To my surprise, Mr. Don Bowen, Representative of SC District 8, has agreed to a debate with challenger Dr. Tom Dobbins at Anderson Main Public Library on October 2, 7:00 PM. This debate is organized by Anderson County Taxpayers Association, chaired by Ed Jean.

Both Mr. Bowen and Dr. Dobbins are great public servants, with intense contrasting views of how the state should be governed. Mr. Bowen has strong conservative Republican views, while Dr. Dobbins is an old-fashioned Democrat. Mr. Bowen greatest passion is smaller government and lower taxes, while Dr. Dobbins’ main focus is a greater education system.

I didnt know that bowen was still in columbia. This is the first time in 2 years I have seen his name mentioned. Kinda sad, if you think about it. Doesnt say much about his impact on Anderson County, now does it?

Don Bowen is a fine man, who has really worked hard for District 8.  While he is a Republican, it can be said that he looks at all sides of an issue.  He works tirelessly on educatioin issues, and was recently appointed to the Education and Public Works committee.

I can't find a reason not to vote for him.  I don't know the Dobbins guy.  I understand that he was on District 4's school board or something.  Not sure.

Sounds to me that people need to turn out for the debate to see what these two candidates are all about.

Bowen is a Howard Rich/SC Club for Growth Guy. See also the ringing endorsement he received from them in 2006:

http://www.scclubforgrowth.com/pdf/NewEndorsements.pdf

But hey . . . he MIGHT have changed since then. His campaign statements thus far do not include donations from Howard Rich, et al.

Oh . . . that Howard Rich guy . . . here JD, even you have to agree with this:

From Vierdsonian Democracy (another EXCELLENT political blog):
http://vierdsen.wordpress.com/
" ...However one feels about the school choice issue, everyone should agree that democracy is subverted when an out-of-state millionaire can come in and finance candidates to the point to where he’s created a political party by proxy, accountable to him."

Now do you understand why so many of us are opposed to Howard Rich, his money, and the facade that he hides behind (I'm for the children and school choice).

Shhh. Listen closely! That steady sucking sound you hear is Bowen's political future vortexing right down the proverbial drain. This guy's election was a fluke and he will without a doubt be a one hit wonder. Dobbins is polling strong and will throttle Bowen on November 4th. Throw party out the window on this one. Dobbins is old line Anderson and carpetbagger Bowen's undistinguished two years in Columbia will earn him the coveted position of former legislator come January.

I hope that many readers will realize that attending this debate is a golden and rare opportunity to learn the positions of these two candidates.

While I do not question Mr. Don Bowen character or commitment to public service, I have personally encountered his reluctance to answer questions and make his views public. In addition, I have been informed that other groups have failed to gain his agreement to engage in political debates with his opponent, Dr. Tom Dobbins.

On the other hand, Dr. Tom Dobbins is relatively new to the political arena in Anderson County. And although he is very vocal and eager to make his views public, very few truly know where he stands on the issues.

So, I hope many will attend and ask the relevant questions, civilly and respectfully. However, I do not expect a large turnout.
