Even though this forum is thankfully dead, I just wanted to start a thread on the Republican sleepover in the halls of Congress.

During the entire Bush Administration, there have only been 2 occasions that Republicans felt were important enough to call for Congress to return from vacation:

  • Attempting to legislate the medical process of Terry Schiavo
  • Demanding that we give away more of our coast to their oil company buddies

During this same period, the United States was subjected to multiple heinous acts of terrorism both here and abroad, entered into war in Iraq and Afghanistan, had our homeland devastated by the most destructive hurricane in modern times, poisoned pet food from China, lead-contaminated toys from China, the 3rd largest bank collapse in US History, record foreclosures, and multi-billion dollar losses for the nation's biggest mortgage firms.

Andrew, If you are puzzled, I am dismayed. I have to say that the Democratic Members of Congress have some of the blame. Why is there no action on their part? Are we going to let the guilty parties just slip out of town? I am sure there is more to come and this will not be a peaceful election process. Are we going to just sit back and beg for four more years? What a sad State/state we all are in. This is not about power and prestige went down the toilet several years ago.

I don't have an answer but surely there are wiser individuals out there. To the politicians I ask, just do the job that you were sent there to do and bring the respect and power due America back. Anderson County may already be lost.

Thank goodness we have a conscientious Mayor and good things are being accomplished. Boy am I glad that I live in the City, dual taxes and all.

Note to Pappy on his return. If you were unhappy with your water bill before this, our severe drought status is going to make it even worse.

You think maybe even God is unhappy with us? Going to Church on Sunday or even every time the doors open douth not a Christian make. A good dose of the "Golden Rule" might be called for here.

Andrew, I would think that for all the bad things you list, you should be more angry that the Democrats did not feel they had to have a sleep over to get this done.

I agree on the Schiavo thing. They should have stayed out of it.

But Drilling our own oil in the near future is essential, or this county is screwed...........

There is NO quick fix. The goverment, dems and republicans, have sat on this problem and done NOTHING too long. The auto industry as not really until recent years made any real effort to find an alternative to GAS. Hybrids, a token fix. You still need gas. Electric cars, maybe, but they won't let us build more nuclear power plants, coal is abondant but not the best solution.

So young andrew.....what would the all knowing Hammy do???

Our own government says that "drilling here, now" won't have any effect on the price of gasoline until the year 2030 and it will only impact it by 1% or so.

If you want a suggestion from me on what you can do now, get your tires properly inflated. That is good for 3% energy savings.  In other words, 3 times the benefit of drilling here, now, and we get the benefit right now!

If you just got your nails done, gimme a call and I'll be happy to check your tires for you.  You have my number.

Andrew Hammett/Barack Obama's comprehensive national energy plan: "Inflate your tires."

JDTippett's comprehensive national healthcare plan: "An apple a day." (with a nod to Ann Coulter)

Barack Obama's response to Russian invasion of Georgia: "Both of you knock it off ... no wait, Russia, you knock it off ... no, wait, Georgia, YOU knock it off .... No, wa- ... Just ... Awwww, just don't mess with Atlanta, okay?"

Simple solutions to complex issues. Don't you just love 'em? Laughing

Here Anderw choke on this

Who says experience means nothing?

The Presidential election was too close to call. Neither the Republican candidate nor the Democratic candidate had enough votes to win.. There was much talk about ballot recounting, court challenges, etc., but a week-long ice fishing competition seemed the sportsmanlike way to settle things. The candidate who caught the most fish at the end of the week would win the election.

After much back and forth discussion, it was decided that the contest would take place on a remote frozen lake in northern Minnesota. There were to be no observers present, and both men were to be sent out separately on this isolated lake and return at 5 P.M. with their catch for counting and verification by a team of neutral parties.

At the end of the first day, John Mc. returned to the starting line and he had ten fish. Soon, Obama returned and had no fish. Well, everyone assumed he was just having another 'bad hair' day or something and hopefully, he would catch up the next day.

At the end of the 2nd day John Mc. came in with 20 fish and Obama came in again with none.

That evening, Harry Reid got together secretly with Obama and said, 'Obama, I think John Mc. is a low-life, cheatin' son-of-a-bitch. I want you to go out tomorrow and don't even bother with fishing. Just spy on him and see just how he is cheating.'

The next night (after John Mc. returns with 50 fish), Harry said to Obama, 'Well, tell me how is John Mc. cheating?' Obama replied, 'Harry, you're not going to believe this, but he's cutting holes in the ice.'

"Our own government says that "drilling here, now" won't have any effect on the price of gasoline until the year 2030 and it will only impact it by 1% or so."

The government states it will take ten years, and the oil companies state oil will be flowing within one year and max capacity will be reached in 3-5 years, and 1% is a vast understatement.
Now, would you let an accountant repair your car? Then why listen to a bureaucrat about how long it will take to drill for oil? Now hammett, why would you listen to the government when it comes to how long it will take to drill for oil rather than listening to the oil companies who actually drill for oil for a living? Oh yea, becasue the false facts about oil put froward by the Democraps support your biased position on the energy and "filthy oil" issue....At least the Republipukes are trying to do something rather than
running away from the issues to sell their flop of a book.....

Again Andrew, children should be seen and not heard.....Come back when you have a clue.

I guess Obama and Andrew thinks we all ride around on flat tires.  I get my vehicles serviced regularly.  Tires checked for tire pressure, balanced and rotated.  By driving carefully I get Window sticker or better than window EPA mileage.  If I start doing the HammBama experiment with my tires, they'll wear out sooner, and/or effect the control I have while on the road.

If anyone wants to seriously reduce the gas used, REDUCE THE NATIONAL SPEED LIMIT TO 55MPH.

And drill while improving solar, wind, hydrogen and battery technology.

You know, it is a serious responsibility solving all our problems and I do not take it lightly.  Smile

Oh, and Andrew, what is Obama's position on anything today?

Can anyone please explain why the liberals do not want the USA to drill for oil.  How is the Pelosi-Reid crowd benefiting from it?  Their pockets are being lined by someone to keep us from drilling, who?

I don't speak for all liberals, but this is why I do not support this plan. It isn't going to help. We just aren't oil laden enough to bother. I give you the report of the Energy Information Administration of the U.S. Government.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/otheranalysis/ongr.html

You see ending the federal ban on offshore drilling would probably add only another 8 billion barrels, one fifth of what was opened for drilling offshore two years ago with the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act. Yes, prevail, we already drill in the most oil rich portion now.

Also you are assuming that we as a nation get that oil, as if we owned it. No one is proposing nationalizing the oil companies. Whatever oil they did find would be sold on the world market.

Like every other issue, this one is so much more complicated than people realize. The only reason that I might think it could work is that it could pump up those Mercantile Exchange folks and affect the futures speculation. I might go along with it a bit if that was the case, but in 2006 when much more shoreline was opened, there was little to no affect. See here:

Duh Prevail! The answer about why liberals oppose drilling is as obvious as the nose on your face. "Liberals" by their nature are put here in this earth to annoy "Conservatives" like yourself. And speaking of annoying, it's about time for Rush Limbaugh and the EIB on WAIM. Enjoy today's program, but remember: like the Rick Driver show, listening to Rush destroys brain cells. Ta Ta For Now.

Really, the "gas crisis" is finally moving the US in the right direction:

- we're driving significantly fewer miles

- we're aggressively pursuing alternative energy generation technologies

- we're buying smaller cars in droves

- we're finally turning off lights, computers, and TVs when we leave the room

- we're developing alternative lighting technologies

What's not to like?

...and, most of you got a nice, shiny, $600 check from Uncle Sam earlier this year. Consider it a 25% discount on all your gas for the rest of the year.

We still need oil for some things, like lubrication. Cars don't run on Astroglide!

'course, if you're going to do some nighttime "offshore" drilling....y'know what I mean (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), then Astroglide is just the ticket.Kiss

Huzzah Huzzah to Stringcheese for my favorite post of the week. It references both the great things about higher gas prices and the word Astroglide. Nicely played.

I am not a liberal Democrat but will someone please explain to me all this hullabaloo about offshore drilling for oil here in America. From what this "mushroom" has been able to determine there are many oil leases already in place. Have these sites all been "explored" and found not to be viable, or economically too expensive for amount of oil that could be obtained?
What about more refineries being built to process the oil available. I remember at the start of all this that one refinery had to shut down for several months for maintenance issues.

While I am not for drilling in any serious environmentally endangered places, I can see us trying to become more independent in oil production. Of course public transportation and alternate energy sources must be explored and put into use as Europe has done. Why is everyone so against nuclear energy. We here have lived in the "danger zone" of a nuclear energy plant for more years than I can recall. Europe has them everywhere.

I'm just asking and would like to see some intelligent, non threatening discussion both pro and con.

I received this from Sen. Jim DeMint this morning.

"Will you join Senator Jim DeMint and Representative Jeb Hensarling and commit to protecting October 1, 2008 as American Energy Freedom Day?

On October 1, America will celebrate Energy Freedom Day when the bans on offshore drilling and oil shale recovery will end. Right off our shores there are reserves estimated to hold over 18 billion barrels of oil and 55 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. And in America’s West, oil shale is estimated to between 800 billion and 2 trillion barrels of oil — more than three times the proven oil reserves in Saudi Arabia.

Tapping these sources of American energy are desperately needed to lower gas prices AND reduce our dependence on foreign oil. But for over 20 years, Democrats have blocked access to this American energy.

And even now, at the height of an energy crisis that have sent gas prices sky-high, Democrats in Congress plan to extend the ban on American energy production.

Democrats will try to sneak a new extension of the ban into a must-pass government spending bill before the end of September. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are so beholden to extreme environmentalists that they would rather force a government shutdown than help lower the cost of gas and home energy for struggling American families.

Senator DeMint and Representative Hensarling are committed to protecting American Energy Freedom Day. They have launched a new website at www.energyfreedomday.com to spread the word, but they need your help in these four important tasks:

We really are rather oil rich off shore. Can anyone recall when the last oil spill from an off shore drilling rig happened? Even during the last hurricane season, the rigs were damaged but I don't recall any huge oil spills.

From what has been put out there on oil studies the Virginia and Carolina's coastline have significant deposits.

Of course alternative energies need to be fully explored as well. I wish we had incentive programs for solar powering your homes. With the drought, we wouldn't need hydro-electric if we all had solar power.

Hey, here's an idea. To solve the energy crisis, we can inflate our tires AND, since we're in a severe drought at the moment, we can all rely on DRY CELLS for power in our homes. After all, we have plenty of air and dry. Wink Wink

I need to be careful here. Some dumba** Democrat in Congress is going to take me seriously and try to slip that suggestion into their next "comprehensive" energy plan. Laughing

Don't joke, JD.  They will take it at face value and run with it.  AFTER a multi million dollar study and several high paid consultants!
