There it is the solution to all of our tax problems. We open casinos. Eliminate all other taxes. No one has to complain about unfair property taxes, capital project taxes, reassessments, bond issues, sales taxes, tuition fees, etc. No one has their arms twisted until they break to pay more taxes. Ta Da! Any questions? PS: I read where the state of Ohio just took a poll regarding opening casinos and the majority was in favor. Lets not let them get a jump on us!
Casino Gambling
Good idea, Kilkenny. The S.C. Legislature can't, with a straight face, say they're opposed to gambling, since they authorized the "South Carolina Education Lottery" a few years back, and that's gambling.
How 'bout it, Kevin? If it's okay for the STATE to run a gambling operation, why not farm out a few casinos to Harrah's or somebody? I know where there's more than 500 acres near Clemson that would be a GREAT locatio for a resort hotel/casino complex.
JD, would'nt the City of Pickens object to you offering them up for a "Sin City" gambling operation?

NEVER HAPPEN - GAMBLIN' IS A SIN..!
Just ask all the tax paying citizens who owned and operated video poker machines. One day they were licensed, tax paying, law abiding business operators. The next day they were 'criminals' and had to destroy their property without compensation.
The conservatives will (still) be arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin... and the Chinese will be landing on the moon.
G-P, for once we agree on something ... sort of.
The State of South Carolina has deemed gambling to be "illegal" under state law, yet at the same time the State of South Carolina both sanctions and profits from the Education Lottery - which is GAMBLING.
Either gambling is a sin or it's not a sin. Either is should be illegal or it shouldn't be illegal. And I personally think that if the State sanctions and profits from a statewide lottery, then video poker games, real poker games, parimutuel betting and all other forms of gambling should be LEGAL in this state. Otherwise, they need to be consistent and do away with that Education Lottery as part of a ban on all gambling.
I personally don't care if it's a sin or not. There are a lot of sins that are legal in this state - drinking, smoking (at least in cities where the Tobacco Gestapo doesn't rule) and running around with wild women (my personal favorite back when ol' JD could still remember why chasin' 'em was worth the effort.)
It's not about sin. It's about fairness and consistency.
Unfortunately, our representatives in the S.C. General Assembly do not understand the meaning of the word "hypocrite" - at least, as it applies to them and former Governor "Diamond" Jim Hodges.
I'm with you on that one, Wyatt. Ever since I traded my 401K in for a Y2K back in 1999, the lottery has been pretty much my best hope for retirement, too. Well, that and all those cases of MREs I stocked up on.
Seems they're all out of date now, though. I was eight or nine years early in stocking up, apparently.
In the past year I lost more than my total personal contributions to my 401(k) for the past 7 years! An overall loss of more than 60% value. I cashed out the remainder and took the penalty hit from Uncle Sam and decided from this time forward the cash gets stashed in a envelope, stuffed into a mason jar hidden behind a Funk & Wagnel encyclopedia. Am sure the $20.00 I have left will be safe there.
wyatt---Glad to hear someone has the same retirement as I do. I don't feel so alone now. I have my mason jar behind the World Books I never use. I couldn't afford Funk&Wagnel. I thought too about a casino boat on Lake Hartwell. Unfortunately had a boat been put out there on the water several months ago it would now be on dry land and therefore probably considered to be an illegal casino. Regarding 401Ks and the stock market those too are both gambles and we are all losing now. It is interesting how gambling and the "sin" there of is defined. If it is pouring money into big business or the schools, its OK. If it is for economic growth, job creation, recreation, tax elimination it is a sin.
Just another little thought on this casino gambling. Since the people pushing the Capital Projects Tax (CPT) are saying that 38% of the income from that will be from out of state/county people lets look at the casino. A casino located in Anderson county would pull from at least the two neighboring states. That (using assumptions like are used in the CPT program) would mean that two thirds or 75% of the gambling revenues would be coming from out of state/county. Wow another plus for gaming. To stretch this a bit further since most of the people of Anderson County seem to be against gambling and would not participate then all of the revenues from the casinos would not cost Andersonians a single cent!
Interesting math there Kenny. Seems you used the same numbers that those presuming Anderson will reap $165Million from a penny tax in five years. I predict in five years, legalized gambling may just be the ticket to generating money for many towns. Think about it: cops paid by lotto tickets; roads funded with scratch-offs; jails built with Bingo money; increased services funded by video poker profits....it's all good in the eyes of the lawd above when the end justifies the means.
While we're looking at revenue sources, why not legalize and profit from prostitution as well? Gambling and sex go arm in arm anyways, so lets make this an all around Win-win for Andrson? Already have prostitution problems which are not slowing, and dozens of private clubs offering poker, pool, dice and varieties of football/basketball/racing betting pools. Why ain't we getting a slice of that pie as well?
If there is no money to pay bills, pay workers etc. Where is the money coming from to play poker Machines.
Another food stamp trade to play... bad time to revisit that issue in my opinion.
Even Vegas memorabilia dealers are being robbed!

Ahhh, never let WYATT hold you back from sharing your views here vent....Always love bashing wellies and wife-killers on an open forum.
Venter, yes, but when the economy does come back that dad-gum casino will be a gold mine!
I agree that gambling and prostitution would be a gold mine for some, but not government.
Politicians would find a way to make gambling unprofitable, and keep the prostitutes so busy they would not have time to work. (I mean with investigation and hearings ya know)

Venter---You have just come up with a great idea. If the prostitutes can keep the politicians busy enough they won't have time to meddle in government and "fix" things that aren't broken in the first place. PS My scheme may require hiring on more Ladies of the Evening! This will provide even more job creation for the County. I'm tell'n ya this is a win win situation. By the way at the risk of someone without a sense of humor reading this I would say regarding the ad above for the Williamston Wellness Clinic to take care of addicted gamblers, their business could pick up. Once again more job creation for the county. Lets say that an additional 1000 people become addicted to gambling and are treated at the Williamston Clinic. By the same token the taxes derived from gambling would take care of the 10s of thousands of people in the County who currently do not have medical or dental care, need food, help with utility bills, and other services. So we would add 1000 people to the "need help" rolls, but would have removed several thousand in the deal by providing for their needs!
