Post your question(s) for any of the candidates below. The Cocklebur plans to email a selected set of questions to the candidates. The questions also may be eligible for use in the May 18 candidate forum organized by the Anderson Independent-Mail and WRIX-FM.

Nick,
I want to ask all Anderson County Council Candidates the following questions:

1. How can you raise the level of cooperation between the Council and the Administration to the next level, so both can work as a team to improve our community?
2. Do you support the 1 cent sales tax increase to upgrade our roads and bridges?
3. Do you believe that legal consultations between attorneys and the Administration should remain private?
4. Do you believe in open prayers in Council meetings?
5. Do you support an increase in millage to improve the county’s services?
6. Do you believe in county’s financial support of nonprofit organizations that work with county’s departments? Examples: the Sheriff’s Office, the Solicitors’ Office.
7. Do you believe in the expansion of “Adult Entertainment” business in our community?
8. What would you do to curb gang activities in our community?
9. Do you approve of the use of “lobbyists” to negotiate with State and Federal entities on our behalf?
10. How can we tell “the story” of our County to our community and other communities more affectively?
11. Do we need to improve zoning and rezoning guidelines and how?
12. How can we balance our need for economic and residential developments with the rights and wishes of neighborhoods and communities?

In addition to the list of questions I submitted earlier for the Anderson County Council Candidates, I also need to know the following biographical information:

• What district they live in and for how long. Also, How long have they lived in Anderson County.
• Educational background.
• Work experience.
• Political experience.
• Affiliations with civic groups, nonprofit organizations, and religious institutions.
• Family status.
• How to contact him/her

In response to overwhelming demend, as well as my own self interest, I think this newly reheated issue of dual water rates should be raised, Nick.
I would particularly like to know when we might expect the County attorney's opinion (i.e. brfore or after election day ).

Quite a bit of criticism of the council members involves their election last time of Democrat Gracie Floyd as the chairperson.

I would like to know why she was elected? I feel sure there was a reason. I realize that Mr. Greer could not succeed himself. Were the others not willing to serve as chairman? Was it considered a non-partisan issue? This is a serious matter to some, so I would like to know the reasons why. I feel there may be a logical reason which would be useful to share.

Allow me more specific water rate questions for Michael Thompson:
1.Are you aware that all water districts involved in the purchase of the Duke water system signed an ironclad agreement to respect each other’s boundaries, which would seem to negate your effort to rewrite such boundaries ?
2. Since you are personally affected by the City’s dual rates, why did you not pursue the rewriting of water district boundaries earlier than now ?

I'd consider it a non-partisan issue. Being the chairperson is simply ceremonial.

Also, this question is to all of the candidates that are calling Gracie Floyd a liberal: How do you explain the nearly constant 6-1 or 7-0 votes in which Ms. Floyd is joined by 5-6 Republicans everytime?

Clearly, Gracie Floyd is a radical liberal elite? LOL.. I bet those wackos at the Republican stump yesterday can't name one thing that Gracie Floyd has voted for or against that classifies her as such.

I have some questions for Ms. Floyd, Mr. Thompson, Ms. Wilson, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Waldrep, Mr. Greer and Mr. McAbee.

I do realize the need for an animal ordinance, however, why do you feel it necessary to restrict sale of animals at the Jockey lot. If there is a problem out there, why is it so hard to enforce the laws on their premises. Anderson County enforces the law at the mall and other shopping centers. Why not the Jockey Lot, too. Are the citizens that shop the Jockey Lot any less deserving of law enforcement? Having shopped there myself, I happen to find it hard to believe that there is a major problem. These merchants appear to be law-abiding citizens selling their goods. There is no reason to assume otherwise. One bad apple does not mean you cannot use the bag. Toss the one and enjoy the apple pie.

It seems to me we should be asking our Sheriff and Animal enforcement where they are when all these complaints are coming in. Perhaps if we could find the funding that the sheriff needs, the perceived problem at the jockey lot would solve itself without trying to restrict people from selling their goods, animal included, in our local free market.

If animal enforcement doesn't work weekends, I say why not? The rest of us do. We should not be restricting the sale of legal goods in any market for any reason. Can we not find a way to change the law? and just the law? This, in my opinion, borders on illegal restraint of trade.

Just because there may or may not be a problem in a particular shopping district does not mean we should move in and tell these people they are no longer allowed to sell their product. What if we went down Shockley Ferry Road and said to the citizens there “selling goods here is illegal because there are some folks here that use bad judgment when selling their product”? No, that is not going to happen. The sheriff goes to those locations and stops the problems. Don't you think we should treat the shoppers and merchants at the Jockey Lot with the same respect?

On the front page of AIM this morning there is an article about Clemson and flooding issues. On the second page of the article Anderson City Manager John Moore stated that these issues are going to have to be discussed here in Anderson. There are many problems with storm run off causing flooding from new construction and more paving over of "greenspace" in all areas of the city. Mr Moore stated in the article that it could cost Anderson $300,000 to comply with minimum storm water regulations.

My questions to the candidates are: What is going to be done about this? Are they in favor of imposing a storm water fee to fund the mandates? Would this fee be impose on all city tax payers? Would new constuction sites be charged a fee at the completion of the construction and evaluation of run off produced?

I was proud of a young lady who presented her views very eloquently during the public hearing on the amendment to the animal ordinance. Her voice was heard, and I understand the amendment is being presently revised to reflect her concerns.

With the apparent lack of financial transparency in Anderson County Goverment, the lack of a full audit of Anderson County finances, and the apparent lack of financial control as demonstrated the more than $2 million dollar deficit in the Sheriff's Department, has the time come for the Governor to suspend the authority of the Anderson County government and bring in state personnel for the purpose of bringing county finances into order?

IA..what a great idea. The state definitely should step in and manage Anderson Countys finances since they do such a GREAT job themselves. Heck...they stay on the brink of financial disaster most of the time themsleves. I'll keep an eye out for the govn'r to roll into town any day.

Rick Adkins, chairman of the Anderson County Republican Party, said he could easily see the group taking a County Council seat in two years. Any large group, whether it’s a political organization or a major employer, can quickly become a major player in local politics because so few people vote, Mr. Adkins said.

For example, in a primary election where only 15 percent of the population votes, that’s only 3,000 people voting per seat.

“If they move 1,400 people to Anderson County, they would be a very big force in the elections, and they could take over a party very easily,” Mr. Adkins said.
