POORLY VETTED ??

If Senator McCain had fully vetted his running mate, he would not have made the following statement in Wisconsin on Friday:

"You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay -- and made a profit!"
The video tribute to Palin that aired at the RNC on Thursday night made the same assertion.

The fact is that Palin  didn‘t sell the plane on eBay. She asked too much.
Secondly, the plane which cost 2.7 million, listed for 2.5 million on eBay was unsuccessfully put up for sale three times on this internet auction block.

The plane was privately sold to an Alaskan businessman:for 2.1 million.
Profitable ? State officials said they sold it through a broker for $2.1 million - a loss.

I would say it is a good bet that the businessman that bought it also was a Palin campaign contributor.

I believe Governor Palin said she "put" it on Ebay.  I don't think she said she "sold" it on ebay.  If a car cost
$20,000.00 today what would it be worth tomorrow?  Considerably less than what you paid for it.  So, it only makes sense that it would sell for less than what was paid for it.

The operating cost for an airplane is extremely expensive.  It only goes to prove her fiscal conservatism that she would sell the plane and eliminate the costs of operating such an expensive piece of equipment.

I applaud her for it.  Regardless, of what is sold for or how it was sold.

Come on Pappy it's not all poor judgment or bad news.
She never said she SOLD it on e-bay, just listed it.
Also after cost to operate and US Marshal flights, the Jet was not as needed as it once was.
Took a loss on the plane, Sound to me she saved her state money, it's called downsizing.
Here is a quote.
By Jason George and Andrew Zajac | Chicago Tribune correspondents
September 5, 2008

JUNEAU, Alaska — When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin sought to illustrate her frugality and flair to delegates at the GOP convention Wednesday, she described how she disposed of a corporate jet acquired by her unpopular predecessor.

"That luxury jet was over the top," Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, said to loud cheers. "I put it on eBay."

Palin's statement implied the plane was sold through the online auction site revered for empowering millions of small entrepreneurs, and Palin's spokeswoman insisted Thursday that the transaction occurred. But the plane failed to sell on eBay.

Instead, the 23-year-old 10-seat Westwind II was sold in August 2007 for $2.1 million to a Valdez, Alaska, entrepreneur; that's about $300,000 less than a broker's asking price, according to news accounts.

Also, while Palin characterized the plane as an extravagance of former Gov. Frank Murkowski, who arranged for its purchase in November 2005, the plane saw heavy use transporting Alaskan convicts.

Alaska does not have adequate prison capacity and contracts for space with a private facility near Phoenix. On Thursday, 24 percent of the 4,546 Alaskans in jail or in prison were serving their time at Arizona's Red Rock Correctional Center, said a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Corrections.

When the state first began using the plane in November 2005, prisoner transport accounted for 58 percent of the jet's use, and Murkowski's office used it 23 percent of the time. Over time, Murkowski's usage increased.

Today, the U.S. Marshals Service transports 90 percent of Alaska prisoners to Arizona.

The last U.S. Marshal flights to and from Arizona transported 145 prisoners at a cost of $127,000, or about $875 per prisoner. That's cheaper than the jet, whose per-prisoner cost averaged $1,674. (end quote)

Thank you pappy for proving to us all how Sara will be good for us all! Wink

I don't understand.

When Democrats do this to a REPUBLICAN candidate, it's called "vetting."

When Republicans do it to a DEMOCRATIC candidate, it's called "swiftboating."

What's the difference?

Yankeefan, a-venter, etal,

Please, READ my comment, Where did I say anything about what Palin SAID ?

The thrust of my topic was the failure of the vetting process that resulted in McCain making a statement that was untrue. He should have been made aware of the real story. Once he was it's absense from later speecvhes is obvious.

Incidentally, I applauud Palin for getting rid of the jet. Too much luxury is paid for a governor's use in most states.

Of course, I wouldn't be a good Democrat if I didn't point out that the jet was too large to land at most Alaskan air strips.

Hank,

Not sure what depresiation is, can't find it in the dictionary.

If you mean 'depreciation', like in LIFO and FIFO, then I probably have forgotten more about that subject than you ever knew.

That notwithstanding, please READ my comment. I never said it was a loss, Alaskan officials made that statement, as I noted.

Maybe I should have just referred to threads like this one as "The Swiftboating of Sarah Palin," PAPPY. Wouldn't have left any doubt about what I mean.

Excuse me pappy, your right.
McCain needs his hand smacked for not clarifying the difference in listing on e-bay and selling on e-bay.

And again thank you for bringing the good things McCain's VP choice has done. You just keep clicking up those Republican votes. SurprisedWink

C'mon, JD,

You can, have and will do a lot better than this.  You seem to think my topic had to do with Palin. I didn't knock her, I even complimented her for selling that jet.

My topic was about the lack of vetting of his running mate. Full vetting would have disclosed the true story about the sale and saved McCain's embarressment of not knowing the true story.

Also, vetting has nothing to do with swiftboating. Vetting seeks the truth about a candidate's backround while swiftboating seeks to distort that truth.

Hank,

I've noticed that when you have nothing to say, you say it anyway.

"Let's not play games," he said. "What I was suggesting -- you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you're absolutely right that that has not come." - Barack Obama to Doogie Stephanopoulos on Sunday, September 7.

Wow, PAPPY. Was that just a slip of the tongue by Obama (I thought he told us he was CHRISTIAN?), or has he not been fully "vetted" by the American people?

This game's a lot of fun, but like Obama's "57 states" slip, it really proves nothing.

Good grief, G-P! Did you notice the size of the joint Mr. Towlie is holding in his right hand? And look at his eyes! What kind of party was Mattel holding that day? Surprised
