Kevin Bryant's isn't very good at satire. If this was supposed to be satire, he sucks at it.

Might as well put up a picture of Obama with Darth Vader or Satan. There is no "satirical" content in the Obama/Osama picture, it's just a bunch of idiots getting off to the fact that Obama and Osama are both brown men with white hats and have non-Anglo names that happen to rhyme.

Osama bin Laden killed over 3,000 American citizens in a day that we should never forget.

Barack Obama has won the votes of over 17 million Americans and is a U.S. Senator, and, if you believe the polls, most likely the next President of the United States.

See the difference, Kevin? Satire is supposed to be outrageous, but it also should be witty and contribute to the debate. How does this contribute anything?

Osama bin Laden killed over 3,000 American citizens in a day that we should never forget. (an event that your party has already forgotten)

If elected Obama Bin Laden will bankrupt and remove the rights of 300 million Americans, don't forget that, its an attack we CAN prevent.

But yet when the New Yorker put a "satirical" cartoon on its cover that Obama Bin Laden and others found offensive, you stood by and said nothing. Bit of a hypocrite aren't we Andrew?

I will agree that Bryant is a schmuck, but not becasue of this, anyone with as little experience as Obama Bin Laden deserves to be viciously made fun of since he's running for an office in which he VASTLY under qualified to hold.

zn,

Just because you say claim satire, doesn't mean it really is satire. A pig with lipstick is still a pig.

Satire is satire regardless of taste or lack there of. Again, I don't hear you condemning "The New Yorker" for their satire of Obama Bin Laden when "The New Yorker" and Bryant did the SAME EXACT THING. Could this be because the writers at the "New Yorker" and you share the same core Marxist-socialist beliefs and that makes the magazines satire OK and defendable, but since Bryant doesn't share those beliefs his satire is racism? You're a hypocrite Hammett a typical hypocritical "progressive" chastising someone you don't agree with for exercising their 1st amendment rights while letting people with the same ideology as you slide by when they do the same damn thing. If you're going to support the 1st Amendment, support it for EVERYONE, not just a select few, if you're not, do us a favor and go jump of the roof of the Calhoun. Now here's a little lesson for you, and even since this is before your time, Hustler Magazine v. Falwell is a good example of satire being tasteless but still satire and protected by the Constitution.

(now I know why Jesse Jackson is a Democrat)

see zn, you beat me to it.

The satire in in that Falwell piece is pointing out the slime of Falwell and other Christian Fundamentalists. They have just as many vices as the rest of us while preaching their incredibly hateful religious filth. They were pointing out that we shouldn't consider Falwell such a holy man. He's was just a man, nothing special about him.

On the other hand, we have Kevin Bryant's picture. What is the subject of satire? That Obama has a similar name to the current villain of the world? What change is the satire pushing for? For Obama to change his name?

As for the similarities between Obama and Osama, they end with that picture.

Both wearing funny hats? Yep
Both have names in the pattern of O*ama? Yep.
Both non-white? Yep.

Now, I've seen pictures of President Bush photoshopped into Osama's face and what not. Lee Rogers is right that Republicans have been the target of such nastiness before. The difference is that it wasn't done by my state senator.

See, I'm concerned about holding my elected representative in the SC Senate accountable for his public behavior, not what some pot head liberal in San Francisco does with a quick Photoshop.

See the difference?

There is much viler stuff on the internet than this dumb photo. Some of it bothers me, some of it doesn't concern me. But this was done by a State Senator.

Already the blogosphere is breaking out another round of South Carolina jokes. Playing us up like a bunch of of backwards hicks. Everywhere you go in the US, people disrespect South Carolina.

Does it hurt my feelings? Nah.
Could it hurt our economic development prospects? Yeah
Could it hurt my chances of getting a job elsewhere? Maybe

If Kevin Bryant wanted to start a conversation about Obama's views on Iran and Israel, he could have done it right here. That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard.

I'm gonna try my hand at satire. Let me know how I do :)

Here are two pictures: One is how Barack Obama spent his weekend. The other is how John McCain spent his weekend.

Obama & General Petraeus.

McCain taking a ride on H. W.'s golf cart.

There is no difference. Bryant is just a man, a dumb one, but yet still just a man with nothing special about him just like Obama is just a man, a dumb one, and not the Messiah as you believe he is regardless of what you or the media tell yourselves. Any satirical comment made by either politician is protected speech regardless of how offensive it may be. What you are failing to see is that you are applying a double standard and being a hypocrite. When a liberal media outlet makes a satirical cartoon about Obama Bin Laden its OK, but when its someone from the other party all of a sudden its a scandal. Just like Jesse calls Obama a "no good half breed n*&$%r" and its in the news only for a few days and no one really says anything about it, but if lets say Alan Keys or God forbid a white Republican were to call Obama the same thing, it would almost be the end of the world for the libs and they would demand his head, his job and do everything they can to totally ruin the man any way they could. What I'm getting at is that you libs let something utterly tasteless slide as long as it's done by a another lib, but if its done by a conservative, it might as well be the end of the world. As a group and as individuals you claim to fight "double standards" but then create them at any opportunity along the way.

Thanks for proving my point.
"ahammett- They have just as many vices as the rest of us while preaching their incredibly hateful religious filth. "

Tasteless satire done by a liberal against a conservative and you have no problem with it, matter a fact you call the mans views "hateful religious filth," becasue you don't agree with him even though satire like that is about as low as one can get. Now if the shoe was on the other foot and the National Review printed something like that about Obama you'd be raising absolute hell about it and demanding someone's head. Thanks again for proving my point there HAMMETT THE HYPOCRITE.....

BTW- Why would McCain need to go to the Mid East yet again, he knows whats up, what the Military does and what war is like unlike Mr. clueless who is over there right now. (this is in no way an endorsement for McCain so don't take it as such)

Oh yea, for satire to be effective there has to be some kind truth to it as well as an outrageous element to it, you know the outrageous part is what actually makes it funny. Oh wait, there IS a outrageous element to it, Obama riding around on a helicopter with the military acting like he knows what going on! Now I have to give it to you, THAT IS FUNNY, but since you didn't intend for it to be seen that way this is for you....

. . . and now we see Kevin's true colors. And to think everyone thought I was being too harsh on Anderson's Own Dudley-Do-Wrong. Nice to see MSNBC jump on the bandwagon.

Told you folks that how the REAL WORLD operates is different from how ANDERSON operates.

Just in case everyone forgot about the other offensive items posted at his blog, allow me to have a famous rock band sing about it . . .

I pray the electorate of Senate District 3 isn't as stupid as the dim bulb they elected four years ago. Send Kevin home.

You can call it satire but I call it truth. If Hussein Obama is elected and the democrats have 60 votes in the senate, I don't think the country will ever recover. I will vote for Sen Bryant and do all I can to persuede others to vote for him and even though I'll have to hold my nose, I'll vote for McCain. A vote for Barr or anyone else other than McCain IS a vote for Hussein Obama.

I will vote for Sen. Bryant again. He is a TRUE conservative and not a RINO. America had better wake up as to what may be our next president, Barack Hussein Obama. This country will fall under him and be dominated by our Muslim enemies. Some of his supporters seem to have no idea what Obama stands for and need to seek the truth about him and why so many enemies of the United States are backing him. Wake Up before it's too late.

Wow prevail ... wearing the tin-foil hat a tad too tight this morning?

"... this country will fall under him and be dominated by our Muslim enemies ..."

Yet when our governor attended the Bilderberger Meeting, none of you opted to don your tin-foil hats. Oh, you didn't know about this? Read on:

http://www.timesexaminer.com/content/view/760/1/

If anything, you and others in this county need to take a step back and not so blindly follow people. Politics is much more than right and wrong or black and white. There is a lot of gray that one must navigate through to get to the real message of the individual. To blindly dismiss Obama because of his middle name or religious beliefs is just as dumb as giving a pass to Governor Sanford for attending a Bliderberger Meeting.

Prevail ... wake up ... use that GRAY matter between your ears and don't blindly follow what you believe. You are so eager to question the outgoing Council Members and JRP yet you give Bryant a pass? Why? Because you know? Are you sure?

Oh yes, we need to wake up alright. If anyone is stooopid enuf to again reinstate any member of the GOP, to further nosedive this nation into economic and social chaos instead of an alternative direction, then woe unto you.

I for one have had way enough of the narrow-minded and lack-luster performance from the BUSH-league. Where Americans are losing their homes to foreclosure in RECORD numbers; a trade deficit puts in control of nothing. where national border security takes a back seat to profit-taking on oil; where a RECORD deficit faces us for decades to come; where we are mired in a succession of civil wars with no end game in sight from Iraq & Afghanistan and soon to add Syria/Israel, Iran and North Korea; where average families are struggling to feed themselves or pay bills; where nearly 1/3 of this nation cannot afford to get medical care; where the corporate structure is rapidly and cheaply being bought up or overtaken by foreign nationals ( can you say BUUD?); where graft and corruption is being pardoned while banks and mortgage giants face bankruptcy; where soon WE will be the third-world nation we have come to despise and shun.

If voting for Barack means ending all that, sign me up.

Bryant is an embarrassment to our County and our state. He should leave showbiz to the professionals and focus on doing what he was elected to do. His recent lapse in judgement is just another reason he needs to be brought home from Columbia. Moreover, he talks out of both sides of his mouth. On one hand he is for small government....when it comes to getting support and funds for local needs or promoting economic development or building roads (he said he was against the East-West connector - say thank you Kevin next time your creeping along Clemson Blvd in heavy traffic). On the other, he fervently supports the most intrusive aspects of government...those that dictate how you live your life, how a woman goes about making medical choices regard HER body, etc. To steal Bob Waldrep's infamous line from the notorious political caper - Finance Department Raid of 2007: "Are we in Nazi Germany?" Kevin would have gone far in Hitler's Third Reich.

The Bilderberger Meeting, you know I might actually cheer on someone driving a truck bomb into the lobby of that meeting simply becasue we shouldn't have to bow at the whim of corrupted unelected power brokers. Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people making money, but they have NO business trying to dictate the course of our lives, but that still doesn't change the fact that Hammett is a hypocrite.

BTW, Kevin. Sattire is fine. We are all free to slander our politicians. You should know, as you and Waldrep did a number on Raymond MacKay and Joey Preston. However, at some point you (Kevin) or we (the voters) need to decide if you are going to be a Sattirist or a Senator. I don't think you can be good at both. And based on what I've seen, you are better suited for the former(sattire).

There was nothing satirical about Bryant's picture. Maybe Kevin missed that lesson in English class. When he was interviewed by the Huffington Post, Kevin said he had questions about Obama's ties to the Middle East and that he didn't know what Obama's religion was.

A satire is the use of irony, SARCASM, etc. that exposes or denouces a vice or human folly. If the picture was a satire, he would be RIDICULING those who do believe there could be any remote ties between Obama and Middle Eastern terrorists.

Direct quote from Kevin: " I do think he's probably more sympathetic to nations that allow terrorism than I would prefer. And that's why I posted it."

Does that sound like he meant it to be a satire? This fool doesn't even have a clue!

And to address the comparison with the New Yorker's satire, I didn't support the New Yorker's satire, not because it wasn't satirical but because it was insulting to those who did fit those stereotypes the satire was playing on. I could see how a Muslim (and other groups stereotyped in the picture) would look at that and find it insulting.

Letitbe, that cartoon in the New York WAS ridiculing those who believe Obama is a Muslim who would burn the American ideal (flag) if elected president. It's kind of like the old television show "All In The Family." It poked fun at racism and anti-semitism by reducing it to the level of absurdity. And THAT, no matter how you want to frame it, is SATIRE.

Having said that, there are some elements of truth to the cartoon, although those truths are highly exaggerated. That is another element of satire: It contains an element of truth, but takes that truth to a level that becomes unbelievable.

As for the "Obama-Osama" posting, it is no different from those who refer to John McCain on The Cocklebur as "John McSame" in order to attempt to portray his potential election as a third George W. Bush term. For that matter, it's no different from the late Molly Ivins' constant references to George W. Bush as "Shrub" as a derisive comment on the fact that his father, George H.W. Bush, was President of the United States and a lesser "bush" would be a "shrub."

Politicians have always had fun with other politicians' names and with caricaturing their personality traits. Some are downright funny (picture Dick Cheney as Darth Vader, Newt Gingrich as "The Gingrich Who Stole Chrsitmas"); some are mildy amusing ("Hitlery" Clinton); and some are just in poor taste (Barney "Fag" instead of Barney Frank.)

Barry O should have no expectation of immunity to such wordplay, but I'm beginning to think he and his supporters do think they're above satirical criticism. In fact, I read a columnist somewhere lately who said, "You know, I'm not at all concerned about the COLOR of Obama's skin, but I'm beginning to have some doubts about the THICKNESS of it."

If he can't take it when the media in his own country mocks him or has fun with his name and his mannerism/philosophy, how in the world will he stand up to world leaders like Chavez when they start calling him names?

You guys are all missing the point satire is satire regardless of whether you like it or not. It is like telling a joke and one guy thinks it is the funniest thing he ever heard and the other guys thinks the whole thing is just stupid. No two people think or read into satire the same thing. The big fuss about the New Yorker was ridiculous, for God's sake its the New Yorker most of their covers are totally dumb but those elitiest that read the New Yorker think they are the funniest things going, until it did a number on their new annointed one. Well get used to it cause when that guy gets crowned and make no mistake it will be a crowning, it will get a lot worse. Don't believe me ask Mr. Bush or Mr. and Mrs. Clinton. What all the satirist did to them is really nasty. However that not withstanding Mr. Bryant should not have posted this to his web site with out some kind of explanation of where it came from and a disclaimer. I am sure this is not the first time this particular cartoon has been seen. Now it is news because a state rep put it on his web site, bad taste Mr. Bryant.
I really would hate to be Andrew when his idol falls and fall he will because Americans can't be too nice all of the time and if no comic or news agency makes fun of him you can kiss all of our freedoms good bye. Because there will be no sense of humor allowed and that will kill everything.
