Gang Violence In Anderson

It seems as though with all of the violence (gang related)in Anderson that has been reported lately, that the gangs didn't get the memo about the Gang Task Force created about a year ago in Anderson County. Are the gangs not attending the meetings? Do they even know or care that there is a gang task force? Maybe the gang task force needs to go into the neighborhoods where the problems are instead of meeting with law enforcement officials at the library. Apparently the gangs don't visit the library very much. By the way if the task force does go into the neighborhoods, be sure to do it at night when you can really meet the gang members. Going during the day won't do any good because most gang members don't get up until after sundown.

Well the problem is that for so many years people around here did not want to admit that gangs are a problem.Even now you hear the excuse of " oh its only kids who are pretending they belong to a gang" Well trust me I see it all the time, these kids are not playing. Everytime I see gang "art" I first notify the sheriff dept.then I take pictures of each one. Then to really piss off the gang bangers I go out and paint over the "art" If the marks are on street signs I call county or state roads and have them changed out. I will not put up with that garbage in my neighborhood. If your interested in some of the gang signs that we have gotten rid of just look at the Homeland Park website and we have pictures on there.

The old law enforcement platform of I CAN DO MORE WITH LESS does'nt work any more.

State Goverment , County and City Councils need to provide more funding to increase the amount of officers thru out the state. Gangs are bad and it will take aggressive enforcement to control their increasing numbers and acts of violence.

I don't think Anderson County would allow the Law to be enforced as it should be. Citizens should be able to defend their families and property. The thieves and thugs who are taken to to jail should get swift justice. No favors for the crooks hiding behind politics, money ,or goverment positions. I don't think Anderson County is ready for the Marshall & Festus to ride in and deal out justice. To much politics.

I have a couple of people in mind from this blog for Festus's job description, if you change your mind. Laughing Thanks for the trivia answer. I could not think of his name.

I would suggest that the next Anderson County Gang Task Force meeting be held at the Belton Woods apartment complex. It would seem as though attendance should be pretty good and it certainly wouldn't be preaching to the choir.

I think that Tony Stewart, Gracie Floyd, Horace Alexander, the recently retired Capt. Johnson and a few others should 'work' the gang neighborhoods...on foot... after dark from about 9PM until 6 AM and talk to the real gang members and invite them to their task force meetings at the Belton Woods Apts. After a few nights come back and tell us there are no gangs in Anderson. That is...if you are able to come back.

Belton woods would be a great place to start. The manager Holly who runs the dump REFUSES any help.we spoke with her about the problems there and she said she does not want the bad publicity. I know for a fact that she makes her clean up crews go into known meth apartments without any protective gear. When her staff questions her about this she fires them. This is a manager who just wants to keep up her rental rates so she can get her bonuses. So in short until she is gone nothing will happen.

Hmm, if only the absent manager there felt it important enough to care about the residents instead of the padded occupancy numbers and Section 8 checks.  I'm personally aware that this manager was spoken to several times about creation of a community-based group to address and self-police the property.  She was also handed Gracie Floyd's phone number and contact e-mail to get this rolling ( Belton Woods is in District 2, while Homeland park Task Force is in District 5), as well as Gang information from the City/County Joint Task Force.  The response from her was she did not want undue attention to the problems and issues drawn to her property, by press, politicians or Edgewood Management Group ( the owners). In speaking with Ms. Floyd and Mark Gregory aboutthe conditions, their hands are tied because this is privately-owned complex and the response by law enforcement MUST be initiated by the owners and management.  As recent news & police reports show, Belton Woods is still a hotbed of gang and criminal activities. Shootings, rampant drug activity, gang members/ tagging of property, and inhabitation by dozens & dozens ofundocumented felons & under-the-radar parolees shacked up with female Section 8 recipients are more common than working residents.   As long as the Section 8 checks and government subsidies continue to roll in, it's all about see no evil, hear no evil, report no evil, I'll stop in on Friday( paydays)!

I feel sorry for those living there who are NOT involoved with this activity.

I see that once again (Oct 11,08) the Belton Woods apartment complex has made the news for yet another shooting. I still say the Gang Task Force needs to hold their meetings there. Turn out should be very good. Can nothing be done at that complex?

I'm sure that money has a lot to do with this manager not cooperating with law enforcement, but does anyone think that she may have been threatened by these gangs/criminals to not cooperate or she would "pay"?  I'm just wondering if they promised her some type of protecttion if she would be willing to cooperate more.  I obviously don't have all the details as does those that have been involved with getting her to copperate, so maybe some of you (Angel, Wyatt) may have already thought about this.

I myself am getting tired of hearing about all the violence in Anderson.  I'm assuming that the recent increase is 100% gang related.  And a lot of it is happening on my side of town.  Shootings at stores I commonly visit.  Shooting in the streets I normally travel.  It's rediculous.  If there is a Gang Task Force here in Anderson, then what have they accomplished so far?  Are there accomplishments documented somewhere for the public to view?

No, the manager just does not want to be bothered. Look at the job she has posted in AIM for help @ the complex in Columbia she runs. Guess what, that complex has an average of 2 to 3 shootings a month. This woman ( and I put that lightly) is hardly ever at the complexs. We have offered to help her with all the problems out there, she flat out refuses. We even suggested helping her start her own community group. She went as far as to say she does not want any community meetings held there,as there is nothing wrong with Belton Woods. This manager is only there for a paycheck & bonuses. Things will never change until Edgewood company gets rid of her...

As another note if anyone wants to start their own community group, I am more then willing to help them start one.

No Angel, the bulls**t that terrorizes those at Belton Woods uses car!  They're too lazy to walk!!!

But on a note:  ONE of the three was charged, the other two MINORS were released ( Thought owning handguns was illegal for teenagers?)

Well until the gang task force gets more funding the detectives can only address the aftermath. The county needs to redefine their priorities and increase the gang task force to proactively go after these issues. And parents need to do their job. It takes more than giving birth to be a parent.

Good point Jane. Creating a baby takes only a few minutes. Raising one to become a productive responsible citizen takes about 18 years or so on the average. Where are the parents? Why should we taxpayers have to pay to take care of these children either through welfare programs or as a last resort as jail inmates? What ever happened to responsibility?
