Better than offshore drilling

In the latest copy of Time magazine:

How out of touch is Barack Obama? He's so out of touch that he suggested that if all Americans inflated their tires properly and took their cars for regular tune-ups, they could save as much oil as new offshore drilling would produce. Gleeful Republicans have made this their daily talking point; Rush Limbaugh is having a field day; and the Republican National Committee is sending tire gauges labeled "Barack Obama's Energy Plan" to Washington reporters.

But who's really out of touch? The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. In other words: Obama is right.

Read the rest of it here.

So if all the good 'ole boys in Anderson would go visit their mamas every 3 months and make sure her tires are properly inflated and change her oil, we'd be having a bigger impact than offshore drilling.

Andrew, the good 'ole boys in Anderson County don't give a rip about how much gas their guzzlers use since the taxpayers are paying for every dime of it.  Most of the good 'ole boys, and girls, will lose their cars in a few months when a sane council is seated.  The savings we will realize from that may get us out of the red in Anderson.

Hussein Obama wants to use the country's reserve oil to lower prices.  How stupid can he get?

Hammett, if you actually buy Obama's crap (especially his energy policy), I have a 2008 Suburban hybrid that gets 50mpg to sell you.....One day when you have 2 car payments a mortgage, insurance payments a wife and kids you'll realize that everything the Democraps have been feeding you is total bullshit. As for now we'll let it slide due to youthful ignorance, idealism, inexperience and stupidity.

If BO were so much into going green he would first suggest that waste of fossil fuels simply for comfort were a crime. We know that is not going to happen anymore than Gore will give up all of his comforts. If all of these people that love the enviromet so much that they want all of us regular Joes to give up our comfort, why haven't they taken the first step to going totally green why do they still fly in private jets drive the great big or very fast cars and why is it there houses have not been made to not use any fossil fuels. If it is such a "crime" to use fossil fuels why are they not following there own advice.

Oh yeah one other thing if BO really believed so much in not drilling off shore why is he now considering drilling if it included all of the options that he has already voted against. the same ones that JMc has been asking for when gas was still down around $3.50 a gal when he realized that we had to do some things that would change the perception of this world about our own ability to take care of our own needs.

Can I quote that  "Sane Council"  remark?  Because I am sure once the "Sane Council" gets in place, has a $2Million-PLUS audit bill shoved in it's face, a lowered valuation revenue stream and reduced income to the County to deal with, and disgruntled & pizzed-off citizens demanding how that audit will be paid ( all without raising taxes or cutting services or jobs to quote the election lingo taglines...), all the while promising to increase revenues, control new spending and curb future freewheeling among its house, react to belated or way-layed issues and encourage new business & promote the newly-found cooperation within it's ranks and the County Administrator et al while kissing MCW's @ss to avoid county/state/federal lawsuits against them.

I am eagerly anticipating the hairpulling, finger-pointing, name calling and anguishing which is destined to happen.  Merry Christmas Insanity Clause.

Yeah, Wyatt, but our four-wheel drive monster trucks suck up gasoline like guests at a Lindsay Lohan birthday party soak up alcohol. It's not easy driving in mud, you know.

Let's see if I understand Andrew. We should tap the national oil reserve to bring the cost of gas down (artificially) for a very short term savings then have to buy oil back at a higher price to insure we have the proper reserve in the event of an actual emergency? What an odd idea. This is a simply supply and demand issue and in fact it's working, as the price has risen, people have used less and slowly the market is moving towards a new equilibrium.

I would think the left wing would be deliriously happy over the reduction in domestic demand that has resulted from those artificially high prices. I mean, it seems that our "carbon footprint" has lost part of a toe lately.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is in place to address problems of supply shortages and spikes in demand, particularly in times of war - it is NOT there for using to influence retail prices.

At present, there is no shortage of supply, and demand is actually going down. Neither of the two circumstances that would trigger the use of that SPR is in place. Leave it alone and let the market correct itself in due time.

Using the Srategic Reserves for bozo's driving SUV's is ludicris insanity at it's finest!  The SOR is made for fueling the military fleets of planes and vehicles which PROTECT your @ss, not for your personal enjoyment to drive to Hilton Head for 18 holes.

A better alternative to insure an adequate future fossil fuel supply is to TAX the $%@#  out of any driver or owner or a private vehicle which gets under 20MPG or weighs over 4000lbs gross.

that way, you get those brain-dead drivers who are putting to the 7-11 to buy slurpies for their brats off the roads ( and reducing wear & tear on our 100-year paving budget too) and forcing them to buy frugal cars for those jaunts. And I don't wanna hear from those nutjobs who say they're "safer" in a SUV.  Drive slower and you're safe, douchebag!

Funny thing is, I was watching the Larry King special last night with T. Boone Pickens.  His "plan" to derive wind energy for the USA by 20% needs is actually a great idea.  Time for a WPA project for this country, building things like water conservation & energy generation plants ( to harness the annual flooding of the plains' states) so we cat cut the strings tying us to the terrorists.

Wyatt,

While the Pickens Plan is interesting, it does not meet all of our energy needs. I'm thinking something more along the lines of . . .

Affordable Solar (e.g., get rid of the stupid subsidizing of sugar and put it to solar) for residential + Submarine Batteries (friendly for the house, environment, etc) + the continued on-boarding of electric cars = less pull on the power grid, thus resulting in a reduction of traditional consumption.

Why sub batteries? Ever looked into the capacity of one of those?

Here is whats going to happen if we tap the SPR.

1. Gas will get a short term reduction in price, until the feds start buying oil again to replace what was tapped, then oil begins to rise again.
2. As soon as we use what we tapped an begin to buy again to refill the SPL, on top of what we use already on a daily basis, Iran will do something stupid like mine the Persian Gulf to be a even larger thorn in our side and to jack up oil prices. This will skyrocket prices even worse becasue now we have our normal use of oil as well as the fed buying oil to place back into the SPL for fear of a regional conflict, the speculators will go nuts, then we're going to have to clear the shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf to restore the flow of oil as oil hits $300+ a bbl and $8/gal.

If Obama were any dumber he's have to hire someone to follow him around and remind him to breathe.

Why not just pass the bill to do all of the above, wind, solar, shale to oil, drilling. Biofuels are just another dodge by the congress to make it look like they are doing something, when in fact they are cause food prices to rise at a faster pace than just the rise in fuel prices. Doing all of the above is the only way to insure that we get thru this crisis while still working on viable resouces that will reduce the need for oil, they will never do away with the need for oil. Way too many things are made from oil everything from trash cans to bras.
As for Wyatts plan lets just fine every individual that cannot afford to buy a new car that gets great milage, lets really hurt those less fortunate than some. Aren't those the same people that the left wants to care for.

Solar power needs Net Metering Laws to be more practical. Write to your State Reps, they vote on it shortly.
