1. Why would a Baptist Church locate on Pope Drive ?

2. Why is the Pine Lake Golf Course on Broadway Lake ?

3. Why does the statue of a man checking his watch in front of the Courthouse look into empty space when it could have been placed so he looks at the clock tower on his left ?

4. Why does Nick never talk about his rich relative, Andrew Charalambous, the British real estate mogul who is opening the world's first eco-club in London ?

Usually the one asking the trivia questions has the answers, but I'm hoping some of you can help, since I can’t answer any of the above.

3. Mr Whitner is looking at the light pole in front of him. As I recall he is the man responsible for bring electricity to Anderson and he is looking at his watch and his light to make sure it goes on when scheduled. I noticed a few weeks ago there is a new plaque with an explanation under the light.

virginia,

Thanks for the input,

I figured Pope was an Anderson family but thought the juxtaposition was interesting.

I know there are lots of pines on the lake, but feel there must be a story why the different names. Broadway Lake was created in the 30s with a WPA grant. Possibly the smaller lake was there before that and was called Pine Lake. I wonder if the golf course is that old ?

Blogger was right on about the statue.

As for Nick, I read about this millionaire with the same last name and was just teasing. Nick hasn't so far taken the bait, maybe he hasn't read the entry. His last name seems unusual, but maybe not. Mine is long and I have yet to meet or read of anyone else with it.

Glad to have a new blogger aboard. Welcome...

Pappy: I wish Andrew was my rich relative! There are pages and pages of Charalambous entries in the London phonebook just for starters. Charalambous is to Greeks what Smith is to Anglos .... BUT, there is a very great possibility that we are distantly related. I'm going to call in and ask for some venture capital funding. :)

PAPPY, I just asked Mrs. Tippett if she had any idea why a Baptist Church would be located on Pope Drive in Anderson. She said, "I don't know. Maybe it was the only road they could find in Anderson that didn't already have either a liquor store or a Methodist Church." Smile

Hmmm. Queston No. 3.

According to my Googling, the 16th hole at Pine Lake is "a 235-yard, par 3 requiring a shot over a lake to the green."

I couldn't drive a golfball over Broadway Lake with a bazooka and a head start. Maybe that lake on No. 16 is called Pine Lake?

Beyond that, I'm still pondering why Rhode Island isn't really an island despite the name. Wink

# 16 hole at Pine Lake is not over water. # 18 is a Par three that if you choose can be played over part of Broadway Lake. There is a small pond at Pine Lake that does not come into play (well not for most people) that may have been called Pine Lake.
Why do people park on driveways & drive on park ways?

Actually, we do, in fact, drive on driveways (albeit a short distance, generally).  The term implies a small lane that allows us to "drive" to the garage, in or near which most of us will park.

As for driving on the parkway, we have to examine the multiple meaning of the word "park".  The roads bordering either side of Linley Park could be called Parkways, as in a means of transport through a park-like setting.  Should you attempt to park in certain areas of Linley Park (like the ballfields or playgrounds), you will receive a citation.  Should you attempt to park in Fenway Park, you will receive a knuckle sandwich.  It is true that one should avoid parking in the middle of the parkway.
