Swearing on The Cocklebur

Can we stop swearing at each other here please?

I don't know what's happening to me of late, but I just wince every time someone swears here. The other day, when I was in a business meeting, one of my colleagues was just letting it rip and I physically felt each word as a blow.

Come on people, why do you feel inclined to use curses at every opportunity? Is it really impossible to communicate disgust and distaste without using foul language? Besides, just today I called this forum "respectable by Internet standards." Can we try and live up to that? Responses please!

Hmmmm....I hate to agree with nature-boy but he may have a point Nick. If you are going to hold the participants to a certain standard you may want to raise the bar and remove that. It sets a precedence.

There's nothing wrong with that word.

I recall hearing a story about President Harry S Truman giving a speech in which he used the phrase "horse manure."

Afterwards, a reporter approached Truman's wife, Bess, and said, "Mrs. Truman, can you get him to stop using that phrase in public?

Mrs. Truman said,"You're joking, aren't you? It took me 30 years to get him to use that phrase."

Perhaps we should leave well enough alone. The Cockleblur should never become X-rated or even R-rated, but a bit of PG-13 humor doesn't hurt occasionally. Wink

Your right JD there's nothing wrong with that word, but not every one is as intelligent as you and it doesn't take much encouragement for them to drag the conversation to the gutter.

I think your request is fair, Nick. We all need to be mindful of that fact that what may not offend us personally does offend many who read The Cocklebur.

I know I've pushed the boundaries a few times myself in the past. Here's to doing a better job of using BACKSPACE before I hit SUBMIT on some of my posts.

I suppose he could change the name to Hemorhoid.  Now who can take issue with the medical term for PITB?

And if anybody bothers you, douse'em with Preparation H.  Laughing

It's funny that a blog with a direct reference in it's title to one's posterior should have the double standard to ask us to not use such common reference words such as f*ck, sh*t and other words said in daily conversations by millionsUndecided.

No, Wyatt, what's disappointing is that YOU have no idea how offensive some of those words are to the majority of the people in Anderson County. If you can express a thought WITHOUT offending, then why not do it? If you can't, then why even try?

You have a lot of good ideas, Wyatt, and you've become something of a community leader. Why run the risk of chasing away potential allies by being obstinate on your perceived Constitutional right to use profanity on a privately-owned forum like The Cocklebur?

Aww, JD  I knew you liked me ( in your own twisted way anyways)

My expression of reply is that during common talk, on the streets, in the bar, during a foottball game, or between two guys at the check-cashing joint, is laced with cursing and profanity.  A study recently presented showed foul language is more prevalent now than ever before.  Even the president has been caught duringbites uttering swear words.  Does that make him that the leader of the free world a feeble dolt?  ( wait, I recind that reference...)

Cursing is commonly accepted, and natural. It is in movies, in television, in radio and video, and in print.

And having the butt reference in this blog title is ludicris to begin with....

wyatt
The common talk you refer to is also common in the schools where my kids attend, but I don't allow them to bring it home.
While I may not have control on what people say, I do want my kids and friends to know that conversation can happen without some of the descriptive words used on the streets.
I feel it's a way for me to keep from lowering myself to the standards of others, just because it's accepted.
Am I better than anyone on here? NO Way
But this forum is something I participate in (in my own little way) and I want to let my kids know it can be done, and be fun without gutter talk.
Do I slip and say things from time to time? Yes
I just try to incorporate good language into this as I would if I were talking to your wife or child, with respect!

Plus, you can usually tell a lot about someone by the words that they use. This could be curse words, slang words, or what I would call "smart words" (words not normally used in everyday conversations).
For instance, if there was an atractive lady that cussed like a sailor, her attractiveness would deminish somewhat, simply because of the words she used in conversation. Also, what if those on County Council cussed in every sentence they used during public meetings? That would be uncalled for in my opinion. There is a time and a place for everything.

I amend this request and ask for consideration that swearing be allowed only if swearing is used at or about SC State Senator Kevin Bryant, so that Kevin Bryant's feeble little mind may better understand our disgust with with his vastly sub-par job performance in Columbia. Thanks for your consideration of this matter.

Does anyone second this?
