Frankly, I've had about as much of this griping as I can take about this darned platform. You would think we were charging for its use! I'm particularly upset by the fact that I have posted traffic numbers on this site to show how strong the community remains, and they have been twisted into some kind of proof that its dying. FYI: The so much loved old forum rarely got above 40,000 page views in non-election season...

Anyhow, NEWSFLASH: I got off the phone with Lefora this evening with a two-week plan to make improvements to this platform that should solve the speed problems (caused by long threads), give you more space to write new posts, more time to edit posts, the ability to quote other posts in your replies and generally do what you want to do ...

Now please recognize the fine line between offering good feedback and just being annoying and unreasonable .... I'll be sending out a PM to explain the details. Included will be a short reminder of the added benefits of this platform compared to the oh-so fantastic phpBB.

Well said, Nick. Don't give up on the new platform, and please - PLEASE - don't give up on The Cocklebur community.

By the way, other than a couple of weekends ago when Lefora was slow because, I think you said, they were working on their servers, I haven't really noticed any unusual slowness on this site - at least, not as compared to the old site, which some days would give me time to get a cup of coffee between the time I clicked on the link and the forum index showed up. I think a lot of it is more a matter of perception than reality. Just my opinion.

By the way Nick, I'm thinking of firing up a Pickens County political forum. Right now, I'm leaning toward ProBoards, but I'd love to be able to hijack this format if it's possible. Any suggestions? Wink

Temper, temper. You asked for feedback and you got it. Grow up! There are only a few ways to describe "slow." As for charging, you very well know that approach would be non-productive. However, thanks for looking into ways to address the slowness. I assume you WANT all the activity you can get on this forum? Let's make nice, nice and deal with the issues and less with the emotions. I recognize that you have a difficult job.

The speed seems to have improved both here and on the AIM website.

You guys are just about the biggest babies I have ever seen. Gee whiz I like the old format wawawawa. If this format is so bad what the heck are you doing on it. Nick is right there has been more garbage on this forum about the new format than there is about the presidental elcetions which I think might be just a wee bit more important.

C'mon Republickin, you know it's not this format that keeps you from getting up to speed. JK,KO.

Nick
Thanks for everything your doing.Smile

And when you get the site going to suit everyone, I have some windows (house) that need washing. I won't complain if they are not perfect. Wink

Not to bust your bubble but over the years I've managed a few boards myself, the first one was a dial up BBS, two one is still here running today as phpBB and vBulleten based forums to this day. Now, here is what I've found over that time. If you want free and a system that breaks threads into pages so they load faster, allows quoting, allows editing, allows posting of pictures and videos, allows full BB Code, has easier identification of new posts and PM's that are easier to use, go with phpBB 3. If you want all those options without the phpBB security loopholes and don't mind buying a license, then go with vBulletin. Now, Lefora is ok, but it does have some MAJOR usability issues going on that need to be resolved, but since it's free, you can't expect to have everything...

ZN: (i'm assuming the burst bubble comment was aimed at me). This isn't about egos my friend. If I made a bad decision I'll be the first to admit it. The issue is that everyone acts as though this board is my full-time job, and that it is a core mission to our web products. It isn't.

It is supposed to be a fun side project. I can't spare any development/management cycles on it because we barely have enough development and management cycles to handle Independentmail.com!

We still want to support this forum and for it to be benefit from being associated with Independentmail.com. All we ask for is some awareness of the tradeoffs involved. That's all.

Wait for the pm. Wait for the improvements and I think this site will go from a C- to a B+ or an A-.

I already give it a B+, Nick, but you know how persnickety we can be on The Cocklebur. Thanks for humoring us on these issues. Laughing
