are most certainly right. I am so furious that I let my anger do my thinking. I misspoke.
But didn't these actions require three readings?

Good point nomad, I'm not sure if they do require three readings. It may not since this not technically, that being the key word here, a ordinance of the county. In any regards even thought they have the right to end debate it is still something that should not be done lightly and should only be used when it appears someone is trying to monopolize debate, Ms. Wilson and Mr. Waldrep really didn't even get that far.

Send your money to MCW. Beware, it is a poor investment. MCW has been on the losing end of at least 12 (she still facing an ethics investigation) lawsuits.
Also, she's had her "friends" pay some of her legal bills, so I guess it's been fun for her.
This is a GREAT night in Anderson County politics. Justice has prevailed. A contract has been honored. A good (not perfect) man has been paid his due. That might trouble you, but it tickles the heck out of me.
Here's to the heros of the County Council, Larry Greer, Bill McAbee, Gracie Floyd, Ron Wilson and Michael Thompson. They know how to honor a contract.
He, he, I'm soooo happy tonight.

Let's face it, MCW has momopolized the agenda for several years. She'll moan about how unfair this is to the taxpayers and point the finger at the other council members. But, careful observers will come to recognize that SHE caused all this and of late Bob Waldrep joined in. So we've lost in two ways; a good administrator and the contractual payout money. Look'n for people to blame, cast your eyes to the left side of the council chambers, there you'll find the Bob-C twins.
repub, are you receiving a commision on this transaction?

Now after this financial commitment for the severance package, how can the county afford the forensic audit they have already voted to do? Or was that included in the earlier budget?
Queen,
with Joey gone, do you really think they feel the need to do one?
This entire situation is eerily similar to Nathaniel Hawthorne's "the Scarlet Letter"....after the father of Hester Prynne's child is revealed, Roger Chillingworth dies a slow, vengeful death...so will this audit.
If I were Michael Cunningham I would all but insist there be an audit. Who would want to take over a business where one don't know who the checks are written to.
Start with a clean slate and keep it clean.
This post is not to insinuate there is any mis deeds in the present admin. But there is always a skeleton of some size in the closet!
in response to Republikin:
Did you go to the meeting? Well, I did and I can say that this is a damn disgrace to the PEOPLE of Andrson County. I said it before and I say it again, the LETTER OF RESIGNATION sent wks ago was the setting up the plan to release JP so he would get a big PAY-OFF. Well he got what he wanted and not what he should have gotten which was nothing . Republikin, you are so full of it that you can't see what is happening here or either you just don't give a damn about Anderson County or maybe you are in Joey's pocket alone with the rest of the gang. WHICH IS IT?????????????
Taxi dude, Republikan is far, far from being my favorite person. But, even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Let's celebrate the fact Preston is gone. Now, we can see the conservative, pro-growth agenda of Wilson and her followers come to fruition. It will more than make up for any money paid to make Preston go away, right?
We won! Be happy!
Or, is there no conservative pro-growth agenda from the new council? Are the pissed at the deal or because they have no boogie man to attack?
REAL REPUBLICANS AND REAL CONSERVATIVES DEMAND LEADERSHIP NOW FROM COUNCIL, NOT WHINING AND LIBERAL LIKE BITCHING AND MOANING AND THREATS OF LEGAL ACTION.
Folks, remember the shameful Gang of Five are STILL in office and I think they will do even more damage to the taxpayers on their way out. There will be lawsuits against Joey, McAbee, R. Wilson, Floyd, Thompson and Greer after the first of the year. When we find out how they and others benefited personally with deals set up by Preston there will be more lawsuits. This is not over. I believe that Michael Thompson was really sick over what was going on and I ask: What does Preston hold over Thompson and the other 4 to make them betray their county and voters, including those that supported them? Preston will leave but the Gang of Shame will still be here to face the music from us. What have they done? Thompson should have turned the meeting over to the co-chairman but it was previously decided by Preston and his attorney on how to close the meeting out to prevent further discussion. What a disgrace Preston, McAbee, Thompson, Floyd, Greer and R. Wilson are to our Anderson County.
Several ways to look at this. Let me quote myself:

"You know . . .
For a bunch of folks that got EXACTLY what they wanted last night, you'd never know it for all the crying and whining here in these posts. The existing council actually did the incoming council a favor - a favor and point probably lost on the bulk of you based on your current replies.
The outgoing council removed last night what promised to be the central focus of the incoming council. Yes folks, the outgoing council forced the incoming council to deal with THE COUNTY and not JRP.
Nice to know they, the new council, will actually have to get to work instead of mounting the modern-day equivalent of the Spanish Inquisition.
As it has been said before ... be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
Checkmate. Preston wins.
... stupid ..."
The reason you hear the whining from so many people is this: Certain elements in this county wanted an opportunity to "operate the guillotine" against JRP, so to speak. If you are keeping score at home folks, this is not the first time the existing council has taken the thunder from the incoming council. Remember the issue of the audit? Yes folks, it was the existing council that opted to address the issue. Think about that . . .
Finally ... let me repeat again ... be careful what you wish for, as you got it. Things are about to get a LOT more interesting.
... stupids ... everywhere ...

It took six people to come up with your "checkmate". What else can these six people do to us before four of them leave and the rape of Anderson stops. It was not as if anyone was surprised by the actions taken last night so let's hope the new Council had a plan to stop it.

Rape of Anderson? Are you serious?
It's called honoring a contract. If you don't like honoring a legal document, then fight it out in the courts in what would promise to be a long and protracted fight. A fight that would most likely cost Anderson FAR more than any settlement/severance agreement. I'm truly sorry that it bothers you to know that someone was SMART in negotiating his terms of employment. Terms of employment that brought about an iron-clad contract for employment and significant financial windfall in the event of termination.
It's all about business, plain and simple.
Now, as for this so-called financial burden, and worries about how we will pay for this, here is my suggestion: The county has a reserve fund - tap it. Now for the incoming council members that think the reserve fund can be used to fund certain things - think again. That fund, coupled with our debt ratio, is what is keeping our good bond rating afloat. Liquidate that fund ... and your bond rating crumbles.
The new council can't stop what has happend. It is done. As many here have said, it is time to MOVE ON and stop playing petty politics. Sadly, I think the game has yet to truly begin in the petty political arena.
... stupid ...
