Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, a town of 6,500, less than 2 years ago.

That's the size of Belton.

You'd think given McCain's advanced age, they'd at least take the VP position seriously.

And can anybody really say with a straight face that a man with the same credentials ever would have been considered for the VP slot?

Andrew, if the Democratic Party and voters aren't willing to take seriously the issue of EXPERIENCE in selecting their No. 1 candidate on the ticket, why should we Republicans be expected to take it seriously for our No. 2 pick on our ticket?

Does experience matter, or does it not? Make up your mind. If it DOESN'T matter, then your post is meaningless spin. If it DOES matter, we win on the strength of the TOP OF THE TICKET.

By the way, I just Googled it. Not a single one of the four at the top of the two Presidential tickets has any experience as either President of the United States OR Vice President of the United States. Hmmmm.

Just when you need an OwlGore, or a Waltre Mondull, or a Dick Cheney, there's not one to be found anywhere. Laughing

Yep Andrew. One of these items is not like the others: 3 US Senators; 1 Alaskan governor. They should have just rounded it out by picking another Senator - Elizabeth Dole of NC or Kay Bailey Hutchison of TX would come to mind. Then 4 percent of the sitting US Senate would be running for President instead running the country (as we elected them to do) And Alaska only has 660,000 residents. There are more people than that in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties.

By the way, Mark Sanford was my choice for McCain's running mating. God knows Washington needs him more than we do. Maybe he'd have taken Kevin Bryant with him. Either that or find way to extract Kevin head from his......uh, you know. Probably easier just the take him.

I kind of agree with you on Mark Sanford as running mate for McCain, WPD. The problem with that is, if he had been the choice, he would've been back in South Carolina by November 5 because he would have added NOTHING to the Republican ticket.

Going back to Sarah Palin's experience, I can only imagine how far she could have risen in politics had she not wasted so years of adult life doing such meaningless work as RAISING HER KIDS. Wink

Part of the reason for the disparity of wages between men and women (remember that ol' Democratic argument about "equal pay for equal work?") is that many women take time out of their careers to raise children. When they re-enter the workplace, not only do they not get credit for doing that heavy lifting in our society, but they are PENALIZED for it when they are consistently passed over for promotions and ignored when career-enhancing opportunities come along.

It is absolutely fascinating to me that the Democrats are now attacking Sarah Palin mercilessly for taking advantage of an opportunity to break through that "glass ceiling" despite having sacrificed many years of her potential political career to do something so "disgusting" as to be a mother.

John McCain has handed her an opportunity. She has taken it. Now, let's see which party is SERIOUS about equality of opportunity for everybody and which party is just empty rhetoric designed to pander for votes. We're already getting some serious hints here.

So is Andrew saying McCain's Veep pick has more experience than Obama?

Sounds like what he said, Ed. Maybe we just misread that. Surely Andrew didn't type the TRUTH when the truth might damage his Messiah. Laughing

Of course, Ed, if we're going to talk about EXECUTIVE experience, Sarah Palin actually has more of that than Barack Obama, John McCain and Joe Biden combined (unless you count McCain's experience in the Pentagon in the late 1970s and early 1980s or filling out obscure military forms in triplicate.)

Lack of "executive" experience is the reason no U.S. Senator has gone directly from the Senate to the White House since John F. Kennedy pulled the stunt off in the 1960 election. That 48-year-old streak will broken this year, for sure, but let's face it: Sarah Palin already knows more about running the executive branch of government than either of the others does.

I will deny saying this, but I have always thought of all the R's that ran to get to this point McCain was probably the best. I am still voting for the democratic candidate but if McCain wins I will not fall into a deep depression. As for his choice of running mates I am concerned about her lack of experience. I know this is cause for concern with Obama and I won't deny that, but Obama has Biden to support him. If something happens to McCain and this woman with her limited experience is put in the commanders seat who will help guide her? I know what Biden is bringing to the ticket but I have yet to figure what assets she will add besides her gender. I know I would not have near as many qualms if he had chosen E. Dole or Kay Hutchinson. She is still a very young woman, even had she not taken time off to have children, and I don't know that she has JD there doesn't seem to be a big break in her resume, she would still only be 44 and as a 45 year old I can tell you that makes her a VERY young woman.

A woman VP would be a nice consolation prize, I guess. I've already overcome my election depression this year from when Hillary lost the nomination. I felt a little tinge again when she spoke the other night though.

Dan Quayle has more "gravitas" than this pick! How is THAT possible?! This is such a carnival stunt, it's sickening. And there's still that little matter about her trying to use her position to have her sister's ex husband fired from his job. Now, it sounds like he probably deserved to get fired, but, a sitting governor (even of a backwater like AK) shouldn't be getting in the middle of her family's squabbles.

I think McCain has handed the election to the dems on a silver platter. And of course, Dubya didn't help his prospects, either.

Governor Sarah Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president.  She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has seen approval ratings of over 80 percent.

•         She has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources.

•         She leads a state that matters to every one of us -- Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

•         She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending.  And she put a stop to the bridge to nowhere that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

•         In Alaska, she challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill.

•         As the head of Alaska's National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington.  In choosing Governor Sarah Palin, John McCain put Washington on notice that he is serious about shaking up the status quo.  What we're seeing is a maverick who has shaken up Washington picking as his teammate a maverick governor who has shaken up her own state.  What it's going to take to change Washington is a team of Mavericks who have a record of accomplishment in shaking up the status quo.

Don't forget, she's a lifetime member of the NRA. Freezer full of wild game.

Husband is an oil fields worker, fishing boat captain, presumably they lived on his earnings while she was home raising their family. Guess that takes care of the "connection to the working people".

No mention of NASCAR yet.

What's not to like?

Besides, President of the US is an OJT kind of job, anyway.

I think McCain's pick is clearly pandering. He needs a gimmick to give him a "bounce" after the Dems' convention. - and to fire up interest in the R's upcoming convention.Problem is, she'll have to debate against Biden, who will have her for lunch. And, then there's the little matter of an investigation into her firing a public safety commissioner for allegedly failing to do her bidding in firing her sister's ex-husband. Nattering nabobs not withstanding.

ARE YOU KIDDING??? Have you seen the way she takes over the podium? This lady is not only a BABE she has what it takes to be a great executive. If you really want to see what the democrats have, as far as women, go to google then click images and search ugly women. Typical democrat women.

Take the Veep position seriously, you say.  Is this about as serious as the Dems are selecting Obama?  I mean, this woman has more experience Governing than either Osama bar-den, individually or combined.

You are right ed! Senators debate and pass laws. People in leadership positions (Mayor/Governor) make things happen!

In the off chance that Obama doesn't win, I just hope that McCain remains relatively healthy.
And if he does win, I'm sure the sudden outpouring of new bipartisanship in Congress will limit the need for Sarah to break any ties.

I was making a little chart for myself comparing the two VP candidates. Does anyone know how many times Ms. Palin has been caught plagiarizing? I got Biden down for 2.
