Did the words "large animal facility" fall out of Bill McAbee's mouth accidentally last night? I guess the animal welfare people are beginning to get him to understand that animal is defined as:one of the lower animals as distinguished from human beings b: mammal ; broadly : vertebrate (MW) or in other words, including more than cats and dogs. Can anyone confirm this happened? I would watch the playback to hear that.
Anderson's Animals
JW, I thought the same thing. The people taking their animals to vets don't abandon them. So the wrong people would be supporting the neglected animals.
Here's an off the wall thing I thought of - why not send animals that noone wants to adopt to the state prisons? There is fenced land. Not all prisoners are hardened criminals; they get the nice animals
. For the violent criminals, let them have the mean dogs( they'd have been euthanized anyway). Some of these bad azzes might learn a lesson.
I'm sure prisons have rats or mice, so they need cats.
There's usually a big open area at night(saw Alcatraz) that animals could be brought into when there's bad weather. Anything would be better than the alternative - death.

Not so far-fetched. There are a number of prison dog programs around the country, but none in South Carolina that I'm aware of.
We do have a Thoroughbred rehabilitation facility at the Wateree River Correctional Facility in Rembert, SC, which is sponsored by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. They only work with retired race horses, though.
I have spoken to several of the state Representatives and while they would love to get these programs in our state, there is no state funding available. This funding would either need to be found through the federal government or private foundations. The concept is great and reduced the recidivism rate but is a bit forward thinking for this area.
Stringcheese - quite a few prisons have programs where the inmate takes the dog and lives with it as well as train it for adoption. The prison programs can be the last chance for rehabilitating incorrigible dogs. Wateree Correctional facility works with the Thoroughbred Rescue organization out of New York.
It was suggested that a small farm be added to the new jail to include a garden area where the inmates grew some of their own food, cared for the livestock the county owns, etc but the idea was not well enough received to be considered at that time.
Personally Ms. Doe I was pleased that Mr. McAbee acknowledged he was getting calls from concerned citizens who support our request for a livestock intake facility. I want to thank the animal lovers for supporting all the animals as well as the request for a decent and safe space be provided to the Sheriff for his four legged wards. I hope the letters continue to find their way to our Council.
I was informed that you were related to one of our Council person`s,if this is correct then you already have the inside track, and should be able to accomplish your mission, without any outside help.If my information is incorrect, please let me know, and I will consider joining your cause.

I have five family relations in this state, my two children and my husband’s father, mother and sister. None of them are on the County Council or for that matter in the county. Your information is incorrect but I did get a chuckle out of it. Thank you for asking me directly going to the source is the fastest way to the facts.
rino
Now that nicole has answered your question.
I have one for you.
Who passed that rumor to you.. name names and we will know who to believe and who not to believe.
This is the horse that was surrendered last weekend to the Sheriff's Office.

She has an appointment with the farrier this coming week, cannot have her teeth attended to until she is healthy enough to be sedated, cannot have her inoculations until she is healthier and even though her former owners nearly killed her by triple dosing her with parasites, she is still loaded with them. It will take 30 days to be able to give her a full de-worming program that will address the larva that no doubt are laying around waiting to hatch. (no pun intended)
We are considering a program where families that are thinking of buying their children a horse can come and learn about basic care and the costs. #34 was just a family trying to give their little girls the horse they thought they wanted. I think the Animal Shelter should include educational classes like this for dog and cat owners and host different vets offering them.
Nicole, that is why I asked you instead of posting an untruth, and have people repeating it.If you would like to know who mentioned this to me, I`ll be glad to tell you,but I don`t think it`s anyone else`s business.we have to many people spreading H.S. now,and my H,doesn`t stand for horse.we will talk soon.

Hello rino - As long as you know you are getting bad information that's good enough for me. Do you need some road apples for your garden? I have a surplus.
Nicole
I like your sense of humor, you are the only one lately that seems to have one.I believe what you stated about your family, and will tell the person that wanted me to ask, that I do.Let me know if there is anything that I can do to help,I`ll be sure to bring the large animal subject up at the next council meeting. You know people say that I just love to hear myself talk to the council members, who knows maybe they will listen,if I talk loud enough and long enough.Oh yeah, about the garden,I don`t have one. I get all my veggies, and fruit at the farmers market.

The AIM had an interesting article on the horse industry and the economic value of this industry. In our area as the second largest population as stated in the last state survey, Anderson has the second largest population of horses. We hold the number 1 position for goats and cows.
There are a lot of people diligently working behind the public's eye to have a large animal intake facility here in Anderson.
No, really Wyatt1 if you had paid attention we hold the #2 spot of horses , the title for horses "azzes" is up for grabs. <G>
The following is taken from the Sept. 2 meeting minutes.Thank you stringcheese for posting these.
END OF TAPE 1, SIDE 2
GRACIE FLOYD: Mr. Chair, I am going to speak for the Broadway Lake project. First of all, I don't know where the council member from district seven is getting her information about something with three hundred thousand dollars again. I don't know what she's talking about.
Secondly, the bridge, she was wrong in that aspect too. The bridge is gonna cost us not thirty million but thirty-five million dollars. We have talked with the feds, the federal people, about some of the money and we were told that we made the first cut. We're hoping that as it moves its way through the process of getting this money that we will make the second cut to get that money.
It's nothing -- we do not have thirty-five million and by not building the building, holding nine hundred thousand dollars, it would not help us one way or the other.
Secondly, the large animal thing, when we were working on an animal ordinance to try to take care of the animals in Anderson County, we did not get much cooperation from the council member from district seven. And I would like for it to be noted that the large animal population is important to -- well, I can't speak for full council, but I can speak for me. It is just as important to me as the dogs and cats in Anderson County that's taking over our county and some of our neighborhoods too. It's just as important.
Reading Gracie's second "secondly" let's be specific. MCW was never invited by Gracie to participate in her first or second committee on the new ordinances. She excluded her despite MCW asking to be included. Gracie takes her personal hostility out on MCW at every chance she has and she didn't care that it was going to hurt animals beyond cats & dogs at the time.
After receiving calls from horse owners and hanging up on them or threatening them with harassment charges she says "it's important" now? Why didn't she vote yes to having a place for them or include them in her ordinances?
Does the word "disingenuous" come to mind for anyone else? Back to work!
The fact that everyone has a clear understanding of the problem and many of us are working together to find a solution insures a positive outcome. Animal abuse, neglect and maltreatment are a sad occurrence in our nation. Those who work to address these problems face an uphill task, most especially in this economy.
The cost of materials and labor for the large animal facility we proposed was in the forty- thousand dollar range. Our plan did not include needs like grading the land or fill dirt and cement depending on what flooring the county ultimately decided upon. That is the reason for our statement the facility could be built for less than one hundred thousand dollars. We expect the project will come in well under that price. We do not expect that our rendition of what could be built is what should or will be built only that we offer a possible solution to each problem we identify.
Thank you to everyone who is supporting PEARL and the cost of rehabilitating the horses. Without your support we are hard pressed to be able to provide the county with this service. The cost of vets, farriers and feed are extremely high.
#34 formerly known as Tootsie is doing well. She will need to have her front feet x-rayed because of a mild lameness she is showing. She has seen a farrier once and pending the outcome of the x-rays will hopefully have a program for her hooves planned to insure she is not lame Once her body weight is brought up and her health is improved she will receive her vaccinations and have her teeth filed. We have a possible adoptive home if the outcome is a healthy horse. She is all ready putting on weight and is on a parasite control program. Like all starvation cases as her health improves her personality comes out. As an Arabian mare, she is going to be both beautiful and feisty.
