Impressive blog and good discussion. I’m from Kentucky and just passing though. I have to admit that I’m ignorant about South Carolina State government but wanted to comment on what I think is likely similar everywhere. It’s interesting that Sen. Bryant seems focused on abortion and gays. I’m about as far left as I suppose you’ll find but believe it or not, I adamantly oppose abortion and I find homosexuality to be hideous. On the issue of gays however, it really has no place in government. Regardless of the gibberish that GWB has spewed in his SOTUA, I’ve been married for 24 years and can assure you that gays have never threatened my traditional marriage. The gay issue is typical nonsense fear mongering, making us think that gay folks are going to break up our marriages and sneak under our doors and molest our children while we sleep. You see, Democrats believe in the Constitution (and yes, I know you can hammer on gun control and I’ll give you that one in advance). Accordingly, they’re not going to try to regulate what people can or can’t do in the privacy of their own homes. Republicans however, using a chapter of the “How To Manipulate” textbook by Karl Rove, have zeroed in on how to scare the bejeebies out of us by making us think that gays are going to somehow ruin our traditional marriages and lifestyle. You see, if us guys think that another guy’s gay, we tend to stay away from him as we don’t want him hitting on us. We think of them as perverts and want nothing to do with them. The thing is however, that’s not the case and it isn’t what usually happens. We really have no more fear of being hit on by them than we do the ladies in the supermarket. It’s just a mindset thing that the Rs have learned they can focus on. There’s another issue here. None of us guys are likely to dispute their thinking or their rational for bringing the gay issue into politics, least we be gay too. It’s really a scam. It’s almost as bad as telling us that a United States Senator is a terrorist that’s planning to attack us. It’s all insinuations that wants to plant a seed in our head to mislead us into thinking they our here for our best interest.
The Gay thing worked well for GWB but doesn’t seem to be that big of an issue in most of America now. Why? Because 8 years ago, more Americans had affordable jobs, not losing their homes, gas was 1.25 a gallon, their kids weren’t dying in an unneeded war, higher education was affordable, the economy was going well, the nation was far less divided, the Constitution was more than “a goddamn piece of paper”, people had far more faith in their government and the direction of the country, the nation wasn’t spiraling out of control in debt, so things like gay marriages could easily distract people. Today, people have real problems and concerns and really don’t give a damn if a couple of faggots are down the road doing the nasty nasty.

I'm anxious to see how the liberals on here deal with an avowed liberal (Andy) carelessly and flippantly using the word "faggot" in his post. I don't believe this conservative would have done that. Wink

I wonder if Andy realizes that the Republipukes may be "using a chapter of the "How To Manipulate textbook by Karl Rove," but he's living in denial because the Democraps are using "How to govern and redistribute wealth by Karl Marx." News flash for ya boy, both major parties are at fault for the mess we're in. Lemmie repeat that again. BOTH MAJOR PARTIES ARE AT FAULT FOR THE MESS WE'RE IN. It's 50% / 50% on the guilt. This is becasue of BOTH PARTIES corrupt practices of following the almighty dollar for their own personal then political gain, rather than doing what's best for the country and representing the people as they should. Lindsay Graham is a PERFECT example of this problem, but then again, I don't think we're gonna get congress to do whats best for the nation and pull a joint session "Jim Jones" Jonestown style re-enactment inside of the capital building, but if they do I'll be happy to donate big $$$ to buy the Cool-Aid...

"It's interesting that Sen. Bryant seems focused on abortion and gays."
Simple issues for simple minds....Seems strange to me but you would think that the Republipukes and the gays would be natural allies on the abortion issue. Now, who has less abortions than a bunch of faggots?

I'm not sure if I've been banned as my andy42302 user name doesn't seem to work anymore. If I'm not welcome here, I completely understand and will gladly step aside if that's the case.
zn706, I'm well aware that both parties are corporate owned and that their main objective is to line their own pockets while legislating for the best interests of their campaign contributors. Your 50/50 assessment however is way off for several reasons, mainly that Republicans have been in power. The Bush Administration has unquestionably been the most corporate friendly admin in history. It has also been the most secretive in history. As mentioned in my previous post, the state of the Union is much more in trouble than it was 8 years ago. George W. Bush can be blamed for the majority of this because of his gross incompetence, abjects failures, and total disregard if not hatred towards working Americans trying to make a decent living. The Republicans in Washington are equally guilty because they've backed in in every way. They've rubber stamped his every whim. The result has been a major shift of the wealth of the country to the upper class.
You might be able to say something like "the Dems would have done it too" but you can't say they DID do it because they haven't been in the drivers seat.
jdtippet, my point was that what gays do in their own home, regardless of how disgusting, is now the least of people's worries.

Andy, I totally agree with your last two lines: What gays do in their own home is none of anybody's business. It's only when they seek that SANCTION of government and when they openly flaunt their lifestyles in the faces of everybody that the backlash starts. But don't attack me on that. I had my say on same-sex marriage a few weeks ago.

Beyond that, however, you anti-Bush rhetoric is totally off-base. But that's just my opinion, as a conservative to a liberal.

And I seriously doubt your screen name andy42302 has been banned or restricted on The Cocklebur. To date, I haven't seen enough cogent thoughts from you to even warrant attention, let alone sanctions. I don't believe it's against forum rules to spout Democratic talking points, is it?

"Your 50/50 assessment however is way off for several reasons"

Wrong, the deficit has been climbing sharply since WWII, look at which party has been in control of congress for the majority of time since WWII, yup you guessed it, tax and spend Democpras.

"The Bush Administration has unquestionably been the most corporate friendly admin in history."
Yea they have but on the other hand lowering corporate taxes created jobs and growth.

"total disregard if not hatred towards working Americans trying to make a decent living."

HAHAHAHAH!! He lowered taxes and capital gains taxes for millions from 32% to 15%. That's about the only thing I can say thanks to "W" for.

"The Republicans in Washington are equally guilty because they've backed in in every way. They've rubber stamped his every whim. The result has been a major shift of the wealth of the country to the upper class."

Lets look at all the Democraps who have used their position for personal gain:
-Diane Feinstein (D-CA)(contracts to her husbands company)
-Kent Conrad (D-ND) (Shady loan from Countrywide)
-Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) (Shady loan from Countrywide)
-William Jefferson (D-La.) is under criminal investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for possible bribery in exchange for promoting business deals in Africa, and $90k in his freezer...
-Clarence Norman Jr., the longtime powerbroker of Brooklyn NY Democrats was found guilty of intentionally soliciting illegal campaign contributions.
-Former Democrat Gov. Donald Siegelman of Alabama was charged in a "widespread racketeering conspiracy" that includes accusations he took a bribe from former hospital executive Richard Scrushy for a key state appointment.
-Frank Ballance - a former Democrat Rep. from North Carolina was sentenced to four years in federal prison for conspiring to divert taxpayer money to his law firm and family through a charitable organization he helped start.
-Chuck Chvala, a Former Democrat Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader was sentenced to nine months in jail for felony misconduct in office and illegally funneling campaign contributions.
-Raymond Reggie, a New Orleans political Democratic consultant and fund-raiser who is Senator Kennedy's brother-in-law was sentenced to a year in prison after pleading guilty to bank fraud charges.
-Harry, Reid (D-Nev.) paid $10,000 to a pension fund controlled by Clair Haycock, a Las Vegas lubricants distributor and his friend of 50 years. The payment gave the senator full control of a 160-acre parcel in Bullhead City that Reid and the pension fund had jointly owned. Reid's price for the equivalent of 60 acres of undeveloped desert was less than one-tenth of the value the assessor placed on it at the time, a blatant ethics violation.
-John Murtha, who should be repeatedly beaten with a sledge hammer until he stops twitching, brother gets $20 million in Defense Contracts.
-Nancy Pelosi's nephew gets $ millions Defense Money earmarks.
-Rep. Paul Kanjorksi's (D-PA) children's companies get $ millions Defense Money earmarks.
-Rep. Alan B. Mollohan (D-WV) is currently under federal investigation for misusing his position to benefit himself.
-Rep. David Scott (D-GA) tax evasion and misuse of official resources for political campaign activity.

The problems we're facing haven't just arisen in the past 8 years like you'd like to believe, this is the result of bloated out of control spending, bad government policies and a growing welfare nanny state since WWII. It's just been a common lib practice to remain short sighted and blame them on the past 8 years even though the Democraps have been the controlling party in congress for the majority of the time since WWII. Now, for stating that the Republipukes are the root of corruption and responsible for the problems we have now, even after the Democraps majority have been taxing, spending, welfaring and running up the deficit since WWII, I'm just gonna have to toss out the bullshit flag on you.

Zn, if we're looking for corruption and bad governance, you and I could go on for days and days attacking each others parties and representatives. We both know that's true.

"Yea they have but on the other hand lowering corporate taxes created jobs and growth"----- How many jobs have been added recently? What companies have hired more due to more revenue from taxes? How many new employees has Exxon hired lately? What was the unemployment percentage when Clinton left office and what is it now?

"HAHAHAHAH!! He lowered taxes and capital gains taxes for millions from 32% to 15%. That's about the only thing I can say thanks to "W" for" ----------- Uh, another misconception on people hearing what they want to hear. When that last tax cut legislation went thru, folks making around $1 million a year got a break of about $50K. Those making around $50K got a break of about $20 bucks. In any stretch of reality, that's such a minute amount that equates to practically no break at all. But, if it amuses you, technically you can say that everyone got a tax break.

"Wrong, the deficit has been climbing sharply since WWII, look at which party has been in control of congress for the majority of time since WWII, yup you guessed it, tax and spend Democpras"----- What was the deficit after 12 years of Reagon and G.W.H.Bush? What was it after 8 years of Clinton? What is it now after almost 8 Years of the borrow and spend GWB Administration. Quite honestly, the 2 year stretch(2004-2006) of a Republican controlled Executive, Legislative, and Judicial government has pretty much sent us down the toilet. They had their chance and instead of looking after the voters, they fleeced them for all they could. They've shattered the economy, put us into an unnecessary war, and went on a wild spending binge that will take years to recover from.
Oh, there's plenty of blame to go around and finger pointing is easy to do. But with everything that's happened in the last few years, it's been Republicans at the wheel so ultimately, they will be held responsible.

Oh, and before you go on about how badly the Dems have done since they taken over, keep in mind that it has been Reps that broke the filibuster record the first year. They've refused to allow legislation to move forward EVEN WHEN THE DEMS WOULD GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANTED. Talk about BS!

Obviously you don't read much becasue you're insinuating that I'm a Republipuke after writing this, ""This is becasue of BOTH PARTIES corrupt practices of following the almighty dollar for their own personal then political gain, rather than doing what's best for the country and representing the people as they should. Lindsay Graham is a PERFECT example of this problem, but then again, I don't think we're gonna get congress to do whats best for the nation and pull a joint session "Jim Jones" Jonestown style re-enactment inside of the capital building, but if they do I'll be happy to donate big $$$ to buy the Cool-Aid..."" (and no I'm not kidding either)

Now people like you are part of the problem, you'd rather sit around and point fingers and accuse the other party of creating the problems we have, rather than ponying up to the truth that they're BOTH equally at fault, both totally corrupted and both hell bent on shredding the Constitution. I can;t believe that you actually believe what the leaders of the "party" you follow tell you, regardless of the truth that stares you in the face that you continue to deny and ignore. You're a lemming. Now why don't you take that energy and use it against both corrupted major parties so we can hopefully rid ourselves of this oppressive nanny state, the assholes that currently lead it and hopefully place our government back within its original Constitutional bounds.

But Bush did save me over $2000 on my taxes with his cuts, but that doesn't mean I actually like him.

I'm glad the Republipukes aren't letting legislation move froward, in 99.99% of the cases, if congress is doing nothing, we're all better off becasue if they're in a stalemate, they're not causing further damage.

JD feel free to use it whenever....

Zn, I'll be big enough here to apologize for saying that you're a Republican or associated with that party. I'll digress however and say that I detect a great deal of right leaning moderates here that seem to want to disguise in left leaning liberal clothing. Regardless, I'm not sure I'm following your strategy here. You seem to be insistent on blaming both parties yet all I'm hearing is about all the corrupt Dems and your admiration for Bush because you saved you a few bucks on your taxes. What you didn't address was the deficit now vrs the Clinton years, jobs now vrs then, and the lack of tax cut I mentioned for main stream America (20 bucks for $50K workers). In 1994, the voters rightfully and soundly rejected the Democrats and it should have sent a message. In 2006, voters showed their unhappiness with Republicans. I'm not seeing that the Rs heard them and accordingly, the Rs could be facing their worst year in history in 08. I'm still convinced that the Clinton years were much better than now and certainly something that most Americans would like to see again. My thoughts are that ousting the present regime (and once again, the only reason the Ds haven't accomplished anything is due to the Rs roadblocking) is in the best interest of the country. If the Ds screw it up, they will once again be replaced. I just think that sending a message that they need to fear retaliation from the voters is far better than something like "well, they're all crooks anyway so we're all gonna die". I really haven't heard anything that comes close to fixing the problem from you Zn. Yet, you label me the finger pointer that would "rather sit around and point fingers and accuse the other party of creating the problems we have". I suppose that as long as you can save a few grand on taxes, screw the rest of American workers that got nothing while the wealth has shifted to the elite few? I just can't buy that. Nor can somewhere close to 80% of Americans.

I was showing you that BOTH parties are corrupt to the core, you already established that the R's are corrupt but you never mentioned anything about the Douchebags (D's). Why is that? Oh yea, becasue just like everyone else, you've become so partisan from following their BS that you can't even see the deep corruption in your own party. With that in mind I decided to show you the other side of the coin. Now, until you step back and look at the WHOLE picture and toss your party allegiance aside, you'll never get past blaming the "other" party. Now the truth of the matter is that the R's use half of the country against the D's and the D's use the same tactic against the R's with the other half of the population. They do this so they can keep you focused on your perceived political "enemy" and what your "enemy" is doing or not, while at the same time they're snowing you into thinking that the other party is the problem when the leadership of both parties is only there to further their own personal fortunes and power at your expense while they both remain in the pockets of the lobbyist while they blame each other and lie to your face.

Andy, I am so glad you have continued to take on our resident curmudgeon, ZN. There is some truth to what he says and he often contributes to the discussion however inadvertently. Smile

Petunia, How long have you been out of the work force? I mean when those tax cuts came into being, I saw a difference in my paycheck and I liked it. The professors I worked with who don't think they are rich by the way and all voted for the other guy thought they all got a raise. They didn't realize it was a tax cut for the rich! So why everyone insists that this is a tax cut for the rich is beyond me. I mean simple math dictates that if some one is going to get a tax break of say 10%, If I make 30K per, and some other guy makes 60K per the guy making 60K is going to get more in his paycheck but we all got the same amount of a tax break. In all actuality, the rich are paying far more now then they ever have.
