Georgia really doesn't have much in terms of interest for the US. Like it was said above, Turkey is sufficient enough for anything the US would want to do in that area. Though, I completely disagree that Iran should be invaded at all!

Prevail:

I assume you are taking about the mythological book The Bible? Though, I would have to applause that you actually know how to read a book! Way past all my expectations that I've had for you. Though, if anyone in that area deserves to be invaded, it would be Israel.

Our ally Turkey was not so reliable when the US wanted to stage troops through there to go after Saddam.

On the other hand, Bobloblaw, if anyone attacks Israel, I'd personally cheer when the United States and Israel combined forces to turn the desert stands of whatever miserable excuse for a nation made that ill-advised decision into a glowing mass of molten glass.

You're right about Turkey, Ed. If those Turks had allowed us to launch the planned operation from the north, instead of leaving several thousand Marines stranded on carriers in the Black Sea, a lot of the violence and looting in the northern areas of Iraq, like Mosul, could have been avoided.

Which brings up an old question: If Turkey attacked Iraq from the rear, would Greece help?

(If that one goes over everybody's head, good. If not, yeah, I thought it was funny too.) Laughing

Georgia gives military access to the Middle East without Turkey being flaky and w/o stationing aircraft on the ground in a combat zone. The Georgians WERE more likely to allow us to host military troops for regional operations than the Turks but I doubt it now. Even though we have 300 or so military trainers in Georgia, they've been pulled back and cannot help. Now let me spell it out for you why Georgia is of strategic importance. When you conduct air operations, multiple egress routs are needed to ensure the safety of your pilots should something go wrong and bases that are already prepared to repair / rearm / refuel are a big plus to operation readiness. Multiple routes stretch the enemy out and force them to cover more of an area with fewer resources, rather than being able to concentrate their forces. Not to mention Georgia is also a good place to stage your S&R (search and rescue) personal to reduce the distances they would have to travel should a pilot have to bail out. Now you're thinking "We'll just stage all the in Turkey." Wrong, NATO nation or not, Turkey is not going to let us use their soil for a possible strike against Iran. NATO nation or not, the buggers still wear towels on their heads and follow the teachings of a child molester, just like the Iranians. When 99.8% of Turks are muslim, and 9.8% or those in Georgia are muslim and we're planning ops against a muslim country, you tell me who the better ally will be, but I think it's pretty obvious who it is...

Oh yea, not to mention another logistics route. The more the merrier...

JD, I think there are some things that a Greek wouldn't even "do".....

Where is a Charlie Wilson when you need one? Wink (the one in the movie!) Was that during a Republican administration or a Democratic administration?

How did you know I barely passed geography? Embarassed I appreciate the maps Jane and ZN. Seems like you two can be very valuable contributors when you want to be.

Oh yea, lets not forget about the role Georgia plays in reducing the proliferation of stolen Russian nuclear material to the middle east...They've stopped a lot more of it than our government or the media reports...

Bush is at least taking the 1st step and giving aid to the people of Georgia, we'll see if is the Russians have the cohonies to stop us.

I don't think we should get involved at all without a binding resolution from Congress. Otherwise, in this election season, regardless of what Bush does the Democrats in that Congress will wind up second-guessing the Commander in Chief for political gain and, as a result, put our troops at risk.

We've played that game for so long that, right now, the U.S. is paralyzed when it comes to any strong responses to the Soviets. I do hope everybody's happy about that, but I'm not.

A Congressional vote would mean calling Congress back for a special emergency session for the first time since 1948. (Actually since the Senate hasn't even adjourned because they're playing a silly little game with the President's Constitutional authority to make recess appointments, it wouldn't even require a Presidential order. Just tell them to do their jobs, since they're supposedly in session anyway.)

And since all of them would already be in town (even The Messiah would be expected to turn out for a vote like this), they can go ahead and vote on driling in ANWR and offshore. Wink

Georgia is an independent country with a democratically elected government. Russia has invaded Georgia. The U.N. is doing nothing but pontificating.
