I'm so poor I can't afford to pay attention.
Art, good to see you back, but you're still a Joey toady. You're right, he is the only employee with a contract with three years' severance. The current county attorney wrote that clause for him. And the opinion of the current council doesn't mean shit anymore. Preston's letter claiming anticipatory breach of his contract is nothing more than a letter of resignation. Does it really have to be pointed out that it is the hired help's job to adapt to the elected authority, and not the other way around? No other single issue makes it clearer just how distoted the system of government has become in Anderson County under Joey Preston,Tom MArtin, and a slew of complicit and complacent elected officials who allowed it to happen.Nomadron,
There is a great deal of truth to your statement. However, we need to consider the following points:
•The majority of the New Council have already made public statements which are less than friendly toward Mr. Joey Preston.•The Administrator is the only one on county payroll with a contract which includes three years severance pay.•The majority of the Present Council do believe that Mr. Joe Preston has performed well and honorably, and they do have the voters' mandate until December 31, 2008, to make decisions based on their best judgment.•Allowing Mr. Preston’s contract to end with one year severance pay would be a compromise decision, which would save Anderson County from potential future legal battles, at a great cost to taxpayers.

I would recommend to the incoming Council, and to the sorry outgoing one as well, the United States' war cry when the pirates of North Africa began seizing our ships two hundred years ago. "Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute."
If Joey concedes he cannot work with the properly and legally elected officials of this county, let him leave - empty handed. If he has a case, let him argue it in court at his own expense for a change, instead of using public funds to pay his attorneys. Let's see just how much he wants that buyout money.

DITTO. The issue Preston anticipates is with the new Council. That is the Council he should address the issue with. He has no problem with the out going Council, the majority do what he asks. This would be the last favor they can do for him and it is at our expense.

Fried Green Mater,
Mr. Joey Preston has served Anderson County for 12 years. Many believe that his service has moved Anderson out of the dark ages, while others have learned to distrust his methods of conducting business. Those who love him compare his presence to the coming of the messiah, while those who hate him think of him as the antichrist. Personally, I believe that Mr. Preston’s record of service has been impressive, but too controversial and divisive.
Based on what we know at the present time, it is clear that the majority of the New Council has a hostile attitude toward Mr. Preston, while the majority of the Present Council remains appreciative of his long service. So, the Present Council needs to use political courage to do what is right for Anderson County before leaving office. Personally, I believe that allowing Mr. Joe Preston to end his contract with one year severance pay would be a good and wise compromise. This compromise can lead to the following benefits:
•It eliminates the possibility of a political battle between the New Council and the Administration.
•It avoids potential long, expensive legal battles.
•It assures present and future employees of Anderson County Government that Anderson County is capable of providing them with a fair and healthy environment to work and serve.
Art,
Have you spoken to the new Council members? I have spoken to one you refer to has having a "hostile attitude" and that is not true. Call them and ask them the direct question and get an answer for yourself.
Let the attorney do his job.
Allow the council he has the alleged problem with deal with the problem.
Allow the audit to be performed.
Let him resign if he wants to.

1-opinion,
No one wants to admit of having a hostile attitude. However, it is fair to say that the majority of the New Council does not have sufficient trust in the County Administrator. Consequently, I doubt that they can deal with him in a fair and objective manner. So, I strongly believe that the Present Council has an opportunity to deal gracefully with this dilemma and save Anderson County from a potential destructive, explosive situation.
We will have to agree to disagree. Preston has brought a lot of this on himself. Even for 12 years as the "Messiah" he has created much of this animosity that exists today and even encouraged much of it.
1-opinion I hope you don't mind, but I borrowed your quote and posted it on a thread on another forum after a torrent of "colorful language" by a poster there that used to post here. It seemed to be an appropiate 1st post for me there. [image]-nomadron
Yes that was fine. I read the response and it was a perfect example of the quotes validity. LOL

You can't trust the new council members. When asked a question like you suggest they parse the daylights out of the answer. They have to, because they are trying to appease the radio crowd.
If they are so "fair" why don't all three of them come out together and say something like "we have no concieved opinion on Mr. Preston. We plan to work with him to improve Anderson County. We want to work with Mr. Prston to reduce costs and invest more in infrastructure (or whatever). At this point we know of now reason to terminate his contract. We want him to know we value his contributin and we've told him that. We do not believe we were elected to fire anyone. We expect to meet the voters' demand for a full-audit and we're expecting Mr. Presotn to assist us on planning and excecuting said audit. We know of no wrongdoing on the part of County employees, including Mr. Preston. Naturally if through an audit or other review, wrong doing by anyone woroking for the county or elected officials will be dealt with accordingly.
They won't and they can't, unless they wish to anger the WAIM crowd and break ranks with Waldrep and C. Wilson. They won't because their motives are not in keeping with fairness.
None of this is about right, wrong or fairness. It's about vendetta, control and pettiness.
Pay the man and move on.
Republikin seems somewhat confused by some of her statements and questions:
Q: why don't all three of them come out together and say something like "we have no concieved opinion on Mr. Preston.
A: It is not possible for anyone that lives in this county not to have an opinion of Mr. Preston, whether good or bad.
Q: we know of no reason to terminate his contract. We want him to know we value his contributin and we've told him that.
A: The 3 new council members are good honest men. They would have to lie to make that statement.
Q: We do not believe we were elected to fire anyone.
A: Ask the majority of voters that voted them in office. They want Preston fired and have let him know it.
Q: we're expecting Mr. Presotn to assist us on planning and excecuting said audit.
A: Possibly, but not from his throne room. Fire him or put him on leave when we have an audit. It's the only way.
Q: We know of no wrongdoing on the part of County employees.
A: Again, they would have to lie to make such a statement.
Q: None of this is about right, wrong or fairness.
A: Has Preston been fair to Waldrep and C. Wilson and to the taxpayers of our county for the past 12 years. NO, he has not.
Obviously, Republikin is on Preston's payroll. One way or the other.

Prevail,
Your post clearly illustrates the expected attitude of the majority of the New Council. They have already decided that Mr. Joe Preston is guilty, and their job is to prove it. So, for the sake of Anderson County residents and employees, I hope that the Present Council will commit an act of courage and resolve the situation before it becomes a quagmire.
If the goal of Preston's critics was to get rid of him and replace him with someone else, why are they now so insistent that he be required to hang around for awhile?
Is this about fiscal conservatism and open government, or is it pure vindictiveness on the part of his critics?
And, Prevail, I can absolutely assure you that I am not on Joey Preston's payroll - not even on his Christmas card list, although I have spent time on a few of his other lists over the past two and a half years.

I get no money from Pretson, the County or any local entity. You and you like keep suggesting that to try and boster your hateful position.
Second, all your answer (if correct) point to precisely what Mr. Preston has indicated in his letter to council. In fact, if what you say is true, they have already made up their minds (or had them made up for them) to release Preston. Therefore, he is right ! Again !
Finally, I don't believe for a seond that the three elected "men" you referenced are good honest men when it comes to politics and power. They have said and done just about anyting to get eleceted and they will continue that ruse when they final take a seat on council.
We the people will pay for the WAIM hate crowd's so-called victory.

Art I hope this doesn't shock you. But, they are many county employees that voted for the new council members and want the new council to resolve the Administrator situation. So if you want the current council to resolve this say it plainly. But don't ask that it be done in the name of County residents and employees. The majority of those county residents that spoke through their vote and replaced three of the current council have made their views known. And as far as I know, no poll has been taken to determine the sentiment of all county employees (not just those at the top of the food chain). So you are making an assumption not based on fact.
I just think the new council should deal with any problems between them and the administrator. To pay someone who may have constructively resigned seems a monumental waste of money! It may not even be necessary. Perhaps the new council and the administrator can have a working relationship. But it is up to the new council after they are sworn in to office.
A fairly simple answer to such a simple question. If he is true to his word, he will insist he stays and is beyond reproach.

Obviously Prevail is on someones payroll. I wonder who ? Nonetheless, it is a waste of payroll resources.
No matter what we write here, Preston will 'prevail" against his enimies, he always has. Preston 12 MCWilson 0 - so have at another lawsuit.
