Does anyone know the status of the Kroger Building?
I rode by there yesterday and it looks like they are tearing part of it down.
Have they run into some type of problem?
I know that sometimes you have to make things worse before they get better, but it looks like they are going backwards with this renovation.
Does anyone have an update on it?

I ride by there all the time and don't think they are having a problem. My other half seems to think they may be doing something with the facade.

Any demolition would be a contradiction of how the project was sold to begin with. There was supposed to be very little demo done because supposedly the place was a perfect fit, just what was needed.

We were on our way into Anderson yesterday and saw the site.  There is a huge hole in the front and anyone could just walk on through it.

I hate to say it Dune, but you would have to have SOME demolition to meet code requirements. We're talking about going from a grocery store to an office building. Just a cursory thought, but the sprinkler systems would have to be upgraded/updated to handle the new role of the building.

I mean really . . . go watch old episodes of This Old House. Chug a beer every time Norm or Bob find something that raises the cost of the project (e.g., extra demo, etc.)

Yes . . . there is a This Old House drinking game . . .

Leave it to DumbBuddy to leap to a conclusion with out facts. Give it time Stanley. Rome wasn't built in a day. It's all going as planned and it's all on budget, no matter what the (we're agains't it) WAIM crowd lies about.

We are going to end up paying $7,000,00.00 for a vacant lot.

Did we ever hear who made the big commission on this sale?  This was nothing more than a Joey Preston payoff to someone at taxpayers expense.  Millions for a soon-to-be empty lot in a bad neighborhood.  Maybe a new dance hall/library/restaurant combo would fit in well once the lot is cleared.  I think a $25 million bond would do the trick, and no tax increase, right Joey Ray?  Most county governments would find this one stupid act by an administrator reason enough to fire him.  But this is Anderson.

So negative.

The Kroger Building is a major opportunity to provide parking, consolidate county offices, and serve as an anchor to improve the neighborhood it borders. There are a number of older homes that anyplace else would be worth $$$ if the neighborhood was not blighted. If anything F&P, the county is doing its part to rehabilitate the neighborhood by providing a presence in the area. It's textbook neighborhood rehab 101.

I suspect the both of you would grouse if the sky was blue and it was a comfortable day.

I really do believe the Kroger purchase will prove in the long run to have been an excellent choice and very good for the entire community and county.

It is behind schedule by several months and if it comes in on budget, it will be the first major project to do so in at least three years.

I'm just relating how the project was sold to council by Joey PReston. That's all. Do the unthinkable! Check the public record.

So from the most capable and talented adminsitrator on the planet, we're getting neighborhood rehab 101? for Seven mill? and that technique is to spend public funds on a location that private enterprise gave up on years ago,and refuses to touch with a ten foot pole? Thank god we didn't go for the advanced approach!

DumbBuddy/Stanley

The former super market was ahead of its time. A county building will help improve the neighborhood. Come to think of it, your neighborhood would improve if you'd move back to Myrtle Beach. Would they have you? You don't know if the "kroger project" cost will be $7 Million or not.You just like to make stuff up, stir things up and call it journalism. Bunk!

. . . and this is where I have an issue.

So Stanton.

What would you do to remedy the blighted neighborhoods in Anderson County? Would you do nothing and allow crime and crack to run rampant as "urban revitalization" is not a core component of "your government?" Or would you take the leap of faith and bank on the fact that a spearhead of somesort, either public or private, is needed to turn around a blighted neighborhood?

Please enlighten us, as, to date, I have yet to see ONE constructive post about what you would do to improve Anderson County. Spouting off some bull about running the council out and firing the administrator won't pass the test either. I want to hear YOUR FIX - a FIX that is independent of whomever occupies the seven council seats and the one administrator seat.

Don't worry, I won't hold my breath . . .

PS: For the umpteenth time, republikin is not amy. Look at the writing styles . . .

Do some of you really believe the empty lot is worth several million dollars?  If Kroeger was ahead of it's time locating there and now is the right time, then why didn't another grocery chain buy the building and open a modern grocery store?  It's not that some of us are opposed to revitalization as most of us are fully supportive of anything to help our blighted areas. But for Preston to overpay by several million dollars for a building he sold to council as almost ready to move into burns us where our empty wallet used to be.  Don't you other folks realize who is stuck with all the bills that Preston is leaving us to pay for?  And, how about the bank building on N. Main where he has leased the downstairs for even more county offices?  How many more millions will be necessary to bring that building up to what is needed?  Just because some of us take the 'realist' viewpoint only means that we are concerned about how our taxes are spent....something we have been saying for years.  Again, does anyone know who the realtor was???

Come on people. How old is this conversation? Are you still hung up on the Kroger building. We really have more important things to talk about like the fact that our community is getting ready to go all to hell come January at the hands of MCW and her minions. Let's move on
