The 800 MHz that was supported by 5 of our 7 county council members, Waldrop and Wilson opposed, has already shown results.
Cooperation with other counties while conducting search and rescue operations on the lake has been facilitated by 800 MHz.

800 MHz
I am curious as to how many rescues can now be attributed to 800 Mhz. Does anyone know?
I'm amazed to find out there was no cooperation between the counties BEFORE 800mHz. I was involved in a few of those rescues back in the 1970s, and it seems to me that we go along just fine.
(And don't anybody misundertand my intent here. I support the 800mHz system, but let's not elevate it to the status of a "magic bullet" here.)
JD,
I think we can all safely agree the our Fire Fighters, EMS, Sheriff's Department, and First Responders have always worked well together from all over the state of South Carolina. I think the point is that having 800 Mhz is a tool that has enhanced their ability to work together in a more timely and efficient manner.
I am so very glad that Bill McAbee, Larry Greer, Gracie Floyd, Michael Thompson, and Ron Wilson had the courage to vote in Favor of 800 Mhz in the face of false accusations from Cindy Wilson and Bob Waldrep in their effort to stop the 800 Mhz system in Anderson County.

The objections were not against 800 mhz, they were against sourcing without bidding and not looking at alternatives to Motorola.
Interesting article here about Motorola splitting off it's troubled handset division.- hgmoore
Once again. It was bid by the state of South Carolina through the state procurement system. The same system we use to buy cars because the state gets a better price on automobiles than we do.
In my first term on council I listened to Cindy Wilson babble interminably about the county using the state procurement system to buy everything from paperclips to heavy equipment. Now we go and use it...

I understand the concerns about not looking at other alternatives to Motorola. However, when the rest of the state has standardized on Motorola, it just like brining a Mac to a PC shop - not a good idea.
Don't forget: This program originated in 1992 with the State Budget and Control Board and SCANA. In 2001, Motorola purchased the primary ownership and management of the Palmetto 800MHz system.
If you wanted to participate - best to do so with the company that owns and maintains the system. Guaranteed 100% compatibility.
Obligatory source material here.
As for Motorola spinning off it's cell phone division, I tend to look at it much like IBM. Remember, IBM sold off it's entire PC division to Lenovo. IBM, to a lot of people, was know as the PC (ergo - IBM compatible PCs, etc). Was it the end of IBM. No way. Will this be the end of Motorola. No way.
Just for the record ... how many folks know what Motorola does - beyond cell phones?
Hello Moto!
Folks - that listing is just what Motorola offers here in the US! Cell phones are "small fries" compared to their other offerings.

I'd wager she's pro-Red Swingline Stapler, but anti-paper clip.
I believe you have my stapler.

It is not the 800 system it is the way Punk Joey took the bids.
SS,
Motorola did not sell it off, they split it off to another division. Restructuring like this can start support issues, pricing increases, etc etc
I am not taking a position on any side of this system, simply commenting on my take of events. I did not personally see everything, so my take could be less than 100% accurate.

So you can't seperate the message from the messenger, doughboy? One word: Pathetic.
You would think people could look beyond petty issues and look towards something that benefits everyone. This system benefits everyone in Anderson County.

Once again. Bob Waldrop and Cindy Wilson first opposed the 800 MHz because they said it just wouldn't work. This was shown to be totally false. Waldrep and Wilson then claimed that there was a better system. This too was disproved as well. It was only at that point that the two of them fell back on the terms of the contract to try to stop 800 MHz. The only consistency in Waldrop and Wilson's position was a complete opposition to the 800 MHz system.

There you go again, Joey is at fault for everything.
Joey did NOT take the bids, the state procurement system took the bids.
Besides, even if he did, this benefits the entire county. It was a good move and a smart buy. Thanks to Bill McAbee, Lary Greer, Ron Wilson, Michael Thompson, and Gracie Floyd.
I dont remember them saying they did not want the system Mr Mcabee refresh my memory.
Mr Mcabee are you in the trucking business,if so are you going to strike April 1?

Our minutes are on-line and verbatim. You can review the debate, and see that at no time did Bob Waldrep or Cindy Wilson ever express support for 800 MHz. They first claimed, at the October 16 and November 6, 2007 meetings that the system wouldn't work. This was shown to be a completely untrue. Then they claimed that there was a better system. When this was shown to be equally false they then went to the terms of the contract. At no time did they ever support 800 MHz.

Mr Mcabee it seems to me that the main concern was the administrator being involved with the contracts .If you have an employee that you dont trust what do you do with him?

Dane 4 boys,
You obviously didn't read the minutes as I did. Waldrop and Wilson never raised any objection to the contract until just before the third reading vote. They tried every other reason to kill 800 MHz at the first two meetings and never voiced any support for the system.
Leeonmypole, I read them but I think it has a lot to do with the manner in which it was presented ,my opinion.
