Poll: What should we do offshore?

I don't get all the talk about drilling for oil offshore. The oil companies are only drilling 17% of the offshore oil that they have the rights to. Why do they want more?

It takes many years to build an oil well offshore and get it operating at a good level. Drilling offshore will take years to make any difference on the price of oil. Even then, is it worth it?

We placed a ban on more offshore drilling for a reason - it's dangerous to the environment. Almost as deadly as our addiction to oil, particularly foreign oil.

We need to kick the habit. Instead of spending billions building more oil rigs, let's build wind farms offshore. It can't be any more expensive or time consuming and then we'd be getting rid of fossil fuels and the influence of the mullahs, sheiks, and OPEC.

IT'S A DESERT, IT'S COVERED IN SAND, THE ONLY STUFF DOWN THERE IS THE JUNK WE PUT DOWN THERE, THERE ISN'T ANYTHING THERE TO PROTECT!!!!!!

This isn't just about the environment. That's only one component.

I'm just pointing out that the whole offshore drilling topic is just a GOP talking point for the election.

Newt is trying his best to save the GOP from slaughter this year. He means well, but thank goodness America is going to save us from a 3rd Bush term and hopefully pickup about 30 more Democrat seats in the House and 3 or 4 more Democratic Senators.

That means we'll have a ridiculous majority in the House and the Senate will be close enough that we'll be fine with the help of Lindsay, Hagel, Specter, and others.

That's what's called a "push poll." Drill for more "filthy" oil? Come on now, Andrew.

Cut out the red tape from congress and they'll have wells up and pumping in 18 months.

Sorry, you can get killed by a drunk in your little plastic electric powered car that does 0-60 in month if you want to. I'll keep my 6000lb full frame big block V8 that does 140mph.

Here is an electric that does 0-60 in 3.07 seconds.

The new Tesla Roadster also does 0-60 in 4 seconds...

Do you have any accurate opinions about electric cars?

$109000....
Cute, but sorry can't afford one with my wife getting her PhD. I wouldn't buy it if I could right now anyway, its a deathtrap. Even with these high fuel prices my 6000lb gas drinker is cheaper to buy and operate over its lifespan....Even with economies of scale, you would be looking a around 50K to 65K for one. For me a car just safe reliable transportation. I don't need a $110K car like some guys do to make up for physical shortcomings....

Like I said before, renewable energy is great, but there aren't any viable options in the mean time, so until then, DRILL DRILL DRILL....

We have electric cars already, we just need to start mass producing.

Clearly, if we have the means at hand to decrease our dependence on foreign oil, we should pursue it. but we should also remember that big oil, and big business in general, will blow smoke up your ass all day about how environmentally sensitive they are, and how the durned ol gummint gets in their way. But double hulled tankers were a concept for decades before the Exxon Valdez changed Alaska's ecology and economy forever.Did Exxon, which has yet to pay the fines levied for their negligence, BTW, ever build double hulls on their own? Nah.
Big business seldom does the right thing if it is the expensive thing. so please forgive an old tree hugger who thinks it's also important to have a place to live and clean air and water if he gets just a little nervous when the big oil companies start screaming national security and less regulation at the same time. surely we can find some middle ground where we can address our needs forenergy without ignoring our needs for, oh say, the fisheries off the NC coast, or in the Gulf? You know, greatest nation on earth? nothing we can't do if we put our minds to it? All that stuff? It may be time to put up or shut up.

 Andrew,

I resent the remark that persons over 60 aren't concerned about the state of government's control (or loss of it) of the oil production, price etc.  We finally woke you under 30's up to what is going on and now you turn on the only ally you have.  The "boomers' are all about themselves and the money they will have, or not.  Most people in their 40's and 50's are just struggling to raise their families and get the next generation raised and educated so they can contribute to society.  The poor haven't got a chance and don't exercise their right to vote.  Let me know when you get the GOTV up and running so I can recruit the over 60's to save the day.

Did you miss me?Laughing

I want to say I am 100% for the electric transportation as I have stated in other threads on this forum.

But, Andrew is not old enough to have waited in line to get his 5 gal. Of gas, even if there was any after hours of waiting. Wondering if there would be a station in the area that would not run out before you got yours. I don’t want see those days again, for my kids/grandkids or me.
Andrew we will always have a dependence on oil, That dependence can be lessened. We just need to produce it for ourselves.

We can protect the environment to the point we disappear from it.

More to come on this subject.

hc,

I believe the majority of the baby boomers are not yet 60 years of age.  I could be wrong. Welcome to the blog, forum, whatever. Undecided

Here's a twist on this idea:

Permit offshore drilling along the US coast line so long as all oil obtained from said drilling operations is restricted to domestic use ONLY.

Andrew - I'll vote for the windmills too, so long as your part them off the coast of Cape Cod. Tick the Kennedys off and all . . . LOL.
