Homeland Park
Not dure where Homeland Park is, if someone says it's on the northside, it won't mean a thing to mean I would need landmarks to find it and street names. Anyway there is a section of Philadelphia called soicitey hill that in the early 80's was a disgrace trash, drug addicts, drunks, garbage a great big dump. Today that area's homes are in the phone number brackets, because the people that were moving in cared and then developers came in and finished the job. So zn I wouldn't give up on HP just yet.

HP is quiet large in sq miles but the general area is the Shockley Ferry area around White Jones Hardware and WRIX radio station. 2 or 3 miles any direction from there.

I'm probally running around the bases after the game ( dah) but call WRIX before 10 AM tomorrow and you can do a public service anouncement on there for free! They are good about that.
Good luck

Morning bloggers!
I want to add to this thread some additional information which may have been omitted previously.
While I don't want to make this a commercial of sorts, I guess it is what it is. I beg your indulgence for a moment.
On April 19th, from 9:00 am till about 3:00 pm we will again have a neighborhood clean-up drive.- wyatt1sc
While your at it, go a bit north and burn down all of Fall and Spencer streets......The sheriff's department would love you....
Pardon please A slight detour of the thread...
but didnt Homeland Park used to be a part of the city of anderson...but actually voted to "de-annex"?
I have heard that..but wonder if someone might actually know that to be true..(or false)

Since the women's group meeting is being bumped, I figured it was only fair to bring HP event back too. Sorry, but I think Wyatt has taken a bit more abuse than Jenny, but he's also not politically correct--is he? As I'm not either, I'll take my money and time to HP.
Confused
I believe the date is the 19th and I too will help bump the cleanup as it gets a little closer.
I believe in what the Wyatt Family and Homeland Park residence are doing.
If I was able to assist I would be there, it is a worthy cause.

Perhaps you can assist. I don't know you so I can't tell what your abilities are, but at other clean-ups there are trash picker-uppers, pick-up drivers, bag passer-outers, and even pizza go-getters. There are reportcard filler-outers, news story caller-inners, photo takers, and water passer-outers.
And there are just plain folks who ask how they can help, even if they can't lift the assorted junk into the truck. Ask yourself, "How can I help?" And then ask the other folks, "How can I help?" You will have a good time, feel good about yourself, and most of all, you will make a difference in Homeland Park and in Anderson County. I will be there too.
See ya in Homeland Park !

First let me say Thank You to all of you who have spoken kind words about the HP Pride Day event. This event is scheduled for April 19th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. I am really praying that we have a large turnout. I wanted to let you know exactly what we will be doing. Of course there will be street cleanups,Along with inflatable toys for the kids, and several other things for kids to do. We will also have large dumpsters on site for people to bring any kind of trash, even large items (except dead bodies) The sherrifs dept.will be there to do the safe kid fingerprint kits, along with the animal shelter, DeHEC & Enviromental Enforcement,Fire & Ems and several other groups. I want this not only to be a good time for all,but also want residents to be able to obtain much needed info. The Homeland Park Volunteer Fire Dept. is making the hot dog plates for all volunteers. They will also be selling hotdog plates for $5.00 to all non-volunteers.All the money raised will go to the fire dept for the purchase of their much needed new truck. HP Fire dept is unlike any I have ever seen, they do so much for this community. I will also be doing door prizes.
Now on to one thing I am stumped on.. Does anyone know a clown? (No, I dont mean the Wyatt family) I have heard about a few,but am unable to locate them. I did speak with one,but the problem is she wants $85.00hr.Thats a little to steep for us right now.If you do please e-mail me with the info. Also I am proud to announce that we have our own website, it is still under construction when it up and running I will send the link. Once again thanks for your support..

To slightly expand on Angel's thread here, the HPTF is as grass-roots as one can get. We have a champagne vision with a bottled-water budget.
We aren't well-funded, we aren't well-staffed, we have no offices or even dedicated phone lines, and we aren't well liked by the drug dealers and riff-raff we are chasing away from here. Actually, by judging from some posters, we aren't well-appreciated either, but that is immatereal.
It's all about making a difference. From day one, we were told this would be a hard row to hoe, and that statement has come to pass as true. There has not been an actual support mechanism in this area involving the community. It's always been about "call the Sheriff" to resolve the issues. Well folks, the Sheriff NEEDS the support of their community to make the job easier and provide eyes on the ground about WHAT/WHOM to be looking for. Every neighborhood needs exactly what we are attempting to provide: a community-based oversight & control of it's own area. The HPTF needs the involvement of those living here to make those changes, and to put Homeland Park on the map as something besides a cesspool & den of inequities. What we don't need is the naysayers who constantly put down efforts of those who actually "DO" instead of say they do.
The Pride Day event is our first MAJOR event. We've staged two other clean-ups last year, and some minor ones in our local area. But this one is for EVERYONE to participate in. ANGEL has determined it is important to have things for the kiddies ( and she's getting some jumpers & slides), for food & drinks, we're working to provide live music, and exposure to available support systems in place from County & State. It's not just about dumping off trash, but to get the community together.
The Homeland Park Volunteer Fire Dept. has been there for us from the start, so we are also doing fund raising for their purchase of a needed new truck for the department. In case nobody knew, the HPVFD is providing support for fire efforts to the City now, so an additional truck is sorely needed.
Trying not to harp on this thing, but REALLY folks, we need the support of those surrounding the area of HP to take part, even if only for a short time. Learn your neighborhood and issues. Take a few moments to chat with us or those who will be there. We are anticipating members from County Council to attend if their schedules can be worked out. Can you envision Cindy Wilson and Joey Preston battling over who picked up the most litter???
We look forward to this event and the turnout of the community. Maybe we'll see you there!

I want to take part but have the most important meeting of my organizatiuon for the year. I should be finished before 1:30PM and if you send me a map I will be there even if it is only for the last hour. I have a general idea of where you are. You can begin on South Main or Murray.
Petunia dahlin'
Drive down South Main towards White Jones/Pruette shopping center. Once you reach the Shockley Ferry/South Main intersection, continue straight across the road. You'll come to the Bi-Lo on the left ( next traffic light), make a right and then a QUICK left on Main street ( there's a CVS and Wallgreens, if you pass them U went too far)
Come on down about 3/4 mile and you can't miss the fire dept on the left ( a water tower is sharing their shadow).
The more the merrier. Look forward to seeing ya there next Saturday morning ( dress comfortably, it's gonna be 80* and sunny)

Don't know yet if I'll be up from Abbeville. Wyatt or Angel, send me an E Mail with particulars of the event, and a mailing address. I'll try to make sure this gets aired by Rick Driver, and if I can't get there I'll donate $20.00 to help buy refreshments.
Ed,
If you can make it thats terrific!
Donations are going right to the fire department's effort to buy new(used) truck, and to offset costs for food. The HPFD need our support first ( there's always a need for fire equipment for our volunteers).
From initial buzz, we are expecting a great turnout on volunteers! We have the outstanding support from several county organizations already.
I hope it comes to pass and folks show up to participate..
We want to thank , IN ADVANCE, all those who've contributed time, matereals and support this effort to make strides in this community. A list will be forthcoming on individuals and groups which are making a difference.

Homeland Park Pride Day
ANDERSON – Residents of Homeland Park, in conjunction with Anderson County Environmental Enforcement officers, have started cleaning up their neighborhoods. Residents of Homeland Park began cleaning up their neighborhoods by creating the Homeland Park Community Task Force, which is taking charge in beautifying and cleaning neighborhood streets.
This year’s event named the Homeland Park Pride Day will be conducted Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will center around the Homeland Park Fire Department which will serve as the dispatch point for sending out volunteer cleanup teams to the surrounding streets. The Homeland Park Fire Department will also be serving volunteers lunch as well as selling baked goods to raise money for new equipment.
Homeland Park Community Task Force President Doreen Montepara and her family created the civic organization in February 2007. The Homeland Park Community Task Force conducted their first cleanup on Sunday, July 14, 2007 along South Main Street Extension. Last year’s participants collected 36 bags of trash just on that one road. Even more is expected this year throughout Homeland Park.
“Homeland Park has a lot to be proud of and residents are very excited about showcasing what we have to offer,” Ms. Montepara said.
Several divisions of the Anderson County government helped in that cleanup effort and plan to participate again this year. The Transportation Division and Environmental Services Division will provide some crews and equipment to ease the cleanup. Keep America Beautiful of Anderson County helped make the litter cleanup more convenient by providing each participant with an orange safety vest, a gripper tool and trash bags to collect the litter.
Environmental Enforcement officers and community leaders have begun surveying the amount of litter on various streets and advising residents of their needs to clean their individual properties to avoid fines or court.
“Community involvement is important to the reduction of litter through education and programs, such as Keep America Beautiful, Adopt-A-Spot and Adopt-A-Highway”, Captain Keith Bowman stated.
Henry G. Cisneros, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, described his "Broken Window" theory- that if one window is left broken, showing that no-one cares, soon all windows will be broken, trash will pile up, and problems will mount. Homeland Park residents are using this theory to fight the war on litter in their neighborhoods.
Anderson County Environmental Enforcement officers Captain Keith Bowman, Investigator Janet Brock and Sergeant Sandy Hayes helped the community in picking up trash and investigating the source of the litter. Most of the trash originated from motorists and pedestrians tossing wrappers, cigarettes and cans onto the ground. Unfortunately, some of the trash also came from routine litter violators.
Ms. Montepara and residents of the community meet the second Thursday of every month at the Homeland Park Fire Department to discuss strategies to clean up Homeland Park. Turnouts for the meetings usually range from 12 to 30 concerned residents and all Homeland Park Community residents are invited to participate.
Most likely our turnout will be dismal and next meeting all we'll hear is" well there was no notice in the paper...."
There are lots of other events slated for other groups this weekend (at least two biker Poker-runs, Relay for Life, scout deals, two baseball games) so competition for volunteers & participants will be fierce.
We can only hope the buzz and "bumps" will keep this in everyone's thoughts.
Again gang, thanks for your help and support!
