While in my favorite coffee shop, a debate erupted due to an article in the Independent Mail by Heidi Cenac concerning the County Election Results. Three groups with contrasting opinions expressed the following views:

• The County Administration will adjust to the new changes. They will listen carefully to every request by Council members, and they will respond cooperatively, until they gain the trust of the majority.
• Ron Wilson request for a full audit, regardless of the cost, has thrown a screw ball to the Council, the present and the new one. They will have to find a way out of it, without appearing to be too lenient toward the Administration. Probably organizing a committee to study the issue will allow them a graceful way out.
• The movement that elected the new Council will be moving to the next stage, which will involve a long list of requests for investigation. Among the requests will be calls for investigating campaign contributions, expenses in the name of economic developments, credit card expenses and reimbursements, and various contracts with no bedding process.

I think you have a crystal ball!  It sounds quite probable and realistic.

Art,

So based on your third bullet point, we elected the Spanish Inquisition? Nice to know the new council is ready to help the people and not sow the seeds of political revenge.

Did you catch the dripping sarcasm? I hope you did . . .

SSHM,

I read it differently. The people who have been elected are not exactly on the same sheet of music as the movement who has elected them. The new Council members will have to perform a balancing act. On one hand, they need to be reasonable and assist the County in moving forward. On the other hand, they need not to appear as violating the trust of the movement that elected them. It will be very interesting to watch this game of chess.

Mr Kaldas & SSHM,

I think some may be fooled about what to expect from the new councilpeople.
I know a couple of them and what I think will happen will be for the three of them to form a type of coalition doing the following:

A- Being progressive and supporting Eco-Dev but without all the bells & whistles. Also consolidate all the eco-dev factions.
B- Working with the Administrator but expecting more "transparancy" from his office and with some restraints on his spending.
C- Streamlining the budget and reducing the number of county employees.
D- Having some type of audit but not going off on any witch hunts.

I think that the other four will have to decide to follow or to be left out.
The ones that do not follow will have some explaining to do to the voters and may be in their last terms of office.

I feel a great deal of hope with this new council.

The voters have asked for change but they want some order with the change.

Here’s some more coffee talk about another article by Heidi Cenac, who quotes items from a presentation by John Moore.

The article states that the 100% water tax on those living outside the city, “gives a break to city residents who paid for the water system’s development.”

Whoa horse, any costs that were incurred in connection with negotiations prior to the utility’s purchase were repaid the city residents with an issue of revenue bonds funding the whole deal.
Revenue bonds are called that for a purpose. They are paid for by revenues generated by the project they are funding. This protects the city from going over a legislated limit for general fund borrowing.
If the receipts are insufficient to cover any annual payment, then rates are raised to produce more revenue. Since outsiders pay twice what residents pay, they are at double the risk.
Shouldn’t the City Manager know this ?

Pappy, at least you HAVE WATER!!! You are so lucky.  I have been paying for YEARS, literally, for the taxes to support county infrastructure.  I am STILL on a well.  I do not have the luxury of fussing about water system water, because I don't have water in that format.

Curious, what utility's water district are you in ?

Yes, in your regard, we are lucky. My post was mainly about the spin some city managers put on their actions.

Belton-Honea Path water Authority serves our area.  the water line goes near our home, but not far enough down the road to reach us.

You can pay to have a line laid. No water company or governemnt entity can or should be required to bring water pipes to ALL rural areas. Move into the City, it's a great place to live. You know, the Dr. Brown letter onwho lives where ?????

Oh, just pick any bank, Queen. Rob any of'em and you're guaranteed lifetime retirement.  You won't have to pay for anymore more of your food, medicine, clothes, or utilities.  You'll have the pleasure of living in a gated community, and you won't be bothered by those pesky telemarketers eitherLaughing

The new council will consist of a coalition led by Bob Waldrep. :-)

Dangit, Ed, you had me reaching for my ski mask and my handgun until I realized which "gated community" you were talking about.

With my luck, I'd wind up at one of those Federal gated communities that has only tennis, no golf. I had to give up tennis about 20 years ago when my left shoulder fell off.
