That's what JD the Damned Redneck thinks.

I'll betcha Prevail follows this post with another of his stupid posts claiming he's not a liar. But we already know he is, don't we? Any man who loudly proclaims, "I do not lie" ... LIES!

I think I can safely say that, can't I?

Ready for a truce, Prevail? I can play your silly game as long as you want to play, bud.

My point old dear sir is that posters like you who feel that they are the core usaers and the only ones whos opinion or comments are worthy of being printed/posted seem to get just as rilled up over nothing as any of us.
in your little anger at pididle you seemed to bash everyone on the blog.
So you can call liar liar paints on fire all you wish. but just remamber....
its as funny as hell to watch you get all twitterpated.

JD: I shouldn't be surprised really, but you must know me too well.

Challenging my guts and my desire to stand and fight ... well, I deserve your rebuke. I am most definitely not a quitter, but God has given me enough wisdom to know that there are some battles that aren't worth fighting and there are some battles where a victory actually is a defeat.

To put it plainly, the reason I have admired you, JD, since the beginning, is that you, of all the core users, seem to grasp instantly what I was trying to accomplish on this forum and, most importantly, how fragile a community like this really is.

As the week without the foul four showed, it only takes a couple of bad apples to destroy the whole barrel.

This forum needs healthy, healthy doses of light-heartedness, along with a willingness to learn, and the flexibility to realize that those who disagree with you aren't enemies, but worthy opponents. The worst thing is to take it too seriously, even when there's a serious purpose behind it.

Before I offer my 2 cents about what the history of this forum tells us about modern scoeity, I will say this:

I am willing to help transition this forum to whatever the core users want it to be. Part of moving to this platform -- bugs worked out and all -- was to give us more practical and legal flexibility for community moderation.

My core belief is clear and unequivocal: Let the people speak freely and be heard and the public officials who are supposed to represent their interests will act accordingly. After a stutltifying period between 1996 and 2006, I thought it was time to empower the grass roots. I forgot that around roots, there also are weeds.

BUT

If this forum is going to be an obscene free-for-all, I WANT IT TO DIE and quickly.

If the loyal users and readers know what it can healthily accomplish they will agree to the only reasonable recourse: a lightly moderated forum consisting of an operating board of moderators who have the discretion (and the respect of the community) to delete posts that are offensive, flaming or simply meant to cause trouble, greased with a few private messages back and forth, perhaps, just to make sure they moderators are not overreacting. (We can all be guilty of that.)

They should also have the power to ban, but the board would have to be unanimous on that in my opinion.

As far as the ground rules go, I think it might be a perfect opportunity for some collaborative writing ... perhaps we could ask everyone take a hand in writing them? Easy to create a topic, throw up some suggestions, and let folks "revise" them until we get the finished piece that we can mostly agree on.

Before I decided to close Straight Talk, I had come up with a similar moderation plan that got hung up on the technical and legal issues of turning over a platform (and it's operation, maintenance and private information) to everyday folks. I'll see if I can fish it out.

We could also vote for the proposed "gang of five" moderators -- two left, two right and one centrist -- by asking for a show of thumbs or some such..... (I do think the power of the thumbs is under-estimated. In a world of such sharp differences of opinion, and in a community as sizeable as The Cocklebur, anything from a -2 to +2 is basically an endorsement of it being within bounds. It's the two thirds rule: If two-thirds of people can agree on something, it's pretty much the most unanimity you're likely to get.

The Cocklebur can be saved ... and my decision to walk away was simply because it seemed to my ears as though some of the membership was either painfully naive or in outright rebellion, ridiculously suggesting that this whole enterprise was some oblique and crafty way to push my agenda ... "politics by other means." I can think of way easier ways to do that, believe me.... how about about resurrecting my blog for goodness sake!

From the moment that I ended my true blog, my sole purpose was to allow ideas from the left and right to live or die in the grand marketplace of ideas that our great American founders understood and were willing to trust with the fate of a far greater enterprise than this.

So, in closing, whatever happens here, the outcome will be a mis en scene of our poisoned and paranoid political atmosphere and it will be an object lesson in what happens when the public devalues professionally-sourced information and along with it, the role of the mainstream media in refereeing a rational, community-wide debate while doing its best to minimizing the noise that adds nothing to our collective understanding, except to alert us to "pain" or discomfort.

After a long career in journalism, I have certainly seen much to dislike about the business. But if the smart, relatively sophisticated audience of the Cocklebur can't figure this out, it says a lot about the new information wild west ....

Personally, I think it's going to brutal on our democracy, and far more importantly, brutal on our personal and professional reputations. God help us all.

Nick, take a look at my lenghty post on "The Final Exam" thread that I was working on while you were working on this one. I thought you had already gone to bed for the night. Wink
Glad you're giving The Cocklebur another chance. As I've said repeatedly, I admire you for having created it out of nothingness, and I admire you for having nurtured it to this point. I really, really, didn't believe for a minute you were just going to let it die a natural death.
On the other hand, I do hope you understand what I was doing on here the past two days when it's future was in doubt. As I've said before, there's madness in my method.
Wait, I think I said that backwards. Laughing
Anyway, since - thanks to Prevail's badgering and my calculated risk in revealing my identity to all - I have no secrets here anymore, I would be more than happy to be one of your "panel" of moderators, and I'm sure others would also be happy to take that burden off your shoulders. I've never been intimidated by those "weeds" in The Cocklebur Garden - even now that I've revealed personal information to somebody who's obviously mentally unstable - and I don't intend to back down now.
The war can be won, Nick. You may lose a battle or two along the way, but always keep your eyes on the prize. I'll stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you as long as you're willing to fight for it.
But I will also agree with you on this: If The Cocklebur is to become an obscene free-for-all and an outlet for venomous posts designed to destroy INDIVIDUALS at will and an outlet for the most vicious, hateful political attacks partisans on both sides can manufacture, then may it die a quick and merciful death. I think my post on the other thread expresses that sentiment strongly

So nick what is a core member anyway?
Someone who was here the longest, the most post, uses the biggist words, the most words, kisses the most but?
Thats what Mr. Hankey would like to know.

also I still think if you could block post from selected users in each users profile then posters would never have to see post from others that they wiish not to see. but the ones who would like to can.

I've gone back and forth the last day or so. At first, I thought we needed to rally and fix this thing. Then as I read posts from the last couple of days, I came to the conclusion that the Cocklebur's time had come to an end. There did not seem to be much redeeming in what was being posted. Today, I've read the ideas, and I think it's worth one last shot. However, this "last stand" of sorts cannot be done half-heartedly. I agree with Nick, AVenter, and JD that some form of moderation is necessary. From what I've read of other forums, it seems that they generally use the plan Nick discusses above

"If the loyal users and readers know what it can healthily accomplish they will agree to the only reasonable recourse: a lightly moderated forum consisting of an operating board of moderators who have the discretion (and the respect of the community) to delete posts that are offensive, flaming or simply meant to cause trouble, greased with a few private messages back and forth, perhaps, just to make sure they moderators are not overreacting. (We can all be guilty of that.)
They should also have the power to ban, but the board would have to be unanimous on that in my opinion."

Other than this, I think we all need to think more seriously about the thumbs up/thumbs down system. I've found myself giving the thumbs up to posts I disagree with because I thought they were given the thumbs down because of the opinion itself. This isn't a popularity contest feature; it is a means of controlling the board. Anyway, I think we can all do this, but it remains to be seen whether it will work.

I think you are all over reacting AGAIN. Nick, you and JD overreaced before with the "Foul Four" by tossing Mr. Hankey in the Sin bin with the other three that apparently did deserver to have a time out, and you are doing it again.

First JD had enough and wrote his typical long lecture to all us lower blog lifeforms and said his good-bye's. Only to be drawn back by the banter of the other bloggers.

And you Nick. You whine and cry about this blog more than my neices do at bed time. Here is the simple solution Nick.

1. Take some responsibility if you want to keep this blog going. If a post is out of bounds meaning slanderous, obseen, or foul, then warn and ban the poster. Don't just run in the room and start banning anyone who's name JD and any other Blog luncher wispers in you ear privatly. It is your responsibility.

If you don't want that responsibility then shut down the blog. Your dream of the blog utopia will never be realized. Some people disagree and the don't agree to disagree and shake hands and go have a beer together and that is a fact. This blog has nevr been taken seriously by most if not all elected officials, despite what some may say or think. It is and always was viewed as interesting........like a train wreck waiting to happen. It is entertainment......with some interesting topics once in a while.

Actuially, the only thing that gave this Dying blog a lease on life is the banning of the "Foul Four". And JD......I am a bit hurt at not being singled out in your good-bye post. I believe I was the leader in trying to get MR. Hankey's ban reversed blasting Nick every hour our two, as he was unjustly thrown under the bus by the high and mighty core user.......YOU.

Back to my point. Nick, it's your blog. If you don't want it. Shut it down or sell it to someone else.

You created it, you manage it. No gang of "Five" to want to ban users. That will just be more back room or BLOG Lunch deals. Secret deals got you blasted the last time you listened to the bloggers here.

And to the rest of the bloggers here, take this blog for what it is. Fun and entertaining. I get some pretty good laughs from this blog and hate to see it go. I ignore posts that I may not like and have not lost any sleep over anyone attacking or countering any of my posts.

So post away and have fun.

Now look what you've gone and done.......you made me write a post nearly as long as Nick and JD's...............

VOR, while I agree with some of your post, I do think some are over-reacting, I don't think I ever got the feeling that this forum would die, I have seen it lag a little but we have all seen that before, but there is something that pulls everyone back when their lives are back in the normal path, (no holidays, vacations, storms, etc.) It seems whenever there is a mass anything such as the list above things slow down a little, but it comes right back especially when there is a hot button issue, we are now in the thick of the election cycle, no way this will slow down until after the elections, this is one place where people can go and get their voices heard even if some think us ignorant or rude.

I do think VOR that some of your post is just way over the top. This is not just bout those of us that attend the lunches. This is an open forum for anyone, the lunches are just an oppourtunity to meet and put faces on the bloggers, doesn't mean we all agree on any one issue or for that mtter disagree on any one issue. In fact I would bet that if you or anyone else asked any one question you would get a 50/50 deal.

Wow! Maybe 'ole JD and others don't care much for Hankey's "shicht" (unban dictionary for poo) but every once and awhile 'ole Hankey nails it !

Hankey's right. Who appointed them blog kings and queens ?

I always hoped republikin wasn't Amy. I like Amy.

Actually Hankey's "schtick" never bothered me, but I always found it amusing that he or she (I think Hankey is a girl, but that's neither here nor there)couldn't quite ever get the phonetics right so that the satire was readable. The irony that someone trying to pretend to be stupid was actually being stupid always made me chuckle. However, to think that Hankey is perfectly innocent is laughable. She is a flamer, that's part of her "schtick," so don't act as if she should be treated more respectfully. She is a pile of poo, literally.

The moderators to me would be a group of interested parties who reflect a variety of opinions. They aren't nearly as scary as you few seem to think (though it does not shock me that you are worried). I envision this board something like this:

TheQueen for the conservative leaners
blogger for liberal leaners
AVenter seems moderate
NomadRon for the conservative leaners
Petunia for the liberal leaners

2 left wingers, 2 right wingers, and a moderate tie breaker, and posters who are generally not as controversial.

I think JD is too mired in controversy at this point to be a moderator, no offense JD.

This moderation is something that should be used sparingly, only to allow for the continued use of the Cocklebur before it becomes the prevail v. rino show and dies the same death as Straight Talk.

ibvirginia:

I'm totally oppossed to "moderators." I would tolerate Nick, since it's his blog. Otherwise, leave it wide open except for nasty, dirty words or links whcih can be filtered. As JD alludes, the best way to deal with "flamers" is to ignor them. When i'm ignored, I feel right at home, with spouse and children.

Mr. Hankey says vote them in and vote them out. this is America! and it should be run like America.

and you be virginia- whats makes you so unbiased?
again Mr. hankey was the only poster to volenter for moderator when nick was looking for the sacrifical lamb to do the dirty work. Mr. hankey is no flamer. Mr. Hankey gets on public figures like Lil' Stanley and little rickey drivebi because they are bad for the comunity. The support and condone alot of bad pooh. and part of Mr. Hankey thinks they do it only for the radio just so they look big.
They are public figures because they stick their face in every chance they can. That makes them fair game in Mr. Hankeys book. Littly rick and lil' Sanley have a radio show and a weekly rag to procreate their filth. Mr. Hankey has this bolg & the Hankey family business. we don't advertise on Waim or use their advertisers. but to get out an oposing voice, this blog is about all you got. So far be it for Mr. Hankey the Damn Yankee to leave that in the hands of the haters.

and BTY who on earth said Mr. Hankey was trying to pretend to be stupid?

-ibvirginia

No offense taken, Virginia. Even left-leaners can be right at times, and this is one of those times. Wink

Besides, the JDTippett screen name probably has to disappear soon anyway. A blog name can be at the forefront if the journalist behind it is well hidden in the background. (Where's Waldo?) A reporter can work if a blog name remains well hidden in the background. They cannot exist openly together, especially if the reporter doesn't necessarily agree with the blog persona.

Since I'm the one with the accrued retirement benefits and JD is barely two years old, he's drawn the short straw in this dilemma. Nick is absolutely right about how complicated the internet "news" era is for those who prefer to follow the old rules of journalism. I don't see the whole concept ending well, frankly, but it's gone too far to put the genie back in the lamp now.

In my topic Banned...Final Chapter, I told you how I had explained to Nick that it is not fair to use the thumbs method since his liberal posters outnumber the conservative posters and could control what is expressed. Nick replied with a very childish answer.

Now, his new method of letting a few bloggers get together and delete all the post they want to regardless of content but based on who the poster is carries the goal of AIM and Nick one giant step further: AIM and Nick can now say they had absolutely nothing to do with deleting those posts, that fellow posters decided to do it on their own. Just another way to silence free speech folks.
I'm glad to see a few of you thinking that maybe I was right when I brought up the thumbs issue. Hope you all get to read this before they thumbs down on it.

I'm not saying that I get to choose those people. I'm saying those are the types of people we should all consider electing. I'm not unbiased Hankey, that's why I haven't offered to be a moderator, and why I didn't put my name in that list. I have little patience for stupid or ignorant people, and I wouldn't want to be tempted by the ability to censor someone just because he or she is an idiot.

And your spelling has improved significantly in the last day or so. Congratulations on your lightning fast education.
