Prior to Mr. Preston's departure, we discussed several times the large animal intake facility. I do not know if he was able to secure an additional two acres as the last several months of his service were quite tumultuous. My husband and I did draw up a small and affordable facility for the large animals the county also cares for as well as some information on costs of rehabilitation of horses.

One thought we did discuss and I hope those in charge of the new shelter consider is the possibility of having a small petting zoo area where we can show case some of the local agricultural animals as well as some of the exotic ones we might be able to have loaned out. This idea has worked well for other shelters to draw families to the facility in a friendly environment and help promote more adoptions. With the economy in the recession we now have, adding an attraction like this will give families a place to take their children on weekends for a free and informative experience.

With 10 acres and 3.2 million dollars a small park like facility with some picnic tables would be a lovely addition. The new shelter is needed. We hope that the committee takes into consideration making this shelter more than just a place to house or spay/neuter abandoned animals.

We are looking forward to 2009 and all the improvements and positive changes we hope to experience in the coming year.

Oh Nicole, Nicole, Nicole....don't you realize that no matter how much sense it makes or how much good it will do the idea of a progressive animal shelter will never work...I can hear the radio callers now!

Dear Blogger,

The wheels of change move slowly sometimes but if there is a benefit for the county and the shelter animals who knows? The idea is not new and actually I based my pitch for this smaller version on the Humane Society Lollypop Farms http://www.lollypop.org/.

Look at all that could be accomplished with our new shelter. I am sure Mr. Preston passed the ideas to Greg Smith and Michelle Dodd. If they go for even half of it, the credit is all theirs. Ideas are easy, implementation is the hard part. <BIG GRIN> An possible benefit could be to for the Anderson Humane Society if they take a large part in the implementation of the programs with the use of the new facility. These might help fund the spay neuter clinic if the County agrees.

With obedience classes, educational programs, local dog shows, small field trials, etc... the shelter might recover some of their costs. Take a peek at the programs, events, and education classes. There are some great ideas!

By the way, every year Clemson hosts and Adoption Day that many private and public shelters go to, to find good homes for cats and dogs. Last year, PEARL attended with a litter of kittens as the only horse rescue. It was cute and fun. Many dogs and cats found homes. Maybe Wyatt and Angle would like to participate this coming year. If so, I can put them in touch with the girl who organizes the project, she adopted one of my kittens.

Anderson Sheriff's Office has done a great job with the large animals issues. Read the nightmare this case is turning into and how long the process is taking.

The Colie Martin Case is an even worse mess and has gone on for over five years.

Ever the optimists my 2009 song, enjoy! Nicole

Nicole please don't get me wrong I think it is a great idea. I just am frustrated that like many ideas before it, it will be beat down by people who don't want "their tax dollars" paying for it. Personally I would be happy to see my tax dollars going towards the project. Now if you'll excuse me I have to duck while people fling...um mud at me.

3,2 million of their tax payers money WILL be spent. The question is how. I have seen the building. It can accommodate more than they plan. It can also provide more services that will pay for themselves such as obedience classes, small shows. It can be done the question is what it the vision of those making decissions? Many have suggested that there be a formal committee to discuss these matters and make recomendations to the Council for changes. We will see how that is received. You can't ever guess what will happen unless you write the final script here. LOL

I fully understand your concerns. The new shelter was part of the ten million dollar bond. It will be built. The current shelter is too small for the number of animals that it houses, like our jail. <grin>. I understand the contract has all ready been awarded.

My hope is that they use this facility and offer programs and events that will help fund the facility and bring more people in to adopt.

No offense taken Blogger.

Happy New Year!

We have a white QH (quarter horse) reported missing. He is a 24 years old gelding so age is a definite consideration. This gelding was reported missing in the Iva area.

In Belton we have a white mare in questionable health found in the pasture of a horse owner. She was apparently abandoned on this farm. She is in the age range of ten to twelve years old. She is a possible neglect case.

Anyone with any information that can help find the horse or the owner will be greatly appreciated. As we get better details we will post the information here as well as the media.

Pickens County has reported an increase in the number of surrendered & abandoned horses. Oconee is currently working a case involving a herd of pregnant mares in questionable condition.

Happy New Year,

A sad commentary on economic times.  The growing numbers of abandoned animals of all forms, big and small, is disheartening.  Nationwide, animals left in foreclosed homes or dumped on roadways or left in someone's field.  I know of many dogs, cats and small calibre animals whom are once-loved but now abandoned due to hard choices of feeding your human families or feeding your "adopted" ones. While it is hard on everyone, it is especially harder on elderly and fixed income individuals whom have to choose between medications or dog food. It is hard on those that do rescue work, because we already have those on the unwanted list and try to provide them with a more suitable life than selecting death for them. Please try to help those whom you know are having a difficult time caring for their pets.  Some will simply not admit they need help, yet the animal shows distress of malnutrition. I said this almost ten years ago, till someone stole this as their tag-line; to help speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. Buy a bale of hay, or a bag of food, or offer any assistance you can. Those animals will appreciate your efforts, and love you for loving them first.

Absolutely Wyatt. The foreclosures have increased the number of cats and dogs being abandoned and the economy has affected many to the point they are having to choose between their pets or their families.

PEARL has received calls asking for help finding homes for a few dogs, last month is was two AKC registered spaniels. We have also helped with a few cats. Two years ago we had hay and a full blooded Basset Hound donated! Fortunately Michelle Dodd had someone who had been looking for a Basset and he did not go through the shelter. PEARL has been keeping a list of people looking for horses and we help match them up with owners no longer able to afford their horses. People are giving horses away when they can and when they can't they abandon them.

The problem has always existed as you well know but the increase in cases all around us is nearly overwhelming many counties.

Its terribly sad when that choice has to be made.  Even us, having such weak knees and caring hearts for animals; have to choose between offering expensive medical care in hopes of extending a life for a bit longer, or chosing to end the life of an animal because of expensive blood tests, medications and visits. We've HAD to do that, and the agony is almost unbearable.  Having to chose food over a home is even tougher, because there is no other reason to leave behind a dog/cat except human life over sub-human. We know of elderly forced to do just that, and those pets may be the ONLY friend they have left.

Having a horse is even MORE expensive, and having owned horses I know the costs skyrocket yearly with vet care, farriers, special oats, insecticide, saddlry and wormer meds. Luckily PEARL can assist in this local area.  Some folks just aint that lucky.

On that subject, free Quarter Horse gelding to good home. This horse requires a seasoned horseman because he has some bad habits he needs to be trained out of. The horse will kick, has nipped and approaches with his ears back. His owner died and the care taker cannot keep him as he is pasture aggressive. It has been suggested he be paddocked alone until he can be socialized properly. He has been ridden Western. The gelding is 7 years old, is nicely put together, and he is a bay. He stands for the farrier. Once the horse is under saddle, he rides nicely. Expirienced rider only. Please contact PEARL at 287-9939 and we will give you the contact unformation. The care taker will want a vet and farrier reference.

After failing to adhere to the Oconee County Animal Control's requirement to get care and feed for a herd of horses we were advised that Oconee seized the majority of the herd yesterday, if not the entire herd. There were 20 +/- horses.

PEARL is fortunate that we have such dedicated volunteers. They had previously made four trips to the location verifying that the ACO's orders were not being followed and reporting back to another national rescue organization, PETA. PETA made the first contact with the county and PEARL followed with a formal written complaint once we knew the condition of some of the herd.

It will be interesting to see what happens. Generally you would only want to seize the horses that are injured or at very low body weight. This method accomplishes several goals; allows for the owner to realize the county is serious, gets the horses in immediate need of veterinarian care and proper feed and, does not over tax your rescue or foster homes. From the looks of the mares, many appeared to be bred.

Our thanks to the volunteers. The hardest thing to do is get the documentation, walk away and, allow the system to work. We all felt so much better after we received notification that the problem had definitively been addressed.

Correction - only half the herd was taken so Oconee did it right. This makes us feel much better and shows Oconee took the appropriate action.

Winter is here. Adding some loose trace minerals to feed will encourage horses to drink water. Remember to break the ice on water troughs.

Outside dogs need a dry place to get out of the cold and dry bedding like straw or wood shavings. Same for the cats but they seem to find their own places that owners and neighbors sometimes do not expect.

As this is the Animal category, I want to say something.  While I am a huge animal lover and usually commend ANY groups which help the animals, this specific group is doing more harm to both the animals and the public for their practices.  I have bitten my tongue for as long as I could, waiting for them to straighten out their practices but see this is only escalating.
There is a local animal rescue group, which claims to be a no-kill and 501-c(3) organization. This group is neither.  It is in the BUSINESS of selling animals for profit, and unhealthy, unshot/unspayed and uncertified healthy animals to boot.  Recently this group sold a litter of PARVO dogs to the public. While denying they were responsible, they are the ONLY group selling animals out of the local major-chain pet shop.  This is not the first incident, but the only one to make the news. The group has also sold dogs which were deemed vicious and "biters" to the unknowing public, and there was injuries related to these sales. I know of one woman injured by a dog bite from a vicious pit, and another attacked by a cat whom clearly wasn't user friendly.
It is important to have people whom work for groups, even volunteers, know what they are dealing with and passing on to the public.  Providing the unsuspecting public with sick or dying dogs only sets them up for heartache, disease and exposure to healthy animals already in their homes. I find this deceitful practice harmful and would invite the public to closely scrutinize the facts presented.  It is paramount to ask for proof of vaccinations on that specific animal, as well as spay/neuter and rabies certificates. Not to be duped into paying for it NOW and find out the animal is already sick or exposed to illnesses which can endanger the family or other pets.
This group, while having well-intentioned and caring volunteers, is being run as a money-maker dealing with selling purely for profit and not for the greater good of the public and the animals concerned.  Many times, when these animals are not sold quickly enough, they are simply returned to the shelter and euthanized, and exchanged for another animal.  Solicitations are always being sought for food, sheltering or services, yet these animals are being sold for 3-4 times their cost to obtain.  Some of these dogs were obtained for less than $40.00 and sold for over $200.00 with no health checks or shots.
The primary goal of a non-profit animal rescue should be to find homes for animals, not clearing enough money to buy new vans, cars or fishing trips to the coast.
This group has been in "business" for a few years, but still is not registered with the Federal government (http://www.irs.gov/charities/index.html ) after several years of doing business in the area and representing themselves as such.  They have misrepresented themselves to both the public and to the corporations assisting them under the assumption they are legit. I have been told I should not name them directly as they are being investigated, so I will not name them. But simple deduction will find it's way into which rescue is involved and then you can research their names in the registry with IRS.  This group is doing a disservice to those groups and individuals whom are sacrificing their lives and time to help, to rescue without cost and even at a loss.  Making money off the flesh of others is shameful, even if it is "only a cat or dog".

I'm sorry Wyatt I am a little slow tonight. I cannot figure who this is you are talking about. I know you cannot name this organization directly. But could you give another hint or PM me? Thank you.

As I said, I cannot divuldge the name because an ongoing investigation, regarding illegally obtaining funding and disbursements under false pretenses is underway, and "we" are not supposed to "know " about it.  Duh, if it involves cats & dogs locally we try to keep up.
But suffice it to say there are only a rare FEW groups in the tri-county area.  One is the ACHS, which seems to also not be listed on the IRS 501-c(3) current list but know they WERE, and that is NOT whom I refer to.  Another is using an address in Townville but does business elsewhere with no contact info available.
Lets just say, read the papers  and BUYER BEWARE!

There are many shelters that accidentally adopt out parvo positive puppies. The Anderson County Shelter has accidentally done so more than a few times. These organizations do not intend on this but it happens.

Until and unless this county has biological barriers, separate buildings and vaccinations this will continue to be a result of trying to save puppies. Feline infectious diseases have also wiped out entire populations of cats at the Anderson County Shelter.

Greenville Animal Shelter and most every shelter have experienced these problems, The real problem is the allowance of irresponsible pet ownership and unvaccinated pets.

What is your EIN and what specific organization do you think are operating under the fraudulent designation as  a 501 C 3?

Number 39 PEARL horse - Corrections!

I was contacted about the article that is in the Anderson Independent today about the latest horse PEARL has assumed the responsibility for rehabilitating at the request of the Sheriff's Office.

I incorrectly stated the mare came from Iva, she was picked up in Belton. We are hoping the owners or someone who knows this horse will come forward and give us an approximate date the mare was bred so we can better attend to her needs and give the mare and foal the best possible chance. Anyone who has information can contact Nancy Traynum directly and remain anonymous at 864-634-4950. The horse is in her care.

The mare was obviously cared for at one time and is well trained. She is easy to work with on the ground and loaded onto a two horse straight load step up trailer like she has done it all her life.

We hope that people will contact PEARL if they know they are having problems and ask what help might be available rather than having to abandon your large animals or have them go without. This winter we have been able to match owners of horses they can no longer care for with people looking for horses. We do not participate in the ownership transfer process but we have had great success finding homes and so far everyone is happy with the outcome.

Stay Warm,
Nicole

Wanted to make a minor point, for all the Yankee haters among uswink
This Saturday afternoon, two PLANE-LOADS of food, blankets and other necessities, will arrive at the Anderson Airport from "up North".  This is not the first or only wonderful act being done by out of state'rs whom have adopted, rescued or donated services like transport or fostering of OUR community's animals.  The plea went out today in the AIM for food, blankets and help at our local shelter.  I would like to see the challenge met by US, instead of those coming from hundreds or thousands of miles away.
This Saturday, come out to the airport with any sort of donations of food, towels, blankets, cleaning supplies or whatever you can give to help.   I understand the need is greatest for puppy food, due to the HUGE amount of puppies currently at the shelter. These abandoned and forgotten creatures came from our yards, our neighborhoods, our irresponsible neighbors. These dogs, cats and even livestock which have been tossed aside during these times of need.  And the one's answering the call do not live, work or stay here.   What does that say about us?
Please make every effort to make the difference in their lives.  And show our local shelter they matter.  Bring what you can and bring as often as you can, even after the planes leave.  And maybe, go adopt one of these guys!  Contact the Anderson County Animal Shelter if you can help, or if you need information about this weekend's event.
