where have all the good mechanics gone?

Without knowing too many good ole boys who still work on vehicles, I was forced to take one of my motorcycles in for sevice and repair before Memorial Day.  Not heeding my deal wife's advice about the place I took it  ( HOTSHOT Cycless on Murray Ave.) I was told it was simply bad needles and floats.  No big I thought, just do a complete rebuild on all four carbs and she'll run like a swiss watch.  Well, about 3-4 weeks pass and I still don't have the bike back or a timeline for it.  After harassing the guy for days on end, I went there to retrieve my bike and they saids 'it's finished  and ready". I paid the schmucks $280.00 FOR THE WORK and went to get the bike. Finding the main airbox cut in HALF and in a box of "left-over" parts, I asked what that was about.  I was informed that was the only way they could get the carbs out........ So riding it the 2 miles home, it reeked of fuel and leaked about a quart of gas down my pantleg. I turned back and returned it to the shop and said fix the damn thing right guys.

Another few weeks passed, with excuse upon excuse of why it didn't run right ( "um, you need new air cleaners and air box"  was one excuse, we are short-handed was another, um we're taking lunch was the most popular) and again I took it home for another failed run at riding.  After trucking the bike back ( it wouldn't run for more than 10 seconds)  and a few more weeks delay, I went there this Saturday and he said my carbs were shot ( after rebuilding them and charging me nearly $300 for it and saying she was ready to go, not once but TWICE.....) and I need NEW ones for a few hundred more, plus labor.   So more than three month's have passed, with my bike now running worse than when I took it to the shop, with scratches and two tanks of fuel drained out of the bike and a butchered autopsy done to remove a set of carbs I have to ask ..........is every mechanic just as frakking stupid?   Or is HOTSHOT cycle the sham and inept store they are accused of in prior theft issues with stolen property?????

I still need the repair work done to the bike, and have lost most of the prime summer riding ( thankfully I had plan "B")  Can anyone recommend a GOOD bike mechanic?  Anderson Powersports won't do it, only  new work on new stuff.

And should I sue these jokers for damage and lost money? Sounds like tossing good money after bad.

Opinions?

Sounds like they're theft issue is stealing parts out of bikes brought in for work. Wish I knew how best to resolve your problem but it sounds like something needs to be done. Talk to the folks at Motorcycle Technologies or Fraileys, they are both reputable. If they can't fix you up they will send you and your bike to someone who can.

Wyatt;  some years  ago I learned a lesson about some "good old boy" garages. For my car repairs I go to the dealer.  They usually have mechanics that know what they are doing.  AS for suing;  you can, but even if you win, what will you recover?  I expect that operation is on their way out.

Unfortunately there are no real mechanics here. the two main shops both shun work unless warrantee, and the remainder are like the one I went to ( Hotshots turned into such a disappointment after ANGEL warned me not to trust them...)  and now I'm gunshy about another fly by night shop.

I miss the days when you could find a good mechanic around town.

Take them to court if nothing else you might win and have them paying for the repairs that should have been done to begin with. As well as replacing the parts they broke.

Motorcycle Technologies is 224-7616

Fraileys is 231-7143, they are more of a painting/customizing place but they can probably recommend someone.

Also Ancient Iron 964-0583 has a very good reputation. My father has been building motorcycles and working on them since before I was born and he trusts them with work he can't do for some reason or doesn't feel like fooling with.

Okay, L.C.'s is located on 29 south and their phone number is 225-1341. Everyone I have talked to says that they are very good at what they do, the other people mentioned above deal in Harleys and custom bikes. Really good guys but not really what you are looking for; I think.

Or another thought, Hooters has that giant bike night Thursday nights, you could always swing by and ask some of the people who they use.

I don't think Hooters can help Wyatt much, Blogger ... although I'll have to admit I've seen some really, really nice carburetors there. Certainly gets my motor runnin' so I can head out on the highway looking for adventure. Laughing

Okay, I'll stop now and see who finishes that thought.

I wasn't suggesting he ask the staff JD, although I realize being the dedicated reporter that you are they would be your first resource to speak to. In all seriousness it's my understanding 100's of people go there on Thursdays for bike night and mill outside talking. Among them will be people who know who the better mechanics are for what bike and who isn't.

Carberators? Is that what those things are called? I always thought they repaired headlights there.

Thought you might like to see a Hooter Calendar

Great that this has been an informative and funny topic with no abuse.   But I don't think JD meant the kind of hooters in Ed's calendar, if he WAS BORN TO BE WILD.  Or the calendar hasn't aged well since 2003..

Surely appreciate ALL the replies gang, especially the one's which I can actually use the info :)

Correct assumption on the rice-rocket, those harley shops would laugh me out of town on a iron rail once they saw my tokyo terror pull in. Thanks again all

Your bike was made in Japan, Wyatt? Well, there's your problem. The guys in the local shop can't read the instruction manual.

I think these dumbsh*ts working in HOTSHOTS  are on work release anyways.

When a mechanic works on your stuff for nearly three months, tells you twice your vehicle is perfectly READY and you drive a grand total of 2 miles before catastrophic break down occurs, so they can say the work they did didn't work and you need to go to a real mechanic........English is the least of their issues
