The Republicans who run the county council here in Anderson seem to baffle the logical mind. First, they vote to raise taxes, and seem almost proud that they did. They run up credit cards for "economic development" and than brag about a call center being brought to Anderson, something offshore micronations and the likes of India tout as real accomplishments. Is this what being a conservative Republican in Anderson County has come to? Supporting bigger and more expensive government? Being proud of taking us down the third world road to economic development? The battle of the personality cliques has so clouded the minds of the so called Republicans on county council that they don't act as Republicans at all.
Sorry, but I believe in limited government, tax relief, and real economic development. I believe in government that gets results at the lowest cost possible for the people. We don't have that here, no matter what party label the majority of council assigns to themselves.

raise taxes, run up credit cards, and tout third world industries coming here
come election day send them packing!

Look the self appointed political guru/know-it-all is back making the same great fodder and laughable comments as, um, Brian McCarty who talks to himself on his blog.
Brian, go back to Honea Path and Greenwood and revel in the successes there as you said should be done. Then when you get tired of almost zero growth while celebrating the opening of a Duncan Doughnuts come back to Anderson and look at the 20 to 1 return on the dollar invested in economic development. Then note that unemployment in Anderson County went from 7.5 % in 2005 to 5.7% in 2008. (Sounds like Brian McCarty's estimation of failure to me).

Brian, Brian, Brian . . .
I don't believe Anderson County is in a position to be PICKY over jobs or job creation at this point. ANY jobs that can be brought to the area should be welcomed with open arms, ESPECIALLY noting the current national and global economic climate.
Folks . . . think VERY carefully now . . .
There are those in this county who scoff at economic development - believe that unless it's a manufacturing job, specifically textile manufacturing, it's not a real job.
Give me a break.
This week, we receive the news that 350 new jobs are coming to Anderson County, specifically to a formerly empty retail store located on SC81. In doing so, the critics were *thought* to have been silenced as two of the major issues that we hear harped upon were addressed. Specifically:
Q.) Can you ever bring more than 5-10 jobs to Anderson at a time?
A.) Yes we can and yes we have - 350 to be exact.
Q.) Can you do something about all of these vacant buildings around town?
A.) Yes we can and yes we have - Big Box Retailer Credit to the rescue here.
Yet, after these efforts, you're greeted with, from the likes of Stanley Welch and Charles R. Driver, dispariaging remarks like "It's a boiler-room operation" and "where are the real jobs."
Hmmm ... it would seem to me that one group has consistantly done something to improve the economy of this town, while the other group is content to sit back, do nothing (aside from gripe), and be a general nuisance to the progress of this county.
One last question for everyone to ponder . . .
I personally believe Stanley Welch/Charles R. Driver provide nothing more than lip service when it comes to new jobs and growth. Ask the hard questions. Put THEM on the spot. Ask them these questions and see what sort of suprising answers you will get:
1.) Where would you like to see Anderson County in the next 50 years?
2.) How do you propose to execute your vision for Anderson County, based on where you believe the County will be in the next 50 years?
3.) Do you REALLY want growth and prosperity for EVERYONE in Anderson County?
4.) How do you intend to ensure that, at the minimum, opportunity for growth and prosperity for EVERYONE is available?
Think about it . . .

PS - Brian - quit your posturing and positioning for a political run in 2010. What you are doing is about as obvious as the Goodyear Blimp.

Here's the stupid part, Stanley:
While you and Charles R. Driver might be nice to the caller when they call in, it's the other callers that follow the intelligent caller - you know - making fun of them for being "educated" or "not from here" or "not one of you" or any other attempted defense in light of a truthful correction.
Then there is the pesky reputation of "if the CallerID does not reflect our list of regular callers, we don't answer the phone." I can't tell you how to overcome that reputation, but it is a persistant one in the community.

Ya know Coke, you are right.
It's ashamed that Bill McAbee can order room service in New Orleans, spend big money on dinner for two in Chicago (two nights in a row), go to Detroit, Hilton Head, Atlanta and other exotic places on our dime.
He has spent our money at Hooters and only God knows where else he has been on our tax dollars. But you know what? He will probably be elected.
All this high living (on our tax dollars) and the only Economic development news (and I think the call center is good) is right in the middle of Bob Waldrep's district. How much of our money has Bob spent on "economic development"?
You're right, Coke. We need "Real Economic Development", McAbee hasn't delivered.

Yes Stanley, it is the responsibility of the talk show host to manage the callers calling in.
How stupid can you possibly be?
Simple terms, SSHM, simple terms . . .
Ok - When your radio show is faced with what we call a hard break, as in a forced commercial break or a news break, you, as the host, HAVE to watch the time and move the callers along. In a one-or-two man radio outfit, that onus falls directly on your shoulders, sir. You have to manage the callers.
If the callers are wrong, much like the assertion of one of Charles R. Driver's callers the other morning (FDR was a Founding Father of the United States), you should certainly correct the caller (if the show wants to remain credible as a newsource, that is).
No brainer, right? Hmmm ... it would appear otherwise.
Actually Stanley, I do take issue with Nick and his relative abandonment of this forum. There is no need to migrate this site to another hosting service. There is no reason why you can not migrate this site, in place, to a later version of phpBB (and get all of those "neat" effects that are being touted in the we're moving post).
Specific to how the bloggers act, ask yourself what a little moderation from Nick would have done to your alias, Friedgreenmater. I'd wager that tomato plant would have died/banned a lot sooner.
Lastly Stanley, I don't need a band of tin-foil wearing hat followers to tell me how great I am. I am a self-confident, educated, and driven individual. As I have said before, there are a lot more out there just like me(yes - here in Anderson County). We're ready to lead Anderson in and beyond the 21st Century. What do you intend to do for Anderson, sir?

First, let me say the negative growth in Honea Path is not acceptable, nor it it praised. But, it is in part because the county adminstrator and the other council members are so hellbent to win their teenage contest with Wilson that they ignore her district. Do you think Preston would help finance a economic development trip for Wilson to bring jobs to Honea Path or Williamston?
The other party to blame is Ms. Wilson. She goes too far and does not put her district first. I will give you that. But, that does not excuse Mr. Preston or his council backers in what they are doing. The reward and punish politics of Anderson County, resulting in an ever growing government with diminsihing tangible returns, has held Anderson County back for too long.
It is not only embarrassing, it is damaging to real people's lives, like the elderly couple who trusted a candidate they voted for to not raise their home's taxes or the small town residents who live around what could become Superfund site because the county would not work with their town to do better. It is shameful what the leaders of this county are doing. People deserve better.

Again, Coke you are spot on. If McAbee had not voted for higher taxes and higher solid waste taxes we would all have a few more coins in our pocket.
McAbee campaigned against raising taxes. He LIED. The sad thing is when McAbee lies, people lose their homes! He should be ashamed!
Time for another lesson in politics folks . . .
That's the wrong question to ask, Brian. The correct question would be: Why, in eight years time, in the face of declining economic opportunities in District 7, did our resident political neophyte never once take a trip to aid in economic growth and investment in her district. No one ever stopped her . . . save herself.
Eh?
Think about it: If she is forever crowing about people taking trips in the name of economic development, could she ever take a trip? Nope. Doing so would make her look like a hypocrite.
She painted herself into a corner in her own district. It has cost her district ever since . . .
(hint: one of many reasons why she is called the political neophyte)
Again Brian, you miss the boat. Her pride hurts her district, not "partisan political bickering." There is nothing stopping her from working with the Chamber of Commerce or other pro-growth groups here in Anderson County.
She has had EIGHT YEARS to correct the problems of District 7. She has been the ONLY person to have ever represent District 7 (so no legacy argument will stick here). Why is it that she is the ONLY member of council not to land growth and development, hmmm?
At some point, she has to stop pointing fingers at other people and realize that, *SHOCK*, she's the issue, not everyone else in Anderson County.
People do deserve better Brian. That's why people will vote in droves for Doug Hooper on June 10th. Eight years is a long time to do nothing but point fingers at people and accuse them of being the problem.

It is not only embarrassing, it is damaging to real people's lives, like the elderly couple who trusted a candidate they voted for to not raise their home's taxes or the small town residents who live around what could become Superfund site because the county would not work with their town to do better. It is shameful what the leaders of this county are doing. People deserve better.- coke_stevenson
People do deserve better Brian. That's why people will vote in droves for Doug Hooper on June 10th. Eight years is a long time to do nothing but point fingers at people and accuse them of being the problem.

Time for another lesson in politics folks . . .I almost feel sorryfor Doug Hooper and the ass whipping he will get on June 10. The Republican debate was his chance to make a huge statement in terms of his support. His best shot> eight firefighters in Hooper Tees and their wives! Wow! Gonna be ugly.
Do you think Preston would help finance a economic development trip for Wilson to bring jobs to Honea Path or Williamston?- coke_stevenson
The other party to blame is Ms. Wilson. She goes too far and does not put her district first. I will give you that. But, that does not excuse Mr. Preston or his council backers in what they are doing. The reward and punish politics of Anderson County, resulting in an ever growing government with diminsihing tangible returns, has held Anderson County back for too long.- coke_stevenson
Again Brian, you miss the boat. Her pride hurts her district, not "partisan political bickering." There is nothing stopping her from working with the Chamber of Commerce or other pro-growth groups here in Anderson County.

Time for another lesson in politics folks . . .seventy miles of water line is nothing? How many miles did Larry Greer run? Who's looking for help from the CPST monies to run water lines? He spent all his money building the infamous road to nowhere and sewer lines that the Town of Iva is still fighting to keep from hooking up to because of the cost.

She did enough with her paving funds for leverage that the rest of council changed the rules to stop her. Jeezus, you really are Stupid!
