Lee...

leadership involves taking a stand...

yes or no..

Does anyone doubt that Bryants conservative beliefs would preclude him from voting for such a bill?...

of course not..i imagine that we ALL believe that he wouldnt and couldnt support it.. and you know what?..its no big deal. He is what he is....

So why are you comfortable with this namby-pamby wishy washy recusal?

thats NOT leadership..

but now it does open the door to question every bill he ever DID vote for that had some miniscule financial gain for himself, now doesnt it?

I bet Marshall Meadors is already going back through 4 years of votes .....

Damn, I bumped myself off the top ten when I bumped the Blog Lunch.

I did want to give the Senator's surrogate, Lee, an opportunity to reply.

Appears the good Senator is too busy.

- PAPPY

Sorry ya'll. I have been quite busy, check out www.kevinbryant.com Gotta go! ttfn

- kevin bryant

C'mon Senator, don't evade the question.

Are you saying you haven't had time in the last 56 hours to answer a constituent's question ?

By the way, Sir, ttfn back atcha, whatever it means.

- PAPPY

yes too busy for now, but you may find some info on my website put "cigarette" in the search box and you'll see several posts on this tax.

- kevin bryant

Evasion, evasion, evasion !!

Nowhere in your website do you answer my questions.

A tax cut doesn't give anybody more money, .

- Lee Cole

Duh...ask anyone that has ever received a reduction in their tax rate if they didn't get more money in their pocket.

Who knows, PAPPY? Perhaps for the same reason a bank robber can't give the money to the Shriners' Hospital and then claim he didn't break the law against bank robbery because he gave the loot to charity?

A conflict of interest is a conflict of interest, PAPPY. Once you're guilty of one, it really doesn't matter WHAT you did with the money. Forget Robin Hood. He was a thief, or at the very least a Democrat who was more HONEST about his wealth redistribution scheme than the ones we have in Congress right now.

- JDTippett

C'mon my friend, you still have avoided explaining what specifically is the conflict between this bill and the good Senator's interest.

That is the question.

If all politicians followed that rule then we'd never get lower taxes because everyone would have to recuse theirselves, .

- Lee Cole

I don't think so.

When it is only for millionaires you would be right if everyone in the legislature fell into that range.

Pappy- I think TTFN means Ta Ta For Now. It's what Tigger always says in the Winnie the Pooh series.

Hmmm, Senator Tigger ?

Hee hee hee! Enlightenment- I'm always seeking it, and sometimes I get to share it. I think Dr. Meadors is going to give Mr. Bryant a run for his money.

Phillip Morris and/or Reynolds American have recently donated to the campaigns of the following State Senators:

John Land (D-Clarendon)
Brad Hutto (D-Orangeburg)
Catherine Ceips (R-Beaufort)
Jake Knotts (R-Lexington)
Larry Martin (R-Pickens)
Billy O'Dell (R-Anderson)

All of these Senators voted FOR the ciggarette tax increase at 2nd Reading (the last recorded voted I could find).

So, Lee, you do understand why the good Senator's recuse betrays his independence.

According to you, these Senators also received contributions from the tobacco indusry yet remained independent enough that when it came to voting they voted their conscience and not the way these contributors would have preferred.

Surely your kidding Pappy, if the man didn't have the nerve to stand up for what he believes in on the senate floor do you really think he's going to come here and say anything more than the conflict of interest line he's been tossing out?
I can assure you Dr Meadors would have voted for this bill. And I could be wrong but I would think a physcian would have even more of a conflict of interest than a pharmacist.

- blogger

then Dr. Meadors would be violating ethics laws. Wow. Breaking the law. Is that ok with you blogger? Do you support a law breaker?

I take it that you are not a suporter of the Senator. That's fine. I am sure whatever he says will not change your mind. I am surprised he even looks at this blog. It trashes him and every other conservative at every opportunity.

Senator Bryant will get 60%+ over Meadors in November. Meadors is a joke. You Democrats could have done better.

awesome!

Even more mature. . .

Lee is rather silent as well...

posting what OTHER politicians did hardly makes The Senator look better..

it actually made him look worse..and does nothing to help us understand just what Lee finds so noble and outstanding about being wishy washy and (apparently) unable to make his mind up

Let's see, The Good Senator, Lee Cole and willie h are yet to respond.

How about it...defend your comments.

I posted what the others did to show that all kinds of corporations including tobacco companies donate money to candidates with varying ideologies.

I agree that elected officials have a duty to vote "yes" or "no" except when they have a conflict of interest. Sen. Bryant said he had a conflict of interest, so he recused himself and his reasoning seems perfectly legitimate to me.

Of course some of you are not interested in answers whether they come from Sen. Bryant or others because you're trying to make a political point. That's fine, I understand you want a fellow liberal in the State Senate. We'll see how that turns out in November.

PAPPY, Lee Cole is right on this one. It seems to me that Sen. Bryant recused himself from that vote because he thought he had a conflict of interest. Whether he did or not isn't the issue.

All elected officials should be so scrupulous when making such decisions. Lord knows, many of them vote on issues they KNOW affect them personally and individually.

PAPPY, I love ya man, but on this issue you're being somewhat like Joey Preston's detractors. You don't seem to want the answer. You just want to use the question as a bludgeon.

If I were Kevin Bryant, I wouldn't try to answer you either. Nothing he could say short of, "You know, PAPPY, you're right" would satisfy you, and if he said that, he'd be either lying to you or pandering to you.

Now JD I think your being a little unfair to Pappy. Personally I think the Senator came on here, attempted to answer and even though I don't like his answer and think he could have done a better job in addressing the issue that it is a dead horse now and am willing to drop it.
Our Pappy on the other hand is doing what he does best. He asked a question and he wasn't satisfied with the answer so he is asking again. We have seen him do this for years on the water issue, and we or at least I know I do admire him for his tenacity on that issue and I think you do too JD. So while I realize you don't agree with him on the issue at hand, you must admit he is using the same methods he has always used and we have grown to love. Now I realize you have a little bee in your bonnet here lately where I am concerned but Pappy is just being Pappy, ignore the thread and let him carry on if he wants no harm done.
