As I sat and watched Senator McCain’s speech today I was taken back to Bush ‘41 and his infamous ‘read my lips’ pledge.
Here was McCain emphatically stating that under his administration he would never raise taxes.
I guess his health insurance plan had slipped his mind and that of his speechwriter’s.
Under the McCain plan, the 70% of insured Americans covered through their employer would have any employer paid health benefits treated as income and therefore would be a new item subject to Federal taxes.
Oops. . .

C'mon, Pappy! You know politicians on both sides would immediately argue with a straight face that that is a new tax, not an increase in an old tax. Thus, our mother tongue suffers greater and greater indignities.

In defense, I did note that one definition of ‘raise’ is,” Summon into action or bring into existence, often as if by magic “.

And Speaker Jim Wright made sure Pres died by the words. "Read my lips; no new taxes." Wright knew he had GHWB as soon as those words were uttered. I think it was Regan that referred to Wright as a wily old snake....

George H.W. Bush was just misunderstood. What he ACTUALLY said was, "Read my lips - NO NUDE TEXANS."

Why not magic? For the past 8 years shrub has been hoping that the 'truth fairy' would swing by and make his lies all come true.
