Imagine that some one gets on this blog and doesn't talk about the orginial topic. Well I won't let that man be me so here we go. As for Joey Preston resigning, I don't think he will do it becuase if he resignes right now he has no grounds for suite. Proabbly he will let this new council go ahead and hang themselves and hire that interim administrator and suspend or just fire him outright. Either way they would have very little in grounds so you are looking at a massive settlement probbly and rember Cindy has never won and Joey has never lost, so take your bets. Second thing they could try is to force him between two options either give him an order he cannot legally follow under the Home Rule Act and if he follows that he will be shot down by the state, if he doesn't well fire him for insubordination. What they forget is that now adays will get you in big trouble under some of the new federal laws you could see Joey sue twice once in state and again in Federal so if you think one is bad lets try two. We will have to have a bond referendum just to pay him. Really the best thing that can happen to this state is for the state to repeal Home Rule and to go back to the old system of one Senator per county and have representitives based on population inside that county and let the delegation run the county. No matter what one man one vote says.
Dixiecrat, you're doing a disservice to Ol' Strom there. He kinda liked States' Rights - AND Home Rule.
As for Joey, I actually agree with you. In chess terms, Joey just castled, and now it seems County Council - the current one and the new one - is going to have to back up and rethink its tactics.
Obviously there are an infinite number of scenarios we are all guessing at. How about this that Joey wants a buy out before the new council comes in, conducts their audit, finds something wrong and has him found guilty. Maybe he feels if he is out of the picture, there will be less likelihood of prosecution. Just a thought.
Can someone with perhaps an 'in' with Mr. Preston explain why he has objected to the open and transparent form of government?-mral
Al,
It's pretty simple: Open and transparent isn't free. In fact, by admission of the Comptroller General's office (remember Kevin's dog-and-pony at the Corner Bagel Shop earlier this year?), folks from the CG office ADMITTED that the online system was neither free nor complete. In fact, if you look at the CG's website that is touted as THE MODEL of "open and transparent," you'll find it's devoid of more details than it provides.
So, for those of us that DON'T view open and transparent as THE priority (that would be me, and others like me), and would prefer to drive over safe bridges, well maintained roads and the like, you'll have to forgive me if I find TOGA to be something to be achieved later.
Maslow ... should be required reading around here.
One final thing: For those that insist we know where everything is being spent before we spend anything else, I'd like to ask what you will do without water, fire and police protection while a "freeze" is put into place to conduct an end-to-end audit. Remember, this crowd DEMANDED what amounted to a penny in, penny out audit and have since backed away from it? Why? Well ... it's simple: Get Preston. This has NOTHING to do with a real audit or accountability. It's all about preserving a non-progressive, non-growth way of life in Anderson.
Pathetic - It's no wonder the railroad bypassed Anderson (see also Gen Easley) and Fluor Daniel ended up in Greenville (Mr. Daniel was run off from Anderson).

I told everyone they should learn to play chess. In the land of checkers, I suppose that's more trouble than it's worth. Sad - it will cost the incoming council.

I guess it all boils down to a definition of "open"...
I for one feel that as a taxpayer I have a right to know the whole financial details of all elected officials. Lets face it..they are all probably crooks skimming off as a result of their position... so they need to be able to totsally prove their innocence to all of us. We should be able to log on and see their tax returns in total.
Sadly, the law doesnt allow that...so I guess that blows the idea of real "open and accountable" government...now doesnt it?
Like i said..its all in the definition...
I too want safe bridges and roads and the necessary services needed in this county. Some people seem to think more taxes are required to meet these needs. My opinion is the money is there already in the budget, just not being properly accounted for nor is it being properly prioritized. How would I find out for sure? Someone convince me how to do this. Maslow had some great theories he just did have to deal with a tax structure in any of his steps.
Actually JD Strom wasn't a real big home rule feller. During his tenure as governor he actually imposed on the counties state power kinda often.
Has Joey Preston resigned? No way until he gets a pile of our money.
Did any of you read the Parade insert this morning? On page 20, Intelligence Report, "Could Your Town Go Bankrupt" article, read through it.
The author states that "when a town goes bankrupt, the local government itself is often to blame. In Vallejo, public employees were paid exorbitant salaries. In Alabama, a sewer system was financed by a risky debt scheme. When a city is on the edge basic maintenance will be delayed. Potholes don't get fixed, etc. To cover the shortfalls, cities raise fees or taxes."
Does this remind any of you about a certain county that we know? I wonder if Joey Preston is running another county in addition to Anderson County? After all, he is gone a lot and wont tell anyone where he is going, right? Their problems sound exactly like what we face here under his dictatorship.
It couldn't be....could it???
OK ya'll. I am listening to all this "what if" and "who is" and I want to ask a question. Considering that this here letter by that sexy Mr. Preston was suppose to be "Confidential" and assuming that that Dear Mr. Waldrep wouldn't dare violate any ethics that he took oath to not violate, how in tarnation did that heffer Liz get her greasy paws on a copy of that letter? That might be another ethics violation right there. Scoot over Cindy and make room. Did that ole Boss Hogg have something to do with this? Cuz usually when somthin stinks he's right in the middle of it. But I'm sure he might say "I didn't know what was going on."

Stamping "CONFIDENTIAL" on a piece of paper doesn't make it confidential. Controlling access to it makes it confidential. Obviously the parties involved didn't do that, therefore, it's not confidential.
Exactly right string...
I have an old "TOP SECRET" stamp from my days in the military. I can stamp things "TOP SECRET" in red ink with it all day long. It doesn't make it so!

In THIS county, if you want something made public and up for scrutiny, just mark it "Confidential & Private" and give it to Bob Waldrep to hold on to.
This whole bullship about JRP and the "four" makes me puke. All I know is tomorrow night I plan to voice my dissent with council and it's usurper principles it operates under in open council. I would imagine that WYATT may be banned from future meetings just like here....Hope the damn cameras are there this time!
To para-quote another blogger, they can't handle the truth!
Way to go Terry Chapman and Doreen Montepara for speaking up for Mr. Preston. If more of the general public would stand with him instead of sitting back and letting these morons take our county to hell we would be alot better off. As for Mr. Freemantle, Mr. Preston does not have an issue with open and honest government. He has issue with what is given and what Cindy will do with it. The leaking of this letter is a prime example of what kind of manipulative unethical people they are. They took something that was not suppose to be discussed and released it. Case and point.
