Today, I'm very proud to be from Anderson County and Williamston.

The people of Anderson County decided that they prefer conservative reform over status quo rhetoric and returned Kevin Bryant to the state senate.

The people of Anderson County rejected the pork laiden penny sales tax and sent a message to the new county council that we want them to prioritize infrastrucutre with existing revenues instead of foolishly raising taxes.

Finally, the people of Williamston elected a new mayor to lead us into a new era of accountability and fiscal responsibility.

I'm all for prioritizing spending and open government. Sadly, once we get that worked out coupled with the savings from credit card spending that some seem so concerned about, we will have enough money to maybe pave a couple more driveway access pads.

I am pleased to see Phil Clardy out. Talk about arrogant? I wonder if Stanley worked behind the scenes to get him defeated? You know, that Williamston Journal has become quit a vocal force in local matters. It seems to me, anyway. :-)

It's official with the recount this morning. Carthel Crout is the Mayor-elect of Williamston. This is particularly amazing because it was a three-way race. No three person race in Williamston in recent memory has been decided without a run-off. It looks like Williamston will be in for better days with Mayor Crout and a solid town council behind him. Some people like me have worked for change in Williamston since 2003 when it wasn't the popular thing to do. I've faced threats, intimidation, and been laughed at several times through the years, and we have tasted defeat more than once. But we finally succeded yesterday.

Good days ahead for Williamston. Maybe you can ride the town of a certain biased reporter and really progress.

You know, sometimes giving everyone a fresh start would be a good option.  Beating the old issues is a waste of time.  You are not going to get rid of Stan Welch - he makes $$$$ for the Journal, and David Meade does have common sense as a businessman.  Give it a rest, Repub.  The new mayor has his work cut out for him.

Phil Clardy is a good man who did his best with a difficult situation.  I am glad I was not in his shoes.  Just as I am glad I am not in the shoes of President-Elect Obama in these very difficult times.

I hate to burst your bubble Lee but there are no run-offs in a general election in south Carolina.  In a multiple candidate race, the candidate with the most votes wins.  It doesn't have to be a majority just a plurality.  Now in Georgia, you would have to have a run off between the top two candidates.

I'll dare to say that you may be mistaken in this instance, Merrymac. Each municipality gets to set by ordinance how it will nominate and elect candidates. Sec. 5-15-62 of the SC Code defines the "nonpartisan election and runoff method" as one option that a municipality can choose from to govern its elections. Williamston has always included the provision for the "nonpartisan election and runoff method" in its election ordinances as far as I know. I know I have been involved in several runoffs in Williamston over the past few years. Also, Anderson must use the same method because Terrence Roberts won a run-off against Richard Shirley there a couple of years ago.

Sorry Willieh but I did not speak before I thought.  I may not have dug into election law like I should have but I am pretty sure that any race held during a general election will not go to a run-off.  The city elections in Anderson city are not held during the general elections.  And Willieh--whoever you are and I've been told but don't have proof--you don't need to damn me with your faint praise.  If you're who I've been told you are, the betrayal of our friendship is quite enough.  If I have made a mistake I will be the first to admit it.

You are definitely correct in saying that each municipality sets by ordinance how its elections are conducted.  But in your race to prove me wrong you overlooked Section 5-15-61 which provides for municipal general elections non-partisan with election by plurality.  Are you still in law school?  I stand by my first statement.  In South Carolina there are no run-offs in a general election like the one we had on Tuesday.

I don't know Queen. I'm hearing some very interesting stuff about Welch's possible future in journalism. An unconfirmed rumor is that with AIM's continuing demise, a bi-weekly or tri-weekly paper might be in the offing. If it is, rumor has it that Welch's name would be high up on the masthead. I also know for a fact that he was asked by someone at the Independent (name withheld) to consider the managing editor's job.So, maybe the Williamston Journal will be rid of him. They won't like it, but it could happen.

Give the guy a break Dune!  I even gave GWB a break.  He certainly proved my point that he wasn't up to the job. Still can't believe he won the second four years.  Guess you will have to put up with our choice for the next eight. Laughing

My guess is that BHO will be a one term Pres.  I recall it took the Dems under Clinton, two years to screw up so bad they were ousted from the Congress.  Clinton, IMHO, governed most effectively when the Repubs took control of the Congress.

It took the Repubs, under Bush,  6 years to screw up so bad they were ousted from the Congress.  Power has that effect on government officials, it seems.

I do not envy BHO, being indebted to the left wing loons, while trying to maintain a good relationship with the moderate democrats.  Can he do it?  If he can, he is a genius.  If not, he'll have problems.

Well, the region continues to evolve and time will tell what happens!  The better half has been quite disgusted with the Anderson Indep-Mail for its increasing decrease in size.  We have noticed that the Anderson Journal seems bigger than the AIM at times.  I hate to see the local paper not be a daily edition.  I have gotten rather accustomed to it after 50+ years of the Anderson newspaper each morning.

We will have to put up with your guy for FOUR years, Petunia!  We shall see about the other 4 in 2012! Wink

Dearest Ed,

There are some, accomplish nothing the last year or two, Democratic Congress persons that I would be happy to see leave. Replacement with moderate Republicans would perhaps give us a really efficient Congress. Term limits would certainly keep them from becoming so entrenched and compromised. A moderate woman added to the Supreme Court and I could feel that once again the checks and balances were in place.

Don't even get me started on the good old boy's club in Columbia. Laughing  Have a great day!
