Good God in heaven! I no sooner posted about MacKay's positive mailer from yesterday and Bob Waldrep's latest nasty political "hit piece" lands in my driveway. It is a shameless attack on Raymond Mackay as well as as insult to the intelligence of voters throughout the County. If the voters of County Council District #1 want this kind of negative BS to continue, then Waldrep is their NEGATIVE man. The stakes are high here make no mistake about it. Cindy Wilson and the Rick Driver hate radio crowd are one Council seat away from taking political control of Anderson County. They know it. And they are desperate. When all the lies and negativity is done, the real choice for voters of District #1 next Tuesday is simple: stick with the negativity of Bob and the Cindy Wilson/Rick Driver crowd, or vote for positive change. One thing is certain. If the voters of District #1 don't send Bob Waldrep and the Cindy Wilson/Rick Driver crowd a message that these negative political shennanigans are unacceptable, we will continue to suffer from it.

Can you post this.

Based on Nick's column in AIM this morning - he seems to be part of the "negative" crowd. Maybe that's not fair but he sure gives me the impression he supports the "change." What's sad is true republicans have allowd a bunch of libertarians (a word for nut-bunch)virtually take over the county. There is change afoot alright, we're going backwards.

John-Cleese,

Is this the letter or is this a standard mailout? I had a friend of mine share with me last night a direct mailing from the Waldrep Camp.

Let's just say Waldrep appears to have given up on discussing REAL issues and is content on slinging mud until Tuesday. I guess I'd like to know why a senior statesman can't rise to the occasion and run a positive campaign, like his challenger.

Just another reason to look towards MacKay for new leadership.

This negative hit piece from the Waldrep campaign is formatted like the Times Examiner. I have not seen a negative letter from the dirty birds in Waldrep's campaign. It's OK that Nick supports change. I do too. And Raymond supports positive change. The job for Tuesday for District #1 voters is to send a message to Bob, to the morning radio crowd and even to the local Republican Executive committee that we've got a belly full of negativity and we will not reward those who continue to engage in it. I am supremely confident that Raymond will carry the day on Tuesday. Indeed, 54 percent of the voters rejected Bob Waldrep's negative politics two weeks ago and I suspect that an even greater percentage will reject him after these continued negative stunts in the run-off eclection.

Not surprising, as he did a ripoff of Eddie Moore's ad.  If Waldrep were in the public schools, he'd be expelled for plagiarism.

Questioning a man's loyalty to a party whose label he carries in an election runoff is NOT dirty politics. It does amuse me that Waldrep's supporters have chosen this line of attack, given his partisan history over the years - in politics, you attack from a position of STRENGTH, not weakness - but it's all publilc record and fair game.

Lost in all of this brouhaha over partisan identity, though, is the fact that many of those accusing Waldrep of "dirty politics" are the same ones who, over the past two years, have gleefully accused him of being senile, incompetent, unable to stay awake during council meetings, dishonest, and on the take.

THAT is dirty politics. Those of you who engaged in those accusations against Waldrep are the epitome of hypocrites. To throw cheapshots day after day after day at the man in recent months, then accuse him of "dirty politics" when he throws a couple of his own, is the equivalent of the schoolyard bully running to the teacher when one of his victims breaks his nose with a punch, a la George McFly in "Back to the Future."

I'm both fascinated and amused to watch this unfold, even though I have no stake in the outcome. My view of it is that, in Anderson County, EVERYTHING related to politics is dirty. It seems to continue a trend of a national partisan environment where both Democrats and Republicans have a tendency to EAT THEIR OWN.

Personally, I'd just like to have it over, so real issues can again come to the forefront of the political debate - not the negative, often frivolous and, yes, "dirty" (on both sides), spin people are putting on this runoff.

F&$k his party loyalty, what about his loyalty to the people? Or is he only loyal to himself like the rest of 'em.

Wolf in Sheeps Clothing. That is what MacKay is. He is a democrat, therefore we are not eating our own. Indeed, we are protecting our own turf.

If MacKay wanted this to be a fair fight, he should have filed as a democrat and ran as a democrat. We as republicans must protect the values that we have fought for, for so many years.

Democrats should be proud of their ideas and platform as we are. Raymond MacKay is as liberal as Marshall Meadors, but Marshall Meadors was man enough to run on his convictions. We will defeat him in November. Raymond MacKay's defeat will happen Tuesday.

Remember this. This discussion about MacKay being a democrat started 7 days ago. 3 days into the run-off. This has lasted longer than the Richard shirley "racist" remark. Richard wouldn't let it go. MacKay and his campaign have fueled the fire. Blame this on his "bush league" campaign manager. What a waste of money. Inexperience and ignorance has put MacKay behind the 8 ball.

I predict (and I only lost 1 race in the primary <larry greer v. Eddie moore>)that Waldrep will win 54-46%. Turn-out is everything.

The EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA newspaper will hurt even more.

of course you can post this :)

For the record, and not trying to be cute, but I am a progressive (read, old-school republican) who thinks that the county council, no matter whose represented "progress" over the years, has been very, very disappointing over the last decade. Joey's early stature gave them fig leaves. When he was diminished, it only served to reveal just how pathetic the leadership of this county was.

. . . but he REALLY CAN'T stay awake in council meetings. JD, that is a fact that is verifiable when you look at past tapes of County Council meetings. I'll admit we're all guilty of it from time to time, but there is a fix:

Get something to drink and sip on it constantly during the meeting. It worked for me suriving lecture and study halls, why not for a County Council member?

Granted . . . my "sip" ran the gambit between 1L of Mt. Dew and 2-3 Jolt Colas.

Anyhow . . . where did I put those chocolate-covered espresso beans . . .

Nick: Pathetic leadership? That is of course IN YOUR OPINION ! I'd be interested to know if you think the newly elected folks will make things better or worse. Bob Waldrep certainly hasn't made things better. My take is that in the mannner the new folks campaigned; lies, inuendo, mockery, hateful speak, discourtesy to others, on and on they lack the character to lead forward. Is that the 'new" leadership you hoped for ? Bob Waldrep is still up to those same tactics as evidenced in his recent campaign mailings. You are so quick to use "pathetic." Have you ever tried leading as oppossed to deriding? Go back through your many columns and be objective. How many have been positive. I suspect few were. By that standard, where's your leadership? It seems to me that you are more prone to condemn than to praise. In your position (influencial) you should be better than that, or at least more balanced. Note: no curse words in this post and you'll find none in any post I've made. However, taking on the Cocklebur may be blasphemous.

JD:
If it's true, is it dirty politics. Those attending CC meetings observed 'ole Bob in the flesh. He is what he is.

As Dizzy Dean once said "It ain't brag'n if you can do it."

I don't agree with Nick on a lot of things, but the assessment of our county leadership being pathetic is dead on the money.

Repub: I didn't hope for this kind of change, actually. I did hope for a break in that deadlock I talked about in a column a couple of weeks ago. I take your admonition about showing leadership and being positive. My unwritten rule is that for every critical column, there must at least be some positive suggestion, and frankly I think I've made good on that personal pledge. Besides, I had no plans to write anthing more about cindy, joey or the antics of the council had it not been for the primaries.

MacKay is not for positive change. He is another Preston Puppet. He is Preston's last hope to save his job, if he can't sway Dunn or Allen into his corner.

Now Freddie, you know that the term "Preston Puppet" is a hate word. It is derogatory to Mr. Preston and it is derogatory to Mr. MacKay. Some people on this blog can't express their political opinions without charging their words with derogatory and slanderous labels towards people. It's kind of like people who cuss all the time because they lack confidence in their persuasive communication skills and they think the power of the profane word enhances their message. Think through what you are trying to communicate and say it without putting somebody down.

Yea Freddie. Instead of calling Mac a hateful and derogatory terms like Preston puppet, you could call him one controlled by a “totalitarian tax and spendthrift gone wild”. Geez you guys, this tax burden is too heavy to be nice and cordial, we got to take back the government that belongs to us, you know the people!
