Dan Harvell repeats smear email

Last night at Kevin Bryant's town hall, Dan Harvell went on a totally off topic tirade against Obama.  It didn't have anything to do with Kevin so I'm not sure why he brought it up but you know how Dan Harvell loves to hear his voice.  He actually has a great public speaking voice and he's good at it so I can understand why.

Getting to the point,

Dan repeated the false smear that the following quote is from Barack Obama's book, Audacity of Hope:

"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Art or some other blogger in attendance can confirm that he used that quote.  Here is the real quote in context, from pages 260-261 of Audacity of Hope:

"Whenever I appear before immigrant audiences, I can count on some good-natured ribbing from my staff after my speech; according to them, my remarks always follow a three-part structure: "I am your friend," "[Fill in the home country] has been a cradle of civilization," and "You embody the American dream." They're right, my message is simple, for what I've come to understand is that my mere presence before these newly minted Americans serves notice that they matter, that they are voters critical to my success and full-fledged citizens deserving of respect.

"Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Just an FYI for anybody who cares to know that I wasn't just being rude and interrupting Dan just for the heck of it.  It amazes me that people recieve falsehoods in their email inbox and don't pause to think that it might just be wrong before repeating it.

"America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

It still sounds as if he will stand with the enemy instead of America to me.  If the Muslim in hiding, Hussein Obama, becomes president, it will be the end of the United States of America.  NObama is the only answer.

The distortion of Obama's words is no different from the distortion of John McCain's "a hundred years in Iraq" comment or even the entire thread that was created on The Cocklebur last week making McCain's votes on birth control and abortion sound like some sort of war on women.

I say it's time to call a halt to all of the lies and distortions that come with your average campaign - but, sadly, that'll never happen. It'd be a lot easier if speechwriters would have the candidate actually SAY WHAT HE MEANS instead of softening policy statements with weasel words.

For now, if you're going to play the game, it's only fair that everybody plays by the same rules. Laughing

By the way, Andrew, have you seen this yet?

That's called SATIRE. Like the Obama/New Yorker cover, it's FUNNY.

Ya see, it plays to the campaign talking points of John McCain's opponents that he: 1. Has a pill-popping wife; 2. Is too old to be President; 3. Isn't healthy enough to be President (see the bandages on his head, a not-so-subtle reference to his battles with skin cancer?); 4. Would represent a third term of George W. Bush (picture over the mantle); 5. That he and Bush are destroying the U.S. Constitution (burning in fireplace.)

None of those things is true - just as nothing on that New Yorker cover is true - but it mocks those who believe those things and use those issues as campaign issues. And this particular cover bites TWICE because it also mocks the controversy over that very same New Yorker cartoon. Satire, satire, satire.

But JD . . . you keep glossing over this point amid your definitions and diatribes about what is satire:

The New Yorker is a publication with professional journalists who are paid to write (call it a JOB) and compose articles, including those of satire, for their readership.

Kevin Bryant is a State Senator and a Pharmacist. Kevin crafts laws and dispenses pills when the General Assembly is not in session. That is his JOB.

Now, to pull the "JD is fair card out," I'm going to say that Kevin should stick to his two day jobs and not venture into the realm of SATIRE. At the same time, I don't think I'll have to twist too many arms at the New Yorker to make them not dispense pills or poor legislation.

There. Simple. All fixed.

SSHM, I believe the right to engage in satire falls under the First Amendment (under the part about free speech, you know.) Has somebody either repealed that amendment or exempted Kevin Bryant from it?

If so, no, not simple. Not all fixed.

Ahhh . . . but you see, it is simple.

A little thing called decorum, maybe? Might have heard of it, yes/no? There is a right time and a wrong time to say certain things. For instance, poor timing of commentary on Vogon poetry will get one pitched from an airlock.

You see in this instance JD, there will not be a Heart of Gold to rescue Kevin.

Very very simple . . . all is still fixed, save Kevin and the large foot in his mouth.

SSHM, I've followed politics in this state since before I was in grade school. The first state politician I ever met (I believe while he was still Governor of South Carolina) was Strom Thurmond. The first news interview I ever did, back in 1968, was with a South Carolina Attorney General by the name of Dan McLeod.

Since then, I've seen the Democrats shoot themselves in the foot in 1974 when they throw Pug Ravenel overboard and nominated William Jennings Bryan Dorn for governor, and he proceeded to get beaten by Jim Edwards. I've seen the Republican Party give us David Beasley and Mark Sanford while claiming they were Republicans. Sanford actually brought a couple of pigs into legislative chambers a few years back, which I thought was funny, but probably not in keeping with "decorum.")

I've heard the Chairman of the State Democratic Party at the time, an old college mate of mine named Dick Harpootilian, refer to our state legislature as "those sons of b*tches" in an oft-quoted tirade. (I told him afterwards that he should have called them "those b*stards" since even in South Carolina it's in poor taste to call somebody's Momma names like that.)

Decorum? Since when did South Carolina politicians pay any attention to decorum? When did we even start EXPECTING them to?

State senators almost always get involved in Presidential politics. That is certainly nothing new, and I really don't see why you expect Kevin Bryant to stay out of the Obama-McCain race. I certainly don't see other state officials staying out en masse, do you?

I think this is very interesting. I wish y'all knew what it was like living in my hometown of San Francisco. I have lived here my whole life and the beauty of the scenery and the city is 180 degrees opposite of the insanity of the politics. But don't worry, soon when the Messiah is anointed....we will all learn.

JD, just because it's funny to you doesn't mean you're going to force us to laugh too.

This "joke" is like bathroom humour.  It may be funny to a bunch of middle school boys but it ain't funny to everybody.

The only difference is that this isn't even funny at all, you Republicans are just too stubborn to admit you just like it cause it's anti-Obama.

Prevail, I knew you weren't big on reading comprehension but that intrepretion of the quote is pretty weak.  Let me break it down for you:

"they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

See the parallel structure?  Let me extend it on out for you:

they need specific assurances that their citizenship means something
they need specific assurances that America has learned the right lessons
they need specific assurances that I will stand with them should the political winds shift

He isn't declaring that he will stand with anybody.  He's writing about the assurances that he thinks Pakistani and Arab Americans are looking for from him.

The reason that I like the Bryant cartoon is because I am against Hussein Obama.  No bones about it.  I don't care what Hussein says, it's wrong to me.  The Democrats want Republicans to leave Hussein alone and not pick on him.  It should not matter that he and his left-coast party are pro-abortion anytime during the first 9 months of pregnancy; that they may let us keep some small handguns at home if they are registered; that we should lead the way in destroying all our nuclear weapons and reducing our military to a small political group; that we can ride bikes to save fuel while they cruise the world in jets; that cash should be redistributed so that the non-working bums have an equal share; that America must start sending about 1/2 our wealth to his kinfolks in Africa; and probably 99 other anti-American, anti-white people, anti-anti anything sacred.

Don't think for a minute that I am opposed to Hussein Obama just because he is a black Muslim.  I just think an American should lead our country.  NObama '08.

Andrew as explained previously, just because one person finds something funny, does not mean that all will find it funny. That is called personal preferance, something you might get a grasp of if you learn that what you think is right does not make it so. We all have our own ideas on what is funny and what is not, we all have our own idea of what is right and what is not. We all have our own idea of what the government should and should not be responsible for, that is what makes us different from other countries we are citizens we are not subjects. We get to say how we feel without any reprecussions from the government or other people. You may know like what I say, or I may not like what you say. But we have the right to differ. Now get off your high horse and enjoy whatever humor you can find.

I assumed that even though I don't agree with everyone on this site, we all have at least average intelligence and can have decent discussion.

Boy was I wrong.

Thanks prevail!

I've participated in a number of blogs for various topics (political, purely social, etc). How do I put this in a nice way? No, I'm just not going to say anything because it wouldn't be nice no matter how I twisted it.

Andrew and all simple minded democrats,

You must know that Senator Bryant did not put that Sheet on Barak Hussein Obama's head. Barak Hussein Obama did. By looking at the picture you must also realize that Obama seemed very proud that he was dressed like a terrorist. Indeed, he looks like every murdering terrorist that we as Americans have been exposed too.

Barak has no plan, he has no vision for America. If Barak Hussein Obama gets elected, we will pray for the Carter years to return.

We live in the greatest country in the world, and Barak Hussein Obama wants to change it. My, My, my....

Funny, I don't think Senator Obama looks like Timothy McVeigh.  Or Terry Nichols.  Or Rita Bixby.

but those were radical right wing murderers...God has forgiven them, and so has the right wing of the republican party.

I don't know if God has forgiven Timothy McVeigh or not, Palmeto-native. I don't have a direct line to Him to find out exactly what he thinks, as you seem to have.

However, I do know that it is the right wing of the Republican Party that has successfully kept capital punishment in play, against almost overwhelming opposition from left wingers, so people like McVeigh can find out for themselves what God thinks about their actions.

If "forgiving" a man means putting an IV in his arm and pumping in lethal drugs until he's dead, there are a lot of people on this planet who deserve such forgiveness, wouldn't you say? Laughing
